A steel (metal) ruler! I just bought one from a local hardware store and it's just a great cutting guide and measurement tool. An upgrade from that would be a carpenter's square (or whatever you call them in English).
PS. This is the first time I'm commenting on one of your video's. I've been watching for a while now, although mostly watching older video's. I have to say I really like your video's, even though I'm more into tooling, I still really enjoy watching. You're really good at vlogging and editing which makes watching so much more fun but I really appreciate how you show how you can make a business in leathercraft. I myself got interested in leathercraft a few years ago already, but have been very slow with it. I'm still a student and I lack the time and mostly the budget. Because even though beginner tools are not the most expensive ones, you really soon want more and the leather is expensive of course. Aside from that, I'm from The Netherlands where you can't just walk into a leathercraft store, unfortunately. Many things must be ordered from abroad. I hope to finish my thesis and education soon and after that, I want to spend more time getting proficient in leathercraft. Whether it will remain a hobby besides another job or become more of a job for me too (maybe even including vlogging, love the makervloggery initiative!), I don't know yet, but you've definitely gotten me interested in the latter!
A young man who is full of energy , so sympathetic with a big smaile, a giving man, and also a good leathercraft teatcher. I wish you all the best. Konstantinos from Grecce.
I legit just commented something super similar Jan 4 2021!He’s so happy and clearly absolutely loves what he does! And I can’t stress that enough for everyone to find that job to do the rest of their life or multiple jobs! Or atoeast hobbies for sure! Kudos to this other young man for sure!!!
Man, I'm in Greece and I want to get started with leathercraft and - as you know - there's not a lot of resources in Greece regarding how to start. His energy and smile have been a driving force!
I had to pause the video at 27 sec in just to say.. You have the most Appealing camera presence and welcoming energy. after watching I must say you've covered my questions on what I'm about to watch and if this is going to be what I need to watch before wasting my time, instead its EXACTLY what this somewhat beginner needed to hear and not confusing at all. THANK YOU !
Opened this leather kit i just got in the mail, in front of my pc. I say to myself, "ok let's start lookin around on youtube and see what all of this stuff is" . Go through about 10 vids without full explanation of what the purpose of everything is and it's actual applications, and not just what you use it for. Next video I click is yours. 2 mins in and I subscribed. This is EXACTLY the kind of video you hope to find when you're picking up a hobby and feel intimidated. Thank you for this.
I must say that you were amazing!!! I have watched about ten to fifteen "Beginner" leather craft videos today and more than a few over the past few weeks. Your video was the best!!! You were highly energetic, genuinely happy, engaging, and positive!!! Thank you. I have subscribed to your page and not that you need it, but still gave this video a thumbs up.
Playing in the snow was icing on my cake. The little one is precious. Thanks for the tip, I’m a beginner and don’t know where to start. But I have some leather 😂😂😂
I just found all the tools that my late aunt gave me 45 years ago as a kid. Your videos have inspired me to start again. Keep those videos coming... Thanks!
I wish I could post pictures. My grandpa used to work with leather and I have his old tools. Oooooolllllddddd tools! I’m going to start doing it myself. I am so excited!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are so on the money with the "CLEANNESS" (is there such a word?) of your videos. No shaky, hand held camera, no in and out of focusing, no extracurricular animals wandering through, no sounds of diesel air horns interrupting the monologue, no wife or girlfriend (or both :) ) interrupting in mid stream, no uhs and ahs and well, er, etc., etc. In short, no crap. Short and sweet, stays focused and right on point, packing plenty of good info into a short space. What a win-win in that you are concise and clean in the production and you don't waste your viewers' time to boot. As others have commented: full of energy, a big smile and a good teach. Looking forward to watching all your videos and getting started in leatherworking. Thank you for an excellent video and wishing you continued success. You deserve it.
So here I am, in Denmark, wanting to make shamanic rattles and trying to figure out what basic leather tools I need, and I am just hit by the joy of creativity that bursts from this video some dude across the Atlantic made. If there is a thing youtube is really good for, it's sharing that common human enjoyment associated with *mAkInG StuFF*! Man it gets the creative juices flowing. Also, thank you for the advice, super useful :)
Thank you soo much!!! I been thinking about leather making because I’m a picky wallet woman. I’m a minimalist carrying essential cards yet being a woman I also want it to be cute and feminine look. I’ve been trying to study on my own but no luck till magically my bio dad started his own leather work company and I asked him for help and he send me a box of 160 pieces for leather making. After watching so much videos this is the most detailed one to pick through the box to start off before using whatever I have left for the future. Thank you
