Getting to know my local Deer in the Yard - ASMR
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- I’ve been in my new house for nine months now, and I see the same group of deer almost every day. They are slowly becoming more and more curious about me. Some of them have figured out that scratching with a hand is similar to grooming with a tongue.
The buck you see in this video, I call him Larry, has been in my yard a lot over the rut season, which is just ending. That's why two year old Susie in the video is keeping an eye on him. Susie is a real character. Ever since my first days in the house, she has had a constant interest in everything I do. She would often come up to me and smell my hand - a typical deer greeting. After about eight months of her following me around the yard, standing some feet away while she watched me rake pine needles or move rocks around, she started to lick my hand in the same way she licks other deer. I scratched back, and for about ten seconds she would really like that. Then she would tilt her head back and just look at me, as if thinking the whole thing over. A few days ago I was walking around the yard with the video camera and came across Susie's six month old sister who is very curious and brave. Susie watched us closely when the fawn took a short interest in mutual grooming. I then sat down off to the side of where the small herd was hanging out and just let the camera roll. Larry had been chasing the females around the yard, but had finally settled down. After about ten minutes, Susie strolled over. It was the first time that she indicated that she made up her mind about me. I was lucky to have the camera rolling!
For those of you familiar with our Deer in the Yard videos, all of our previous videos were at Marlis’ house around the corner from my new house. Now that we have two yards with two different groups of deer, our Deer in the Yard videos will show scenes from both yards.
We have known all the generations of deer in Marlis’ yard for almost 17 years. I’m just getting to know my local group. It’s been nine months of them seeing me every day before they have begun to feel really at ease. Although they are “neighbors” with Marlis’ deer, the deer have an invisible line a few hundred yards from my house that is the border with Marlis' deer's territory. The bucks cross the borders, but the females and fawns have stricter routines, and females will chase other females away if they cross zones.
"My" deer used to hang out in my yard before I moved in, and when I put a salt block in the yard, put in two bird baths always full with water, regularly spill bird food when I fill up the bird feeder, and generally respect their space, over all these months they have come to accept my presence more and more. Our local deer are very careful about who they befriend. If anyone else walks into the yard without me there, they will usually run away. However, when Marlis walks over to my house, they will carefully watch her coming from a quarter mile away, but then they will approach her when she comes into my yard. They have met her many times before, but she doesn’t live here, and so they are taking their time getting to know her. Still, as soon as she approaches, they sense that she is somehow, in some deer sense, “okay.”
The music in the video is a piece we call, "In's Herz der Dinge," in English meaning "Into the heart of things."
The version in this video is from a concert recording that we never put on a CD, but another nice version of it is on this CD from us: starseedmusic.n...
I like to think the music in the background wasn't added in post. He just has a huge loud speaker on top of his house constantly blasting relaxing bangers.
Thats more probablr
Deer: "I don't know what the hell these two-leggers are all about, but this one plays some sick tunes. Let's go say hi!"
I’d like to think it isn’t speakers, but instead a full orchestra that follows him for mood music.
That's the secret deer music, those animals play it the same way cats do purrs, only to the people found worthy
Banger means a song that gets you moving or excited how is this a banger even if it's relaxing

I get happy if my local deer just let me stand on my deck and watch them without looking nervous; or bringing their babies through as they graze. They are beautiful, smart and curious beings. Developing a relationship with wild deer takes a long time. They learn what our schedule is and are always sitting outside our door when we get home from work. We are actually able to call out to them by name , and they will come running out of the woods in response. They seem to understand human emotion and show concern when we are upset about something, and will only leave our side when we reassure them that we are just fine. Our deer are our best friends, and it is hard to imagine life without them.
SusanScrapPassion are you sure they are that smart? What about them getting hit by a car. They just run for it. But the rest of the stuff you said are true.

This makes me miss my “pet” deer! I believe it was 2008, Found her when she was a baby, her mother was hit by a car with her body in the middle of the road. my grandfather moved her to the ditch and found the baby, so he decided to take her home that night. Raised her on baby formula and kept her in the house, eventually we released her outside when she could eat feed herself with feed/grass, since we lived in the country and on my grandfathers land, we knew if she stayed on it, she wouldn’t get hunted. She disappeared for a week but came back early in the morning for feed! She kept coming back for food everyday, sometimes bringing friends with her. She was friendly with people and let us pet her but she was still wild. She had babies every spring, she wouldn’t let you touch them but she’d let you get close, it was cute until I moved away from the country to the city in 2010. My grandparents never saw her again around in 2017, so she may not be alive anymore but this vid brings back my childhood. :)
So update as of 2021:
We know she has passed of 2017 because I learned my grandfather went out into the woods one day (I asked if he ever knew what happened to her) and saw remains of a female deer on the side of the road near his land. She was hit. (Kinda like how her mother died :(. ) and he could recognize her easily. But I hear till today her oldest offspring still come around but are not fully okay with humans like her but they don’t run away if you approach them but they don’t like getting touched. Is fun to see that that her offspring are bringing their offspring to his porch and feeding. Her oldest offspring are quite old but she had twins, a doe and a buck. They come around separately but don’t mind you sitting near them or watching them. I learned this as of last month when visiting my grandparents and seeing her old “babies”. They two offspring look like the first pair she had so that probably makes them 11 years old, which I understand is old. The buck is really pretty but shaggy and sometimes brings his does around.
Also I’m seeing a lot of people are debating, so yes she was a whitetail and yes she is dead. She died in 2017 from a car.
that is cute
So adorable. Hopefully she is well.

There must be such a strong bond of trust between human and deer that she allows you to scratch her, where predators would kill her with a bite in the neck.
It's how we domesticated all animals: pet them.
@slothkingn1 pet them
@slothkingn1 So pet them for generations.
Honestly, though, I don't think you deserve the praise you've gotten for this comment. Everything you said was right. I just don't understand why you said it. You responded as if the original comment was suggesting that this guy was domesticating deer. He never said that. To me, it doesn't even seem as if he was suggesting it. You obviously can't domesticate an already living animal. So, coming in here correcting him on the nature of domestication when the nature of domestication was never in question is ridiculous. He was speaking of the process. And, he's honestly not far off. Pet and feed them. The only other thing that needs to be done is setting boundaries.
Thus, pet them for generations.
@slothkingn1 Fair enough. Still felt a bit like a non sequitur, though.
@slothkingn1 whoosh
@@inharmonywithearth9982 That's not domestication, that's pacification. Domestication is genetic. You can't change the genetics of an animal that is still alive.

Thank you for sharing. I live in Cornwall on a quiet piece of land right next to the sea and surrounded by farm and woodland. I often get visits from a solitary Doe and after 6 months of getting to know me, she now lets me stroke her and takes Apples straight from my hand. If she visits and I don't immediately go out, she comes to the French doors from the garden to the kitchen and gently nuts the door with her head to get my attention. Whenever I see her, it always makes my day 😀

They are so precious. How wonderful to have a friendship with such beautiful, gentle souls.
We live with cottontails with whom we have a similar arrangement. They come and go as they please, but they interact with us as if we are part of their social group. They are surprisingly intelligent, though in a completely alien-to-human way. We can recognize primitive mammalian communications in each other, but they have much more "language" in common with our domestic rabbit companions than they do with us. Their vocalizations to each other are fascinating, and we may yet study these in more detail. They are lovely. Almost like tiny versions of your deer friends. :)
