Pretty sure most everyone is aware , a 100 years coal burning underground is not something people keep quit , if you can't see it it won't happen to me thinking , guarantee, they will rebuild in same area in few decades they act like the didn't know,
Dealt with it here in Upper Appalachia years ago. Step 1, take out all the fuel ahead of the fire that you can. Step 2 build a alkaline reservoir up higher than the coal seam and let it drain through the mines, that also neutralizes acid drainage. The seams are likely a bit more convoluted up in the mountains vs down on the bottom of a glacial lake like I'm used to however.
Coal Seam Fires destroyed my Great Grandmother's house, killed her daughter and scarred her unborn child. There's no way to extinguish a coal seam fire. Nothing short of a Noah sized downpour.
Exactly..and I believe they had been burning old railroad ties a couple days before the winds. Easily could have fanned up embers from that burn pile and caught the shed on fire…the vents from the mine are 1/2 a mile up wind of the shed fire. I guess they have to investigate everything though..
There are mines all over northern Colorado. I told people years ago when everyone started building all these subdivisions all over the west. It started in the 90s. People started selling houses in Cali and coming to Colorado.
I'd like to know where any of the fire trucks are all the videos I've seen there is only one truck here or there but none putting the little fire which may have saved many homes

Problem #1: Consider the volume of water needed. Problem #2: Consider the layout of a mine. Mines have multiple levels. If water is pumped into at a surface entry the water will seek the lowest level which would bypass higher levels. Water will also seep through the walls and floors of the lower levels. This makes Problem #1 worse. Consider this: Use horizontal drilling and fracking technology. Drilling into a smoldering coal seam introduces several technical and safety issues to prevent flash over. The drilling fluid must be designed to extinguish the combustion process as well as be an effective drilling fluid. Unfortunately to then frack the coal seam an actual well bore able to withstand the fracking pressure is an expensive necessity. Once upon a time I worked at a coal fired power plant. Coal pile fires were extinguished with a combination of digging to expose them and also using tubing extensions with a steam cleaner to inject steam into the general area of the fire.

I wonder how many homeowners in the area were aware when they bought their homes that there's an underground coal fire in the area?
Only the yuppies were informed

Move to scenic West Denver, lots of open space, if you don't know what Rocky Flats was.
The snow shows if/where there are hot spots are - just like the coal seam fire near Glenwood Springs. In the winter you can see where it is.

How about 20 tank cars of carbon dioxide ?
@@jackmcandle6955 It wouldn't even notice. Coal is mostly carbon, and produces massive amounts of CO2 as it burns.

The fire burns until there is no more gases. All these houses were built in mine waste dumps.
