You know what I really love about this game? It feels just like I'm playing old MKs on my SNES again. Everything you loved about it, the gameplay, artstyle, even the voilence, its all there in its classical form... only better. Improved, as you'd expect from a sequel. What more can a fan ask for?
Slips is an old school original Tekken Tag legend... he was definitely the best MK9 Scorpion main who ever played the game. He created the vortex that you see being used here.
There are unbreakable combos with quite a few characters, meter can be saved for breakers or used for armour, frame traps, to discourage zoning etc so it’s hardly just to save noobs from being punished. It also allows you to escape things that might otherwise ruin the game like cyrax and jax's 100% resets, cages pressure etc. Both players have it so no one gets an advantage and good meter managment is a skill and adds more depth to the game.
Actually most people refer to Scorpion as a lag tier character. Input delay means if you try to dash block you'll get hit by the spear, its harder to react to the teleport, etc.
Thank you for the reply! That makes sense to me. I am primarily a Smash Melee player, and the button configurations cannot be changed, so it was kind of a new thing for me to see. Thanks again!
In fluid dynamics, a vortex is a region within a fluid where the flow is mostly a spinning motion about an imaginary axis, straight or curved. or if you mean on the game it is when scorpion ends a combo with the opponant standing leaving him enough time to do an overhead or low attack before the opponant can move, the opponant has to guess and block high or low (They cant move or attack) so he has a 50/50 chance at going into another combo into another 50/50 chance at another combo and so on.
His teleport has such ridiculous invulnerability on wakeup he doesn't have to worry about pressure. He does 70% damage 1 meter. Period. Command grab is the best mixup in the game.
Elbow dash is -15 on block so if your kung Lao for example you have 21 spin into a combo, the 21 is 7 frames start up so you have a 8 frame window to see the dash and full combo punish. Laos teleport is a little trickier to punish as there is a little guessing game.
A protective covering used to prevent damage from being inflicted to... sorry when you do certain special moves you can press R2 or RT to add armour and if your opponant hits you the armour absorbes the hit and your move still comes out and causes damage. Most armour only takes one hit but some super armour can absorb any amount of hits for the whole duration of the move so you can blast through projectiles or out of pressure. The person using the armour still takes damage from the absorbed hit.
the dive kick chase pressure was what impressed me most about PL's kung lao, though I'm not a mk player so I dont really know too much if that was changed or not
They do button checks because you can change the button layouts in the options menu and during a match and on the character select screen so you just need to make sure the person before you didn’t change the buttons. People have lost games because they didn’t check. I play other fighters so I am not sure why they don’t do as many button checks. Maybe they can’t change the layouts on the game or they know no one changes their buttons.
For example cage can do standing 1 dash 2 dash 2 dash 2 dash 44 nut punch. Some people also like to walk or dash forward when Kung teleports and then do a special in the other direction. For example kenshi can walk forward so Lou’s attack misses and then do a shoulder charge the other way or just use armour but that’s obviously not a full combo. In a kung mirror you can just spin on reaction for a full combo.
@thefireedc also the reason he is doing the lower % combos is because it leaves him in a situation where he can do a 50/50, if he guesses right he does another combo and another 50/50
After the teliport he can move back and let your attack miss or jump over your sweep and get chip and build meter. The raidens you play online will not be timing their inputs perfectly after teliporting, if raiden teliports and does a low front kick its very hard for you to do anything but block. Once you start blocking it he can attack or throw. If you try to jump he can react for a punish. It also gets him out of frame traps and keeps you on edge waiting for it. Duck punch is punishable.
I'm not talking about his reset chance, You can use his blackhole as a Shang Tsung fireball mixup to force the opponent into the air at any time to AA them. Sindel has godlike pressure and significant zoning, if Shang Tsung is a high tier, so is Sindel.
Exactly, you can also do subzeros F4 overhead for a mix up between that and D4 or Slide. This is a bad risk reward because i think the combo is only around 30% and slide is a full combo punish with very little reward but it could be used to win the round if your opponant has very little life and you have a breaker to stop them punishing. Also 21 is a little better than 22 as a follow up, has better recovery so you can stop and continue pressure after or finish with 2 or 4 if they try to interupt
Thats one thing I like about MK9 the most balanced game out low tier players like scropian and sub zero can do some serious damage if you play smart. People say sub zero sucks because he's slow but he's a counter player his defense is top tier and so is his corner pressure. Just because you can't button smash or spam attack damage ppl say he's crap but he's really good. He has a 44% mid screen combo most players dont even know exists. it goes JP1,2,2,4, ex freeze, dash, B1,2,2,1,2, ex slide.
