Big Project Episode 18 - GMC Motorhome / American LaFrance / COE

This is my first attempt to built a vehicle as well as the biggest project I've ever tried. It is surprising how fast it is moving along.

have you thought about the gearing with the taller tyres? still loveing it

! That is absolutely one of the biggest concerns. I don’t know what gearing this one has but chances are it is currently a 3.07 which is considered too high for it as a stock motorhome. A popular upgrade is (I think) a 3.70. I’m thinking I’d like to get something in the 4’s or 5’s. That is something to work out down the track though; lots of hurdles to overcome before I get to that one.

Is it possible to put adual axle defferintial /4 wheel drive & steer up-front of the GMC Motorhome to make it more versatile . Can we.?

I’m sure it is but it would be a much more complex build. For me, the best attributes of any variation of the GMC motor home was the air ride suspension, high vehicle GVW and low floor height.

What about an rack and pinion set up?

? That sounds interesting…I’ll look into that. It might be a good alternative to this original set up if it fails.

could you expand on that? How would a rack and pinion setup help with my problem of the steering box being four feet in front of the axle?

U ruined a gmc motor home for that!! You could have used a Olds tornado and not done that

It was already ruined. I’ve given a new life…it’s alive…ALIVE! Besides, I also needed the rear bogies.
