- The two 2024 candidates for Multnomah County District Attorney meet for a debate Thursday evening from 6:30-7:30 p.m., hosted by KGW and The Oregonian. Incumbent DA Mike Schmidt and challenger Senior Deputy DA Nathan Vasquez will each be answering questions from our moderators, in addition to some video questions submitted by KGW viewers.
Elected in 2020 on a progressive platform, Schmidt has helmed the DA's office over a particularly challenging four years marked by rampant homelessness and drug use in Portland, alongside a major spike in homicides. Critics have blamed Schmidt for many of those problems, something he refutes. Vasquez, on the other hand, has been a career prosecutor in the DA's office for decades - but this marks his first foray into a political campaign, meaning he lacks a comparable record as an elected official.

Portland can't handle another term with Mike Schmidt. He has brought this city to its knees. We need someone who knows the law and how to equally apply it without prejudice.
He's RC Antifa with a jacket and tie.
Hi Portland. Letting people perpetuate low level violence over and over is not fair to kids, women and the elderly. Get a DA to prosecute crime and quit the money launder that is the homeless industrial complex.
Never forget the 19 year old who shot and murdered his girlfriend on PSU campus, and was sentenced to a mere to 23 years. Mike is spineless and soft on crime. Say NO to mike Schmidt.
We need a change, Mike is no good and he has shown that.
great debate here of our hotly contested Multnomah DA position.......as a criminal defense atty in Portland for 35 years I know both candidates fairly well....the last 4 years have not gone well for crime in Multnomah County, including apathy amongst police officers and low level crimes being seemingly ignored, while I have sparred and tangled in trials with him, I'm voting Nathan Vasquez, DA
Vote Mike Schmidt OUT!!!!! He has been awful for Portland!!!!!!!!

Wow! Color me shocked! the 1st AD IC when i open this video, is a positive AD for Maxine. What's the deal here, are they just airing the Ads from those who paid the most for them? Maybe that also explains why the ONLY Ads IC for Jayapal, are super negative, & because someone has even been paying MORE $$ to run those Ads than any favorable ADs she has paid for or tried, to pay for?? Who's says that $$ can't buy Political outcomes?
I'm truly not excited for either candidate- I don't think Schmitt has been an effective DA or leader, and I'm extremely worried for PDX with these guys as our options. I'll give Schmidt credit for not being afraid to try (and sometimes fail) in the interest of finding a better, more compassionate way of trying cases. When I listen to Vasquez's responses I see a status-quo conservative approach to the courts where the justice is afforded to the privileged, and not to people who have nothing. He's cocky and his primary talking points are 'fuck Mike Schmidt', which isn't very compelling to me. Schmidt has become the city's favorite scapegoat for everything wrong with Portland. I can respect that Schmidt has not compromised on his values... As for Vasquez, I have no idea what his values are and that's of greater concern to me.
At the end of the day, I think Schmidt got into office green and at an extremely challenging time. I'm in the central city 4 days a week; it's rough out there, but I have noticed improvements. I really hope he can learn from his mistakes and improve the city if given another chance. Maybe I'll eat those words. I think if Vasquez wins, then things may go back to 'normal'... 'normal' being no police oversight and the homeless just swept under the rug and into prisons where we don't see them (but definitely pay for them).
Both options are risky.
"When I listen to Vasquez's responses I see a status-quo conservative approach to the courts where the justice is afforded to the privileged, and not to people who have nothing." - You mean carjackers of color, rioters on drugs, etc.? Brilliant play for public safety, always playing the race/poverty card, masking what thugs are really about. Always pretending rehabilitation can be endless. Never admitting that crime is sleazy and violent.
Down with Mike the clown....👎🏾
I was really impressed with Vasquez until he demeaned President Trump. It really disappointed me as I cant imagine an anti Trump DA being honest and protective towards our citizens.
Both are terrible but its Portland. Pick the best out of the two and its not Schmidt.
