Bob Sharp racing!! In the mid80s whilst in my university yrs at Syracuse, I acquired a mint 81 280zx turbo, T-Tops, black w/ gold BBS type wheels, black rear and side louvers and smoked acrylic front headlight covers that filled the existing headlight “tunnels”. I’d love to acquire a similar model
Was that the year that the Camaro in 2nd punted him off at turn 7? Newman came to a stop sideways on the grass right in front of me. I looked at him and just shook my head, as though to say, "That was a dirty move." Even though I sort of sympathized with the driver of the tatty low budget Camaro. The Z-cars would just straighten out and blast off towards the bridge so much faster than anything else there.
Wow! I haven't seen this ZX car since 1982/3. I bought my first (used) 280z from Bob Sharp Racing (the Bethel, CT) Ferrari and Datsun race shop. I was in high school and Stu, the race garage manager, would let me into the shop to look at all the BSR cars..the 300zx race car had just started its run - looked like a spaceship inside. I was hooked and saved every penny washing dishes to buy go fast parts for my Z (Koni, Panasports, air dam, etc.) and painfully taught myself tuning & set up. I was incredibly lucky (and didn't know it at the time) to witness first hand those BSR cars and am so grateful that those guys let a complete noob, high school kid into their shop. Fantastic Petrolicious!
Growing up watching this 280zx race was such an inspiration to me. And after watching the documentary about Paul's life and his love for racing really made me admire him and only buy Newman's Own salad dressing. May you RIP Mr Newman.
Must have watched Newman drive this car at Lime Rock many times. I watched cars there from 1963 to 1990 in many races and followed the trans am racing. Hate to say I owned a 260Z. Ordered a 240Z but the factory shipped a 260Z. They said "so sorry pal, you get a 260 instead". Neat to see it again.
I used to watch the IMSA races at Laguna Seca and Sears Point back in the 80's. Great rivalries back then and you could actually tell what car was being raced.
Paul Newman was and still is a very professional and personable person in both racing and film in his later years I was fortunate enough to meet him at his house to do a repair on his car and WOW was he ever a car guy and his human touch he’s done for so many people in less fortunate circumstances is beyond it all god bless a wonderful and very personable person an thanks you for being back for me ‘anyway ‘ great memories of him and his touch on life! 😎
Fantastic video Petrolicious. Nissan brought several heritage cars to our event, Z Nationals, last October and it was an absolute pleasure to have them. Expecting so much more this year.
Love the Vintage Datsun race cars. Petrolicious, please do a follow-up video on the Bob Tullius group 44 triumph tr6 race car that Paul Newman currently owns and races. The 70's Datsun Triumph rivalry was very similar to the 60's Ford Ferrari rivalry.
That is a very good, even sound for a turbo L series, partly thanks to that intake manifold with its internal velocity stacks and central throttle body, but I really want to see what the exhaust manifold looked like. I wonder if it's just as symmetrical.
I've been a "Z" guy all my life...have owned many and I have always been in love with this particular Bob Sharp Canon 280ZX. I'm a Mustang owner now but I'll definitely own another Z (280ZX to be specific) soon! I'm so happy to see this video! Thank you for posting.
Doran is something special, he filled a niche that nobody knew existed until he did it and he took it far! These cars would have been scrapped if not for him.
I once had a chance to buy a used 1970 Black 240Z with a Bob Sharp racing engine in it for $500. I was only 17, but kicking myself everyday since! What cool cars!
IS this one of Adam Carolla's - Paul Newman cars? He has 4 or 5 Newman race cars now including the Hawaiian Tropic Porsche that won class at Lemans ...
Love the video but.... that's not a 280z it's a 280zx. The 280z is the last iteration of the s30 (240z, 260z etc). This car is a 79' 280zx which is an s130.
Cool car, I had a 79ZX & an 83ZX but now have an early 240Z. Too bad they did not mention anything about the Bob Sharp Racing team who originally built the race car & campaigned it. Back in the 70's to the early 80's there was very little Nissan factory support for racing their products in North America. Teams like Bob Sharp Racing, BRE & Electramotive had to practically engineer & produce these Nissan race vehicles from the chassis up. One thing that did come from the factory is the rear wing on the car. It was homologated by Nissan using the 1000 unit 79 280ZXR model.