This is awesome. Haven't even done my first piece yet, my plans are making a few bags for my bike, walked into the Harley shop, and seen a very simple leather bag, I mean very very simple, for 350 bucks. I may have been born at night, but not last night. Long story short, I'm making my own, plus there's a few other things that I want to make to. So thanks for giving up the tool names. Awesome
I have an HD also. I'm looking into making brown saddlebags for mine. Thinking about doing a bit of basket stamping in the corners. Never done it before but it ain't rocket science right? ....rubber side down
just saw a PBS show about you and your company. From the location shots I think you live not too far from where My son used to live. Really like your video. As a leather craftsman of many years, I still learn from you. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for sharing your enthusiastic attitude towards leathercraft. I can see how it made you an inspiring question just by the way you say your words. THANK YOU again.
Why would some people give a thumbs down to this video? I really enjoyed it...very helpful & interesting, and presented in a friendly and engaging manner! Thank you!
I'm a steel rigger and have been planning on making my own workman's tool belt. I've never done leatherwork before so am clueless where to start. Your video is great. It quickly gives a novice understanding of the purpose behind each tool, along with tips and demonstrations. And the examples of your own work in the background is wonderful. I look forward to seeing more of your vids....; keep up the good work! From another Aussie fan👌
Getting into leather working is a lot easier than people might think. I wanted to try some things out before spending a lot of money on tools. Before I bought the diamond chisels for stitching I used a tiny nail and measured out each hole. Don’t recommend it but doable. My first burnishing tool was the bottom of a Dr Pepper bottle. Technically worked.
Good advice from someone who knows what he is doing never goes astray. I liked and subscribed while you were rounding off valuable advice for people starting off especially.
Thank you for the "how to use" and "why" for each tool! Educational on its own. After making several bicycle tool boxes, I now know how to use my edge beveler and a wood slicker (have to buy one!) to finish off the edges! .
Dude 2 years later from you making I see this video now I’m getting into knife and sheath making.... I love your vibe and happiness! Seems you really love what you do and I applaud that bro! Congrats following your passion my G!
I do a little here and there with leather and stumbled upon your channel. I'm glad I did, your fun, remind me of a buddy I got. And I love your tips getting back in to it. Keep the videos coming!
Many people want to change their life by taking up a craft. A good craftsman like you who inspires people to make that first step, comes before any of the tools on that list above.
Your energy alone made me choose to subscribe then, the information was wonderfully delivered. At the end, adding your family into the skit was precious. I admire you Sir! Thanks for sharing!
Im just starting out working with leather to incorporate it into my already existing business and this video really helped. I appreciate you taking your time to make and post these videos.
Great video and perfectly pitched. This is my very first ever step into leatherwork. I love it already..... Just need to buy a house near this dude so I can visit him A LOT. Thanks I appreciate the video more than you know. I'm going on a course in a few weeks to begin my journey with the new venture. Cheers again
Thanks so much for doing this video. I bought a cheap kit on amazon and will end up needing to replace most of these tools but I wanted to dip my toes before I dive in. Thanks again!
at first, i thought this is gonna be a long-winded explanation of each tool. Thank you for making it interesting and I love the vibe when you're explaining things! Gonna get some of these tools on your list!
Great video. I have made lots of leather items. Mostly Indian regalia type stuff. However, I am going to attempt to make a holster for my revolver. In researching how to videos, I came across your page. I appreciate this one because it has given me an idea of tools I need to buy. At least a starting point. You are very good at what you do and I look forward to watching your other videos. Thank you. Keep up the great work.
I took up leather work as part of my new knife making hobby. I was fortunate that I lived near a Tandy store and they had a really good starter class on Saturdays. I took the class cuz they didn't have UA-cam videos with ole George Hurst back then, heck they didn't have an internet back then lol. It was very helpful and I made my first knife sheath that turned out really nice. You're giving some good advice so good job. I still learn new stuff. I found stitching chisels are good for making a straight line and for thin leather, but they're really not suitable for much over 10 oz of thickness although they're better than overstitch wheels for marking. I made a system for getting all my holes to line up on my knife sheaths cuz with going through 3 layers of heavy leather I don't like the way drilled holes look.
Thanks for posting this. I just got started with a knife sheath, and I'm 54! Love your encouraging manner, and I hope this turns out to be something I can do a in my retirement someday. Peace!
