- This is from the famous LIVE recording on July 22, 1955 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA.
We, Gospel Music historians, call the 1955 Shrine Concert great because gospel's once and future male superstars, 24-year-old Sam Cooke, 23-year-old James Cleveland, both performed on the program. James Cleveland, pianist for Albertina Walker and the Caravans, was the surprise hit that night. His gruff, commanding baritone, a voice that would be a force in gospel music for the next 36 years, was already in evidence in this live recording from the Shrine Concert. This was truly a great night in Gospel Music history.

He was introduced to me thru his music in 1955 by my youngest aunt. She played his songs day and night, he would wreck a church or whatever venue he and the Soul Stirrers sang at. They were coming to a city near us and they hung his posters high to keep fans from taking them down. That didn't my aunt, she waited until everyone was in bed, woke me, got a ladder , took me with her , held the ladder as I went up and took the poster down, she still had that poster in 2010.
The undisputed greatest voice to EVER touch this side of Earth. He was truly anointed, this is nothing but God given ability. The world has existed for many years since Sam Cooke’s death and still no one can touch this. Wish I could have met the man. Continue to rest in heavenly peace.
Anyone with good ear and common sense have to admit that Sam Cooke produced the greatest sound ever created.
I was that child, thank you mom for never seizing to pray for me. Now His all I want.

It is April 8, 2020. I am 15 years old and that anointing will never expire. I honestly wish they had this song on Apple Music so I can loop it forever. You don’t need new music to grab the attention of the youth; Mr. Cooke will be grabbing the attention of everyone until the rapture comes

Tears flowing from this 78 yr old white guy. I pity those people who know not the Holy Spirit as it flows from within and out.

I wish I could have been there @ the 1955 Shrine Concert. Although it has been 57 years ago, it still seem as if he is still here. In Loving Memory of our Dear Sam Cooke , Please continue to RIP! I knew of Sam Cooke, "Twisting the night away," hearing it in Ireland in the 1970's.
I praise God that I've discovered the blessing that Sam was, and is to believers in Jesus, through the gift of his voice, singing alongside the Soul Stirers.

I feel so privileged to not only have been introduced to Mr. Cooke's music by my parents, but to read about many of your personal experiences of seeing him live and actually meeting him. I almost feel cheated having not seen him and many other fantastic singers and recording artists of his era and beyond. But at the same time, lucky to be able to hear his music thanks to the internet which otherwise would be impossible. Thank you to all who contribute their stories in writing. I saw Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers September and October 1955 in my hometown of Charleston, SC along with Ira Tucker and the Dixie Hummingbirds. I was fourteen at the time and sang with a teenage Gospel Group, "The Southern Hummingbirds" and we all went to hear Sam and Ira. I remember the Soul Stirrers opened with "Wonderful," and Sam must have held that opening note on Wonderful for a minute twisting it until women were screaming and falling out. They did these same songs on UA-cam and the church was on fire when he talked about his mother in "Nearer to Thee." After the program was over one of our members, Calvin, who had polio when he was young and walked with one crutch went to Sam's dressing room and banged on the door with his crutch yelling, "Sam, come on out." Sam, being the down-to-earth man he was, came out in his bath robe, greeted each one of us kids individually with a handshake, autographed each of our picture we had purchased of him and the group, and hung with us for a few long minutes. When he was about to leave, he shook each one of our hands again and said, :Fellows, I will be back here next month and I want you guys to come back and see me." Well, the next month he was back with the Soul Stirrers and naturally we hung around until he came out of his dressing room. The first thing he said was, "I told you guys I would be back." Can you imagine how proud and important we felt because he remembered us kids! Two members of my teenage group came down from New York about ten years ago to visit me in Virginia, and we reminisced about meeting Sam and how charismatic he was with us. He made us feel so good and he became our Gospel role model. When he was killed December 11th,1964 we felt as if we had lost a big brother. My kids grew up listening to Sam and we still have so many pictures of him in our home. People have asked, "Were you related to Sam?' because of all the pictures. He lives on in our hearts. Gone much too soon (1931-1964), but never forgotten.

I was only eight years old when he died you would wonder how can a eight years old child remember ....My mother love music we played Sam Cook religiously.....I remember how sad our family were when he died ...Ill be 61 next week and I can't get his music out my head because I want to be nearer to thee....I love you Sam tell my Mom I love her.

Soul Stirrers, Sensational Nightingales, Dixie Hummingbirds, Mighty Clouds of Joy, they were all great quartet groups that we LOVED back in those days! My Daddy would sit and play these groups' albums in the living room on the record player, and we just LOVED it and LOVED those groups!