Can someone explain to me why button checks happen in this game? I have seen other fighting game tournament matches and have yet to see button checks other than in MK9.
well you said the elbow dash can be countered and lou’s teleport can be uppercut, just wanted to clarify they both give a full combo unless your a slow character.
everyone apart from i think kenshi and sheeva can put kung lao into an air juggle before he even lands from his teliport using Down 1 (Down Square on ps3). The pushback on reptiles dash is a pain becuase some things wont reach him like you say but most characters have a move fast enough and with enough range to punish, Kungs 21 (Triangle, Square) will hit after a blocked elbow dash with pushback. You have given me an idea for a video, How to punish Kung Lao's Teliport with Every Character
i was excited to see a scorpion get so far, the character is low in the tiers and its hard to make it that far with somebody like him, if you think he's common to see then you play a little too much online
If Lao teleports and instant 3 as he is on the way up you have to duck without blocking then his attack will miss and on the way down you D1 into a combo. For example cage can do D1 F3 Nut punch. If Lao teleports and does a delayed 3 then that will beat your D1 so you have to do a standing attack as soon as you see the teleport.
Cyrax was a new undertaking for them with the bombs and they were overly ambitous which i think is a good thing. like i said, hes not dominating tournments because hes not overpowered even with the resets. Chi needs his rune trap as he is terrible without it, hes pretty terrible even with it. You must be joking about baraka, he is one of the worth charictors in the game, i have no experiance playing quan vs barakka but i have played both of them seperatly and i would give quan the edge.
Thanks Slips you Opened my eyes I most surely never thought that anyone could give 49% on Scorpian atleast. Good job perfect legend but I guess Slips is much better becoz I always thought Scorpian was never a better character.
You just have to read when its coming, block or let it whiff and full combo punish. He has no high damage 50/50's so your fine to just sit there blocking and wait for him to mess up if he is abusing the spin. Most characters full grounded punishes do more damage than kung lao’s combo from a random spin.
if you mean at the end of a combo, F21 Teliport all links, 11 Teliport does not, even if the 11 hits the teliport can still be blocked. If you mean at the start of a combo then im not sure because i dont play scorpion much but i would imagine it is because the F21 hits mid and 11 hits high then mid so people can uppercut, D1 or D3 you out of 11. F21 is almost twice as slow as 11 though so im not reli sure
@thefireedc Anyone can do combos, its not being able to do combos that wins games, its managing to land the combos when your opponent has good spacing, you cant just jump at people offline
I really wanted Scorpion to win but I like that he versed raiden and lost because I now know that scorpion is really bad when versing raiden. I play scorpion in amateur tournaments so this was lots of help.
K13Good I play xbox so I hope this helps. Scorpion is a good rush character because of his X, x, x combo really does a lot of damage and even does a lot of chip damage. Following the X combo maybe do a sweep then a back, Y, back, back X is a pretty good combo. Try not to use the teleport too much because it is very punishable. Only teleport if you EX it (Using meter with the teleport) because that gives him an extra punch after the tele and he gains armor. Keep in mind that the sweep is really good for scorpion because that gives you many options in what combo you want to do. Sweep, forward X, X X X, Back Y, Back Back X, Back Y, Jump, Throw. That's the Easiest combo I know that does good damage.
navychief929 . what is chip damage? and sorry I meant people using him against me I can never beat them haha but maybe ill try him out. I just think he is really op :( so is noob imo... do you know any combos for cyrax/reptile/subzero/liu kang?
Chip damage is the damage done when the opponent is blocking your attacks. It usually does 1-2%. And about combos, just look up videos on them, there are tons.
