I'm not a 2D/3D animator, so the tangibility of stop motion was perfect for me as I could physically build stuff and get involved in the animation. Yes, I'm open to combining stop motion with digital compositing, in fact Zero has a bit of this going on. Check out our other video "Zero - Pre & Post Compositing".

Believe it or not, this was my first stop motion animation. Honestly, the secret is just make very small movements and learn how to ramp up and down your motion, i.e pay attention to how fast and slow things move when they go from stop to start and be sure to add a little swing and bounce in the movements.

We originally made Zero for a film festival that required you have the No. 8 appear somewhere in the film. So we came up with a world about these characters with numbers that deemed their position in society. The themes grew out of that. Yes, we had story boarded some shots that we didn't end up shooting, you kind of come up with creative work arounds as you go along that are more efficient or tell the story better. We didn't shoot the scenes in the order of which they appear in the storyboard.

Hi, glad you enjoyed it. The prototypes we picked weren't based on vote, rather which ones worked the best. The camera was a Canon 450d using Nikon prime lenses (old ones we bought second hand from eBay). We used 98% of the footage we shot, but did trim a number of clips and did some reshuffling of some of the scenes in the edit.

Generally speaking, people don't make short films to make money, they make them for experience and for their showreels. Zero received part of its budget from a government grant, but I also paid for much of it from my savings. It helps to make your short while also working another job so you have continued income (as was the case during Zero).
