Great song that rocks. When I was 13 and this album came out around 1973, kids including myself, were a lot more naive back then. I remember reading the lyrics in the album liner notes and going….”what???”. I guess you could say it was educational because it was my first lesson at that age of what a lesbian is, having likely never heard of it or the term up till then! 😂

It was quite an experience seeing him perform this live. Imagine 20,000 fans singing the chorus, complete with the WOOOO's. He would kick the piano stool out behind him, sit on the floor while STILL banging on the piano. An AMAZING performer who I was BLESSED to see 13X live.😀😀😀😀

Elton John was THE MAN back in the seventies. He was all over the radio stations and could do no wrong. He could command all our emotions with so many different styles and sounds he was a musical genius. Check out Philadelphia Freedom and The Bitch is Back for another glimpse of his chameleon abilities

"Nobody plays like him!" - you got it in one boys! You are starting to realise the diversity in just one album. Think back to Funeral; Goodbye; Bennie; Candle; and compare it with Saturday. You can imagine the extended call and response with a live audience towards the end of the song, plus Elton going wild on the piano! Yeah, Davey Johnstone rocked out on this one.

From my age cohort, this would be on everyone's top 5 Elton songs. Even kids who were not particularly into Elton loved this song. Completely recognizable from first 3 drum beats before the Gibson Les Paul slams in. We all can name this song in 3 drum beats. :)

I remember a friend had an extra ticket to an Elton concert. I reluctantly helped him out by going thinking "this is going to be boring". Easily one of the best concerts I ever seen! Everyone knew every word to every song he played! He did some really soulful versions of his more commercial stuff that made you rethink everything you thought of his radio stuff. Awesome talent.

The theme of this song accurately reflects the Friday/Saturday night situation in England in the 70s (maybe still the case). Guys with no women would together in a pub until 11pm when pubs were forced to close then. With a belly full of beer they would head for a club/disco hunting for women. Usually the men outnumbered the women so fights often broke out inside or outside the club. Elton was just writing what was going on.

Bernie was satirizing lower class British thugs. My first concert was Elton touring behind this hit and album. You can imagine the crowd reaction when he played this. The analogy with Jerry Lee Lewis is accurate, and probably intentional.

Lyrics were written by Bernie Taupin. It was about his youth in the dance halls of England. Taupin wrote all of the lyrics for Elton John until he retired. Elton John's music has suffered ever since Taupin left. Elton John's band was top notch. Davey Johnstone stands out here on lead guitar.