@thefireedc These are both top players and it is easy to pick faults with other peoples game play when you are not playing. They played another set at this tourni before the finals and slips made PL change from kung lao to raiden so don't count him out. They are both playing very safe because they know the other will punish them for any small mistake
if you dont play the game then dont say stuff that you don't know about it, raiden's teleport is punishable, so if you know it's coming you can punish it, reptile is very slow the only fast thing about him is his elbow dash, which you can always block and counter, kung lao's teleport can be punished with an uppercut at the right momment (unless ex)
Slips looks like such a casual player, who does it for a laugh, that's why he's my fav guy. loved it when he beat Tom Brady. Tom just takes cocky gamer geek to a new level.
He used both in this tourni, kung lao wasent going so well for him against slips in pools (I have that match uploaded too). Since then he has switched back to mainly kung lao and kabal.
Instant air projectile is fast enough to beat every attempt Noob makes at a shadow except on wakeup, it also beats his teleport, and he cannot use a black hole. The instant air projectile is enough for her to win alone. Kabal's iap isn't as good as Kitana's, so it's more tilted in Saibot's favor. Ontop of that, Kitana's F2 and D1 reaches past any upshadow, so that removes his best defensive special, and she beats him with damage too, since his best midscreen combo is 20% no meter.
Your attempts at trolling are admirable. If infact you are serious, Cyrax does 56% 1 meter, or 100% 1 meter. Sektor does 52% 1 meter. Shang Tsung does 54% 1 meter. Ermac does 69% 3 meter, 45% anti-air no meter, or 52% no meter. Kung Lao does 55% 1 meter, or 74% 3 meter. Kratos does 100% 1 meter. Rain does 60% 1 meter. Skarlet does 76% 2 meter. Jade does 50% 3 meter. Going by damage, it may look-semi balanced (if you ignore Cyrax and Kratos), but it isn't just about damage.
damn forgot about the low jab, yeah i can see scorpion doing a low jab into a 11 spear or even a 111 spear, ill keep that in mind when i play online thanks :P and go for it aha id love to see it, what characters do you usually play as? im mostly good with sub zero, ermac, scorpion, reptile, kung, and liu
Only enhanced hellfire is guaranteed not regular and he doesn't want to spend a bar. He leaves them knocked down on purpose so they have to guess block between the back 2, forward 4 and throw that scorpion can do. Slips knows what he's doing...
I punish reptiles dash quite consistently online or at the very least commit them to blocking, taking a throw or pressure. There is time to see the dash animation and react, radians teleport is harder but still possible to get good advantage if you are baiting it. Yes kabal is broken but plenty of other characters win high level tournaments. On PS3 with a laggy monitor its too hard to punish cross overs but on vita i can easily punish them online, you can also make a read and NJP or use cage.
Not because he was good with him. Because he abused an advantage on hit move that loops. Not to say he wasn't good with him.He is. But in him finding the loop is what got it patched. And the fact that that won him the tournament.
Very true, it has to be overpowered though because it is pretty much the only good thing about him, without it he would be very low on the tier list if not at the bottom. Most of the rest of the cast have many more than one over powered move.
honestly, d-pad/controller is better for MK/Injustice games unless you want to do instant-jumping fireball or other projectile attacks, e.g., in which case you'd want a joystick. Joysticks are WAY too complicated for 4-button NR games (NetherRealm game company) and also cos the button layout for joysticks is usually too complex. Joysticks are better for 6-button fighting games like SF, but I HATE console joysticks cos they're HORRIBLE to learn how to use and I used to play SF games in the arcades before they mostly DIED. That's one of the BEST reasons for playing NR fighters: easier to play at home on console or online (if the games aren't too laggy online!) and cos I got tired of playing SF games FOREVER lol ;P
but reptile's elbow dash backs reptile up a bit on block and for lao's teleport, i don't see anything that can punish it because after the teleport all his attacks are high, which makes it only (effectively) possible to uppercut because you obviously cant go for a neutral jump punch to have a juggle so there isnt really a way, unless you play with some weird character lol i don't know them all maybe someone with a low hit juggle? like melinna perhaps? idk :P
yh, scorp can do D1 dash D1 Teliport, 11 spear, jump over punch, F24 Teliport then get a free jump over into his 50/50 vortex. I have a combo video with ermacs highest combos but don't play him much, my main at the start was subzero but now i main kung lao and cage. I also like liu kang, jax and raiden.
how long has it been since you played online?, because in my experience it take longer for raiden to do anything after the teleport than it takes me(depending on your character), I just duck and either punch or sweep witch makes his teleport kinda pointless imo unless to get out of an enemy combo or sumtin, but then again that's just my opinion
Please what? Sheeva is one of the best characters in game regardless of what people say. Sheeva, Johnny Cage, and Cyber Sub are the three I use the most.
yeah i know, and believe me i'm a huge Tekken fan, but Evo 2011 was a shame, only Bob, Law and Miguel players, no character variety at all, and the Finals, the F*cking Grand Finals guess who the finalists are, you got it right, Bob vs Bob.
