      @@HistoryTimes The maps look wrong too.
      I am no expert so I am cautious about nitpicking most times but...
      Norway is shown in dark redin an early map and it just looks wrong to me. It included moors that only the laps would live in (if anyone) and it didn't stretch as far up the coast as places like Trondheim (which definitely was part of Norway) .
      I just looked at it again.
      It looks like it is done on purpose. Maybe some areas were refusing to be vassals of the Norwegian Kings.

      @@dramit1815 Hehe yeah. History isn't like a disney film I'm afraid. An example of norse history that always put its mark on me was how Olav Haraldsson (the holy) when gathering norway under the cross, had his opposition killed in hedmark by burning their house as they slept and cutting them down as they tried to escape the flames. (a common tactic). And then enslaving and gouging out the eyes of his most vocal and powerful opponent King Rørek Dagson. Rørek lived a miserable life as the kings thrall. Forced to be close to him at all times (keep our enemies closer).. He once in his misery and hatred attempted to take the life of the king during mass in church.. since the king would not be wearing armor to church, but despite the lack of armor, Olaf's thick clothes and cloak kept him from coming to serious harm as Rørek's blindness prevented him from an accurate strike. As Olaf barely dodged Rørek's second blow with the dagger, Rørek shouted "You run from me King Olav, a blind man?" (he used his nickname Olav Digre (olav the large). This was Rørek's last chance and was taken from the church by Olav's men and exiled to greenland. However he died on iceland before the final crossing to greenland.
      Quite a miserable fate. He was far from the protagonist of Olav's story, but I could genuinely empathize with Rørek. A petty king whose lands and people were taken from him. His family and everything. Blinded. Forced to live near the man who took everything from him. And even his last act of revenge turned out to be impotent. And yet there's a measure of respect and balls to a man like that.
      So many great stories from that time. Snorri's works , 100% true or not are a great gift to all of us. Not just northerners who want to learn about their history.

    "What is that has broken with such a terrible noise" King Olaf shouted at Einar.
    "Norway, from thy hands, my king" Einar Tambarskelfr answered, throwing his bow, broken in two.
    " no! Not as terrible as that, take, use mine! "The king commanded with a hint of desperation in his voice, giving his bow to Einar.
    Tambarskelfr took it and said "it's to weak a bow for a strong king"
    Then, Einar Tambarskelfr took sword and shield, and fought bravely till the end.

    Fantastic video. I'm glad to see this channel is growing steadily. It was 68'000 subscribers just a couple months ago and now it's 81'000! It deserves far more though! Hoping more people catch up on this channel as it deserves to be as popular as Bazbattles and Kings of generals etc

    Olaf Tryggvason and Harald Hardråde would make great movie characters with the right director at the helm. Their lives had more than enough of the ingredients for an interesting movie: drama, tragedies, humiliation, underdog, top dog, epic adventures, kingship, breaking bad, betrayals, epic last stands, etc. All in one historic character.

    in the Baltic Sea they were captured by Estonian vikings, and the people aboard were either killed or taken as slaves. Olaf became the possession of a man named Klerkon, together with his foster father Thorolf and his son Thorgils. Klerkon considered Thorolf too old to be useful as a slave and killed him, and then sold the two boys to a man named Klerk for a ram. Olaf was then sold to a man called Reas for a fine cloak
    Many years later, when Olaf was freed by his uncle. one day in the Novgorod marketplace Olaf encountered Klerkon, his enslaver and the murderer of his foster father. Olaf killed Klerkon with an axe blow to the head. A mob followed the young boy as he fled to his protector Queen Allogia, with the intent of killing him for his misdeed. Only after Allogia had paid blood money for Olaf did the mob calm down.

    Haakon broke his allegiance to Denmark. Harald Bluetooth had suffered defeat from Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor during 974. Haakon took advantage of the weakened position of the Danish king to make Norway independent of Denmark. So there should be no reason to write (Denmark) under Norway and Lade during that time period. I still loved the video. Keep up the good work!
    I would love to see the Battle of Hjörungavágr where Haakon Jarl defeats the Danish invasion fleet of Jomsvikings sent by Sweyn Forkbeard.

    He lived an adventurous and heroic life (who also gets the pretty princesses along the way), Olaf is man among men. But a bit rash, though if the allied fleet didn't betray him, he could have won, and north Europe history would have changed forever.

      "Heroic life" Like he used 3/4 of his time killing and plundering Civilians? Maybe a "brave" life is more fitting.

    • @joshuamarvin7400
      @joshuamarvin7400 4 роки тому +3

      He already changed norther European history by introducing Christianity en-masse to the Norwegians...something that was going to happen sooner or later, and better it be by Olaf early than at the tip of a German or English sword later on.

    • @ChaosToRule
      @ChaosToRule 4 роки тому +2

      The allied fleet was Jomsvikings. True pagans who lived and died for Odin and Valhalla, it was foolish of Olaf to think they would stand with such a man. Also I have heard accounts of Olaf being known for nailing infants to doorways. He deserved everything bad coming his way.

    • @joshuamarvin7400
      @joshuamarvin7400 4 роки тому +2

      @@ChaosToRule I can tell this is a touchy subject for you, but learn to have a little perspective on history. For one, a lot of people DID stand with a such a man, and died for him, and faith, far as I can tell, mattered little and less in that war except as a propaganda point used by his enemies. It was all about prestige, power, and position. He had, others wanted, hence bloodshed. Same old story, there were no gods or heroes on either side, just ambitious men.
      Also....'accounts' of him 'being known' to do something sounds a hell of a lot like unsubstantiated hearsay.