I think that the editing is a little off at 2:00. It sounds like his Dad used to support the Holbert Lowebrau Porsche 962. It was Kevin who did that -- wasn't it?
Correct. Just the way it was explained that was a little off. I tried to fix it with some editing magic, but it always sounded too unnatural. So I just left it as is. Cant win em all :) Thanks for checking out the video!
4:15 to just about 8:00 was all car by my count. No history lesson on Newman here, but I thought it was nice to hear the restoration angle. Different strokes for different folks i suppose.
Yes, that is correct! I recognized it in the first scene and thought, what were they doing outside of Cincinnati in Owensville, Ohio?!! Motorsports County Club of Cincinnati is such a fun place for racing carts ... I’ve never seen an actual car on that track. Then when I realized it was a Doran Racing project ... they are located near Cincy, it all connected.
Is this not the car that Adam Carolla owns? I know he has a penchant for Paul Newman's stuff. And while we are at it, its nice to hear about Doran racing and their success in building and restoring race cars, however I would have preferred to see the whole 9+ minutes to get the Petrolicious slant on this car and Paul Newman's history with it. Nevertheless, good stuff.
Eric Hakanson Penchant? Check the documentary Carolla made; 'Winning, the Racing Life of Paul Newman.' He also owns the Porsche Newman almost won Le Mans in among others. ua-cam.com/video/4Szj0gCkFuk/v-deo.html
Thanks Dave Looper, it sure is pretty! Easy to tell what engine is in it as I ran FB for a few years, and Eagles have always been the best looking cars.
A little info, this Factory backed car was soundly beaten to the championship by a privately entered obsolete Jaguar E Type series 1 roadster built by Gran Tourismo Jaguar, a seriously cool feat considering all the facts.
so cool to have a lil test track out back....man o man....so cool........love the vid....hey I love them all.......always thought this car was a bit hefty/boxy.......but the earlier Sharp/PLN z cars were pure sex.....sooooooo sexy and svelte......saw them often at LRP
Dalton Bedore I know they are different chassis. I'm talking about the 240z compared to the 280z. The 280zx is the first complete change of the z cars. I know some people don't see the ZX cars as part of the Z family but I do. I personal don't like the 280zx but I think what made the car cool was the t top and turbo.
I watched him race at Road Atlanta and take the win back in 1980. I have some pics I took from that day including several of the car.
Wow! I was born in 1980. Love paul newman and Bob Sharpe. Can you share some of the pics? I know you posted this 2 years ago but just saw it
Was that the year that the Camaro in 2nd punted him off at turn 7? Newman came to a stop sideways on the grass right in front of me. Funny,I love it.
Every time I watch a petrolicious video I'm like "this one is my favorite." But somehow they keep getting better. Cheers petrolicious
Fantastic as usual. Big fan of Paul's racing career so lovely to see this Datsun preserved for people to enjoy.
Love cars with that old Pioneer logo on them. Growing up, I had a poster on my wall with a white 911 with a huge Pioneer logo on the hood.
Mr Mok I still have some Pioneer speakers from the 80s with that logo on them. I'm installing them in my 81 Datsun 280zx.
Thompson BMX How would they sound being so old?
i use to see Newman racing this at Limerock often way back, always loved this car and how tough it looked.
love lime rock. i saw pn on the track there (missed him in the pits) towards the end of his life.
I saw Newman race this car a couple of times at San Antonio.
This makes me wanna go out and drive my Datsun really, really fast. Inspiring.
Everytime i uncap some Newman's own, i think of the good times i had with my 73 240z
zs seem to be the trend on youtube this week, from mcm’s s30 and the z from jay leno and this.

One of the few Paul Newman Datsun's that escaped Adam Carolla's collection.
Amazing video as always! Thanks Petrolicious!
My thoughts as well
Mr Newman was a beast in this.