But, honestly unless you're a pro, you won't do that by instinct, and if you play against a pro they won't let you react in time, and any player has some experience to know that you should wait for an opponent to attack, teleport, follow up, and repeat the process.
Well, Cyrax is a complicated character to learn. Most of his combos rely on juggles, and juggles rely on expert timing, so it isn't easy to use him at first. Guess that would count as a disadvantage?
Oh and another thing, I tested the F21 compared to a regular 11 and it seems to be the same exact damage? Do people use the F21 just because it's flashy? Because the 11 into a teleport has the same damage and 50/50 vortex ending. Ermac is a fucking beast haha I love playing as him, as a jump in punch = a 45% damage combo with no meter :P
I agree to some extent on what you said but saying subzero and scorpion isnt great is just being ignorant, every character is great as long as you know hpw to play them the correct way.
PL exposing some of lao's bullshit did get him patched at the time, but i think he would have been patched later on anyway because his spin was safer and combos did too much damage as well as the loop. Can't just blame it on the loop because cage has far worse frame traps where theres not even a 50/50 guessing game and it was decided he needs those to make up for how poor his zoning is.
Sorry but your wrong about that one, Raiden's teleport is hard to punish but it is fully punishable before he can block or move. At the least if your waiting for it you should get free pressure
You know what I really love about this game? It feels just like I'm playing old MKs on my SNES again. Everything you loved about it, the gameplay, artstyle, even the voilence, its all there in its classical form... only better. Improved, as you'd expect from a sequel. What more can a fan ask for?
this is probaly the best scropion that i have seen on youtube
Slips is an old school original Tekken Tag legend... he was definitely the best MK9 Scorpion main who ever played the game. He created the vortex that you see being used here.
I am impressed at how the game utilizes Raiden for real teleport animation. It's awesome. He just dominates the entire field.
Both players have it so no one gets an advantage and good meter managment is a skill and adds more depth to the game.
i am really happy to see scorpion alive and kicking. tournaments need variety of characters.
It is rare to see someone who can play Raiden very well.
idc how it ended its good to see someone other than kabal and kung lao even get close to grand finals. good game slips for being different
Actually most people refer to Scorpion as a lag tier character. Input delay means if you try to dash block you'll get hit by the spear, its harder to react to the teleport, etc.
scorpion is underpowered way too slow.
Perfec legend is awesome. Never saw before anyone plays as Raiden so good.
I glad to see characters like Scorpion, Striker, Mileena, Jax and other in tourneys, but it happens not often, as u see
I swear man delriach is the best commentator, he should comment every tournament!!!
Thank you for the reply! That makes sense to me. I am primarily a Smash Melee player, and the button configurations cannot be changed, so it was kind of a new thing for me to see. Thanks again!
That fucking scorpian juggle was the coolest shit ive evwr seen scorpian do
Respect for Scorpion!!!

yes but not since this match was recorded, this is after the patch. They gave it a few extra recovery frames.
His teleport has such ridiculous invulnerability on wakeup he doesn't have to worry about pressure. He does 70% damage 1 meter. Period. Command grab is the best mixup in the game.
Great video you guys have the best audio for these tournaments

They do button checks because you can change the button layouts in the options menu and during a match and on the character select screen so you just need to make sure the person before you didn’t change the buttons. People have lost games because they didn’t check. I play other fighters so I am not sure why they don’t do as many button checks. Pl plays both Raiden and Kung Lao so well. And now he's training with kabal. Can't wait to see what he does with him

all he had to do was teleport when raiden did. not all the time but atleast throw it in the mix and get it respected.
PL has a calm, professional disposition here...i like that
well you said the elbow dash can be countered and lou’s teleport can be uppercut, just wanted to clarify they both give a full combo unless your a slow character.