You showed stitching needles while stating harness needles. I completely agree that harness needles are the way to go. I've lost track of how many stitching needles that I've broken (always at the eye). The harness needles are more difficult to thread, but they don't break. If you stick with lightweight leather, stitching needles are fine, but if you are working with heavy leather, count on breaking several. This is a good list. I didn't start out with a head knife, and the longer I went without one, the harder it was to talk myself into getting one. But they are worth getting, and if is on a "start up" list you won't have to talk yourself into getting one, and you'll have it at hand from the start. No depriving yourself of the benefits of a head knife.
Dude, you're awesome! I have recently taken this up and I am working on my first wallet. So far, so good! The tools will make or break your final product. This list is awesome!! Thank you!!
Perfect description of how to get started. Most businesses start as a hobby and blossom into a really good business. Your enthusiasm is terrifically inspiring. Keep it up! Best regards, Richard
I really like this video. I appreciate it. I understand it would have been so hard to narrow it down. When I first was looking into leather craft and tools needed I came across a video saying "It is not a cheap hobby." This shines a light on me.
Wish I saw this before going to Tandy....the rep didn't know much and sadly an enthusiast gave me items I didn't end up using....for a basic knife roll. Going to use your link for local pick up. Thanks again!
I agree with your opinion. It is also interesting to know your opinion about my videos. In one of the videos, I made a leather clutch with jewelry brass knuckles in the form of rings.
Thank you SO much for this. I've been kicking around the idea of picking up leather working as a hobby, but have always gotten scared away when I see the number of special tools. I might have to give it a go after all!
Thank you for the list, i'm starting out leatherworking cause i wanted to use this skill for my other hobby which is armored combat and wanted to wear leather armor but dont want to spend that nearly $800 buying a chest but instead only spend $200 to make the armor myself and repair it when needed
Very well produced video. Ive been playing around with leather for a few months and i must say im hooked!! Thanks for taking the time to help the noobs.
I agree with your opinion. It is also interesting to know your opinion about my videos. In one of the videos, I made a leather clutch with jewelry brass knuckles in the form of rings.
Thank you for this very informative video. I'll do a search for your video you said you would make on saddle stitching, which must have been made by now. Adorable little angel at the end of the video by the way.
All the luck and prosperity to you and your family business. You have an infectious exuberance and love for your craft that cannot be contained. I am glad an old company like Tandy partnered with you!! Give them as much shameless plug as you can! Wishing you a fantastic new year.
As I have become a little more advanced in my leather crafting I have wanted to invest in a round knife but they are a pricey Item .I have been using a vintage shoemaker/cobbler's knife I got of ebay from the Ukraine for 20 bucks it is awesome ...You have such amazing tools! Great video! thanks
Hey, thanks for this vid. Your content is so helpful. I'm a home sewer, I do lots of work with heavy denim & canvas. I'm looking to expand in to leather work and this has inspired me to get going.
Great! Cheap and simple is exactly what I was looking for. I'd hate to invest several hundred only to find out I don't like it or don't have the time for it.
Very practical advice, you explain it in a way that makes you see why you need this 2 pronger too (for around the corner). I learn a lot from your videos as complete beginner
Man it's hard to narrow it down to only 10! Let me know if you think there are any tools you think I should've added to the list
Stock & Barrel Co a heavier maul or mallet is also invaluable for hardware setting (snaps, rivets, etc)
A steel (metal) ruler! I just bought one from a local hardware store and it's just a great cutting guide and measurement tool. An upgrade from that would be a carpenter's square (or whatever you call them in English).

Don’t over complicate things is a great piece of advice.

Happy birthday

Came for knowledge, ended up with that, plus positive energy.

I love that idea proud craft men!!
I love that you’re trying to grow the passion in others. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

It's my new hobby 🌈
Great video. I have made lots of leather items. Mostly Indian regalia type stuff. However, I am going to attempt to make a holster for my revolver. In researching how to videos, I came across your page. I appreciate this one because it has given me an idea of tools I need to buy. At least a starting point.
You are very good at what you do and I look forward to watching your other videos. Thank you. Keep up the great work.

Here is a new subscriber from India.

Wish I saw this before going to Tandy....the rep didn't know much and sadly an enthusiast gave me items I didn't end up using....for a basic knife roll. Going to use your link for local pick up. Thanks again!

Snow means ADVENTURE !!
As a woodworker looking into leatherwork this video is great!
(I might be able to make the wood slicker)
Great info 👍 thanks!
I agree with your opinion. It is also interesting to know your opinion about my videos. In one of the videos, I made a leather clutch with jewelry brass knuckles in the form of rings.
You look so happy and look like you smile a lot ^.^ makes me smile
it was a very healpful video for the beginners,
Thanks.

Glad it was helpful!