Best Petrolicious car video of all-time!
I have a model 280ZX race car, I love it.
You guys posted this right as I'm looking into buying a 280zx... couldn't be a better time
Fantastic car from a fantastic era.
Fantastic video Petrolicious. Nissan brought several heritage cars to our event, Z Nationals, last October and it was an absolute pleasure to have them. Expecting so much more this year.
The aspect of building longevity into the car is as fascinating as the speed side of it. Redundant systems etc.
I've had Four Z's!! (My father had an jag!!) GREAT cars!!
i love that old school exhaust
Love the Vintage Datsun race cars. Petrolicious, please do a follow-up video on the Bob Tullius group 44 triumph tr6 race car that Paul Newman currently owns and races. The 70's Datsun Triumph rivalry was very similar to the 60's Ford Ferrari rivalry.
Love these videos. Any race history. Love it. I am an engineering nerd so this makes me happy.
So glad i was born in the 70's, i grew up with some of the best motorsport.
Building and sustaining a successful racing team and workshop, as a business, is just next level stuff
I used to own one of these ; an HO slot car! that's how legendary this car was.
That car is my favorite of any car ever on the planet.
Thompson BMX same here I just bought one it's a 280 zx runs awesome
I used to have this car and the camel slot tyco cars as a kid during the 80's. I remember watching them racing on the wide world of sports..
Paul Newman was such a cool guy. He is missed
WHAT A GREAT CAR ! love it

Wow, amazing work... It's like going back in the past
Refreshing to have someone at that level talking about the car
except that he talked almost exclusively about his business.
Love this video! More cars from this Doran Motorsport please!
These dudes are so chill, but seem super serious XD
Legendary
Doran is something special, he filled a niche that nobody knew existed until he did it and he took it far! These cars would have been scrapped if not for him.
very well made and interesting video. thanks for that!
Please another Datsun 510 video !!!!!
U r awesome guys 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Such a badass car!! Makes me want a Datsun 280zx very badly
Did anyone else noticed the original "Defrogger" switch at 6:43?
I really enjoyed that one, thank you.
Love the car and the video.
Doran Racing is about 20 minutes away from me.. very cool
Hopefully you will do the 510 that started it.
Met Doran once, pretty cool and interesting man to have a conversation with. Very knowledgeable and not uptight if you ask questions.
How that car is clean, so absolutely clean.
I once had a chance to buy a used 1970 Black 240Z with a Bob Sharp racing engine in it for $500. I was only 17, but kicking myself everyday since! What cool cars!
2:27 when race cams start the magic
5 minutes of Doran!
I sat in that car. In 1986, in Bob Sharp's shop.
Love it and wonder if it's Adam Corrolla's car.
It had to be, he has the money 💰 and is hooked on z day sun
At least he enjoys his money, makes me wonder why so many other bigger money stars aren't living
I love that momo Car so much I would give up my right arm for the momo racing suit so cool.
god that sounds amazing.
Wait, is that the bald guy from Brazzers driving the car on track?
Nope but the brazzer guy name is johny sins
"bald guy from Brazzers" 😂
Johnny Sins can do every profession, you should know if you were a good Brazzers follower
Thats dr johny sins to you
its Agent 47 after some cheeseburgers
2.7? Are the cylinders sleeved in this particular example?
Painstaking restoration down to every last bolt... (tail-light is out)
IS this one of Adam Carolla's - Paul Newman cars? He has 4 or 5 Newman race cars now including the Hawaiian Tropic Porsche that won class at Lemans ...
Love the video but.... that's not a 280z it's a 280zx. The 280z is the last iteration of the s30 (240z, 260z etc). This car is a 79' 280zx which is an s130.
Daniel Moore
i USED TO SEE THAT CAR AT lAGUNA
SECA AND sEARS pOINT WITH THE SUPER SMOOTH pAUL DRIVING IT.
An awesome video, thank you Petroliscious. This is what we want, the owner and the soul, not a Tiff style host.