The good ones explain the mind-games to casual players and new comers to help them follow why the players make certain decisions.
And the fact that that won him the tournament.
how do u do the kick teleport in mid air
Very true, it has to be overpowered though because it is pretty much the only good thing about him, without it he would be very low on the tier list if not at the bottom. Most of the rest of the cast have many more than one over powered move.
how is better to play with the or the joystick...which one allows you to be faster and doing better combos?
honestly, d-pad/controller is better for MK/Injustice games unless you want to do instant-jumping fireball or other projectile attacks, e.g., in which case you'd want a joystick. That's one of the BEST reasons for playing NR fighters: easier to play at home on console or online (if the games aren't too laggy online!) and cos I got tired of playing SF games FOREVER lol ;P
how can u teleport with reptile? give me the input so I can improve my level with him
but reptile's elbow dash backs reptile up a bit on block and for lao's teleport, i don't see anything that can punish it because after the teleport all his attacks are high, which makes it only (effectively) possible to uppercut because you obviously cant go for a neutral jump punch to have a juggle so there isnt really a way, unless you play with some weird character lol i don't know them all maybe someone with a low hit juggle? like melinna perhaps? idk :P
Did they ever find Bob Washington?
yh, scorp can do D1 dash D1 Teliport, 11 spear, jump over punch, F24 Teliport then get a free jump over into his 50/50 vortex. I have a combo video with ermacs highest combos but don't play him much, my main at the start was subzero but now i main kung lao and cage. I also like liu kang, jax and raiden.
Oh, I see. Scorpion has advantage to act then. I use Sub-zero's back1 2 1 sorta like what you mentioned. I usually go for a throw or a 2 2 string.
which one was perfect legend? white or black left or right
how long has it been since you played online?, because in my experience it take longer for raiden to do anything after the teleport than it takes me(depending on your character), I just duck and either punch or sweep witch makes his teleport kinda pointless imo unless to get out of an enemy combo or sumtin, but then again that's just my opinion
Perfect Legend é muito viciado... mas esse scorpion manja muito também
Perfect legend is such a move user of that superman flying thingy
Well its a fantastic move and its a tournament, so no reason to not use it
Mista Jerka he uses it too much doe
LJ oh ok
tbh, i'd like to see perfect legend play with a character that doesn't have a really good teleport. then i'll know if he is really good or not.
I wonder how much pressure having a sponsor is?
Well, Cyrax is a complicated character to learn. Most of his combos rely on juggles, and juggles rely on expert timing, so it isn't easy to use him at first. Guess that would count as a disadvantage?
Oh and another thing, I tested the F21 compared to a regular 11 and it seems to be the same exact damage? Do people use the F21 just because it's flashy? Because the 11 into a teleport has the same damage and 50/50 vortex ending. Ermac is a fucking beast haha I love playing as him, as a jump in punch = a 45% damage combo with no meter :P
@Videos187x that's because slipkicks was being free af
He took a break after KL got nerfed to reassess his game and rebuild his characters.
So Capcom would say it's too violent and make the whole game like MK vs DC?
Is that a rancor in the background?
I agree to some extent on what you said but saying subzero and scorpion isnt great is just being ignorant, every character is great as long as you know hpw to play them the correct way.
I main Shang Tsung son, I've seen Cyrax players teleport out of F4 GS. Cyrax is virtually immune to pressure.
Ok, let's end this, Raiden's teleport is overpowered but has it's downfalls, so unless you really know how to spam teleports, it's overpowered.
Good job Carl Anthony White aka Perfect Legend.
Way to take home another tournament
Holy shit this is the best Radien player I've ever seen
have they nerfed raiden's teleport
More respect to Slips for Scorpion.
Bruh when I heard guilty gear team sign ups I got hyped. I have to see that shit.
Where art thou, Bob Washington?
so whats "armor"??
congrats to PL good game to slips too though using scorpion is really difficult at this level of play
Sorry but your wrong about that one, Raiden's teleport is hard to punish but it is fully punishable before he can block or move. At the least if your waiting for it you should get free pressure
Whats a "vortex"?
did i hear kobayashi in the background?
Raiden's teleport is only OP online, where you cannot punish it.
