Great song that rocks. When I was 13 and this album came out around 1973, kids including myself, were a lot more naive back then. I remember reading the lyrics in the album liner notes and going….”what???”. I guess you could say it was educational because it was my first lesson at that age of what a lesbian is, having likely never heard of it or the term up till then! 😂

Songs I know you will love; or at least have to hear for your cultural education.
American Pie. Don McLean. A special classic of classics.
    Gimme Shelter. Rolling Stones
    Something Beatles
    Rock ‘n Roll. Led Zeppelin
    Satisfaction. Rolling Stones
    In case you haven’t yet.
So many songs……..but these are a start.

Elton John was THE MAN back in the seventies. He was all over the radio stations and could do no wrong. He could command all our emotions with so many different styles and sounds he was a musical genius. Check out Philadelphia Freedom and The Bitch is Back for another glimpse of his chameleon abilities

In 1991, like now, the world was on edge about a horrible war in the middle east: The Persian Gulf war. The U.S. and its allies had finished the air war phase, and everyone was trying to predict when the ground war would begin. One weekend I walked into a restaurnat called "European Cafe" to work my shift, and one of my co-workers said "Just heard it: The ground war's started." "I KNEW it!" I said, "I figured they'd go in on Saturday night because of the Elton John song!" Later I heard troops had indeed blasted this tune as they rolled ahead.

"Nobody plays like him!" - you got it in one boys! You are starting to realise the diversity in just one album. Think back to Funeral; Goodbye; Bennie; Candle; and compare it with Saturday. You can imagine the extended call and response with a live audience towards the end of the song, plus Elton going wild on the piano! Yeah, Davey Johnstone rocked out on this one.

The theme of this song accurately reflects the Friday/Saturday night situation in England in the 70s (maybe still the case). Guys with no women would together in a pub until 11pm when pubs were forced to close then. With a belly full of beer they would head for a club/disco hunting for women. Usually the men outnumbered the women so fights often broke out inside or outside the club. Elton was just writing what was going on.

I remember a friend had an extra ticket to an Elton concert. I reluctantly helped him out by going thinking "this is going to be boring". Easily one of the best concerts I ever seen! Everyone knew every word to every song he played! He did some really soulful versions of his more commercial stuff that made you rethink everything you thought of his radio stuff. Awesome talent.

Taupin has said It was inspired by his raucous teenage days and in particular, the fistfights in his local pub, the Aston Arms in Market Rasen. Ironically in my area the song quite often played at a disco, pub to trigger a fight between Town A and Town B you always knew it was time to get out of the way before it kicked off. one night, I ended up not getting out of the way quick enough when I got outside something warm was trickling down my arm, I had been cut by something it required three stiches I never wanted to get involved in that stuff. but still ended up getting hurt.