Cool car, I had a 79ZX & an 83ZX but now have an early 240Z. Too bad they did not mention anything about the Bob Sharp Racing team who originally built the race car & campaigned it. A simple "BRAVO"!!! (with a loud and long applose)...
5:36 did he say 2.7l? Is the engine de-stroked or just a mistake?
The displacement is just shy of 2.8ltrs, but they call it a 2.8, anyways
What’s going on with the throttle linkage? Is that other link going to a MFI distribution block or something?
I think that the editing is a little off at 2:00. It sounds like his Dad used to support the Holbert Lowebrau Porsche 962. It was Kevin who did that -- wasn't it?

Beauty!
Doran commercial with a littlebit about the car
4:15 to just about 8:00 was all car by my count. No history lesson on Newman here, but I thought it was nice to hear the restoration angle. Different strokes for different folks i suppose.
And a guy driving it like he’s going to the shops
Anyone know what track this was filmed at?
www.mccofcincinnati.com/mcc.html
Yes, that is correct! I recognized it in the first scene and thought, what were they doing outside of Cincinnati in Owensville, Ohio?!! Motorsports County Club of Cincinnati is such a fun place for racing carts ... I’ve never seen an actual car on that track. Smokescreen, is that you?!
There is a tell tale wail of a meaty I-6. Close your eyes and it almost sounds like a Jaguar E type hot rod
anyone know where i could find the engine specs on this datsun
Awesome what a beast
What body kits are those? What is the front bumper?
Custom I looked for it for years kept expecting Motorsport auto to clone it and sell it
What did those switches activate before he push started the car?
Fuel pumps and ignition
Is this not the car that Adam Carolla owns? I know he has a penchant for Paul Newman's stuff. ua-cam.com/video/4Szj0gCkFuk/v-deo.html
Carolla has a lot if not most of the Newman cars. There’s a list of some that he doesn’t own and this one is on that list.
Penchant - a strong or habitual liking for something or tendency to do something.
Adam Carolla owns a Paul Newman 300ZX Z31. He also has a 2000 roadster and a 510.
Jason Wingate troll
what was the rebuild cost?
Whats the DougScore?
Snipershots Photography ,lol
It's not a thing is what it is .
Hahahaha, that's great, made me smile/snicker
👍😂👍
Whatever happened to Newman's Skyline?
its my style datsun 240 ,280 its there stron oil pomp ,water pomp and big radiator?
DATSUNNNNNNN
Does anyone know what the blue formula car is at 3:00?
73 Eagle Offy Indy car ran 7th at the 500 that year
Thanks Dave Looper, it sure is pretty! Easy to tell what engine is in it as I ran FB for a few years, and Eagles have always been the best looking cars.
How do you make the logos on your thumbnails? Please reply.
A little info, this Factory backed car was soundly beaten to the championship by a privately entered obsolete Jaguar E Type series 1 roadster built by Gran Tourismo Jaguar, a seriously cool feat considering all the facts.
4 lug...FTW!
they offering any apprenticeships like those anymore????
so cool to have a lil test track out back....man o man....so cool........love the vid....hey I love them all.......always thought this car was a bit hefty/boxy.......but the earlier Sharp/PLN z cars were pure sex.....sooooooo sexy and svelte......saw them often at LRP
I had a chance to buy a 240 Z Bob Sharp Racing Special and missed it by a day.
@jetdigital more Paul
It's a 280zx, not a 280z - big difference
tehmorbias correct, quite a big difference. Still cool as absolute fk though!
The 280z is a 240z that was destroyed by regulations.
But saved by modern technology that make them great.
Miguel Hernandez 280z and 280zx are different chassis. you're still not paying attention
Even though it's a full on race car, I'm hype to see an S130 on Petrolicious.
Cool
280ZX not Z this one S130 code i think
They're known as the Fairlady 280z in japan so hes not exactly wrong
Prefer Petrolicious when they feature classic road cars
This is Adams Corolla's car correct?
unless there was two of these, yes he is the owner.
Or not. This is the 280zx he has. ua-cam.com/video/49OyGdb_sXQ/v-deo.html
Nope. Adams is a 300zx.this is a 280zx.
