    I love it! Thanks for the "pivot" laugh too. I think I am going to like the tree in there much better. Lots of height and a screen too....kinda peeking thru a view is nice to me. Love it!

    The pivot is such a good point to make... but love the other point about investing in pots. This is necessary and valuable encouragement to drop that coin. Thanks!!

    I used to have trouble with roses, too. Then I discovered the Canadian bred Explorer series roses, which were bred specifically for surviving severe winters without any protection (some down to zone 2) There's a handful of varieties, look them up and see if you like any!

    The dogwoods look fantastic in those pots. I agree, the height was needed. I love blue lobelia. The blue just glows. I have it mixed with euphorbia at the base of my potted clematis.

    Great one, Erin! I love that pivot! I'm sure they will be gorgeous. I have wanted roses for my garden for so long, but our deer presence here is so heavy, I have shied away. We use Bobex every 2 weeks religiously, just to keep them at bay. Love the pot tip! I'm pretty picky when it comes to pots, and will pass them up if not the right shape or color. I'm going to read that blog, and try it!

    Fabulous idea!! I agree that the height was sorely needed and these dogwoods have such a beautiful habit that the effect will be gorgeous either in or out of bloom. Now - will you over-winter these in your garage as well? I’m assuming so...
    And your sweet doggo with the blue bandana(?), lying there like such a good boy for the duration of the film. Mine would have been in and out of the pot, in and out of every bag out there, in and out of my face and would likely have knocked the camera from its tripod. 🤣🤣👍. Thanks again. Erin. Love your stuff.

    I think that roses actually like a mild climate (Portland, OR, the city of roses: tons grow wild and most domestic need very little care.) In an earlier comment someone told about winter hardy bred roses...might be on to something...none the less, I think the dogwood is brilliant and wonderful!!

    thanks for the laugh! I've been working so hard on letting go of any expectations I had for where I would be in all my garden renovation projects, some days are better than others. The cold spring really has impacted many set flowers, it's been a strange season for peonies which are almost finishing up and all my early roses are slightly different colors. I love the dogwood choice and agree 100% about good containers, nice outlet find!

    I have a 4 or 5 year old single-trunk pagoda and it's 12 ft tall x 15 ft wide. Awesome trees/shrubs. Would highly recommend them for people up north. Never seen one in a container, might be interesting. For in-ground pagodas, make sure you give it room to spread out, because that's what it naturally wants to do. Will get very wide. Plus avoid pruning it as it looks best in it's natural state. You can prune, but only do it if you have to.

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  3 роки тому +1

      These won’t be long for these containers. I think three years is about the max they’ll be happy there and then they’ll get planted in the landscape, where I have others growing.

    Agree totally about roses here. I’m in Lake Country and have only had success with rugosas or the Canadian Explorer series, esp William Baffin or John Cabot. Some of these are thorny monsters so need lots of room and would not be good for containers but at least you have tons of rose blooms with disease resistance, hardiness etc. Oh to be able to grow a true English/David Austin rose..have lost too many even with elaborate coverings...

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  4 роки тому

      I have several David Austins that do well in the ground here. My William Baffin was a bore, very sporadic flowering, so he got the hook. And the Oso Easy roses also do well for me, but I don’t really consider them roses as there is no scent to speak of. As for roses in containers some do better than others but I haven’t cracked the code on why yet.

  • @AJsGreenThumbLLC
    @AJsGreenThumbLLC 4 роки тому

    They look gorgeous Erin! It does all work out in the end doesn't it? I'm finding out that pruning the tips of woody perennials and shrubs stimulates growth and lessens transplant shock. The roots don't have to work as hard to hydrate entire plant. That is a beautiful entryway!

  • @christinepops5100

    An excellent pivet!!! Love this look, will look great year round and you won't have to move heavy pots in and out of the garage. I thought both the pots and urn were cement, great job on the staining.

    I just hate it when I receive root bound shrubs. I am always afraid of being too harsh detangling them. It was a good tutorial seeing how you handled it. What is annoying is nurseries that sell them in this condition. Price them so someone will purchase them before they get into that condition.

    Now that's a great pivot! Love dogwoods! That was a great choice over having to mess with the roses where they couldn't be themselves without a lot of help. Being the dogwoods are zone 3, can you just leave them in the pots outside for the winter? I don't do much of any container gardening, but that might be of interest to me, especially because I am SICK of losing expensive plants to voles! Also, what material are those pots made from?

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  4 роки тому

      I don't know yet. The dogwoods are hardy enough that they should be able to survive in the container, and I believe those containers are frost resistant, but they can't stay where they are in winter (snow removal issues), so they will either have to go in the garage or be moved to somewhere out of the way. I think I'd prefer to leave them out of the garage if possible.
