Continuing to produce chips is essential for enabling countries to respond appropriately and promptly during economic recovery. This was Taiwan’s contribution to the world during the Covid-19 pandemic and remains so even today. While many people may criticize her for favoring the semiconductor industry, it is precisely because of her correct decisions that many industries around the world have been able to maintain normal operations or recover, ensuring the smooth functioning of sectors like medical equipment and communication technology.

Taiwan (台湾 or 대만) has shown the most remarkable performance among small economies. Of course, they have the disadvantage of being over-reliant on one industry 'semiconductors,' but one thing is certain: their growth rate has been higher than that of advanced Asia's big economies such as Japan and South Korea.
Tsai was very pragmatic as a leader who respected all sides of the political spectrum. She did nothing out of the ordinary policy wise, but being a decent and caring human being who put the people ahead of her ego, she will be fondly remembered as a very effective first female Asian leader.
In addition to Tsai Ing-wen's excellent economic performance, the most important thing is to let the world know Taiwan better. Most people of our generation will be grateful to Taiwan's first outstanding female president.

Raising minimum wages in my opinion isn't all good. Raising minimum wages can easily increase inflation making the middle class harder to maintain their quality of living. In Taiwan, their is a big problem, which we call it the M-shaped society. The M-shaped society, means that the rich persons are getting richer, while the middle class are getting poorer, one of the reasons is that minimum wages rises too fast causing the cost of production rising too fast, which causes the price of living goods increased faster than the salary of the middle class. And this made the middle class harder to pay their living cost and become poor relatively.

Very good analysis out there. I do have two points to add up here. First is check the GDP in domestic currency term and you will find out the GDP growth was tremendous over the period. The total GDP in 2017 was something around 17 trillion NT$, and was more than 23 trillion NTD when she left, the local currency NT$ was dragged downward by CNH and JPY since 2022 which may have mudded the water. Second is Taiwan is actually one of the few countries enjoying trade surplus against China, the great trading volume is Taiwanese companies buying industrial materials like chips being assembled into industrial goods in China, in my opinion this would be the weakness for Taiwan for the coming years as like you have mentioned in the video, companies are having difficult time on retreating from or simply amortizing their investments in China.
Agree. She allowed the world to see Taiwan's economic development, multiculturalism, and people's strong defense of sovereignty. Even if China invades with force, violates the international order, and suppresses Taiwan, many countries not only condemn China, but in addition to imposing economic sanctions on China, they also stand up to form an alliance with Taiwan. Let me know how valuable democracy is. Democracy vs autocracy
She is a controversial figure. Under her government, Taiwan’s economy performed well. However, her policy and weak retaliation against China and other foreign countries, including some of the western countries, which undermine our sovereignty, are strongly criticized in Taiwan. Her military policy is also questionable. Although she initiated many programs during her presidency, few have prominent impact on strengthening our national defense capabilities against the invasion of China. Still, she is better than her opponents.
I strongly disagree. During Tsai Ing-wen's tenure, the distribution of wealth in Taiwan is highly imbalanced. Most of the wealth created is held by business owners and shareholders, leaving employees with minimal benefits. Consequently, Tsai Ing-wen has greatly worsened economic inequality in Taiwan.

The correct is " The exiled regime of the Republic of China" in Taiwan. It's not "ROC Taiwan" and It's a non-sense name. The Republic of China does not have "territorial sovereignty over Taiwan and Penghu." People should study the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki and the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty. Tsai Ing-wen is the President of the Republic of China in exile. Now she stepped down, keeps promoting how great she is. How great of her GDP during her administration. I think Taiwan's success is largely due to China mainland. They're basically the same people, so there is no cultural barrier, and Taiwan comoanies and products can easily plug into mainland's market. Taiwan basically has privileged access to the Chinese market where other international brands struggle. Tsai's strategy to distance from the mainland may have actually hindered Taiwan's economy, because she blocked many business opportunities with the mainland, or mainland blocked it because of her. On the other hand, she came to power by playing the communist fear card, so she could not have acted otherwise.
@@jengoh3826It could have been waaaay better if Tsai had just left things as they were with China mainland. Investments, tourism, sales, everything was booming, on both sides, and then she arrived. Taiwan's economy still grew, Taiwanese are seasoned businessmen, so they navigated the situation, but it's just a fraction of the potential, and a lot of the niche that the Taiwanese businesses left after Tsai came to power were filled by the locals. A lot of Taiwanese don't know, because they've never set foot in the mainland, but there was a strong Taiwanese presence along all the mainland's coast.
@ I’m Taiwanese. Our family did business in China until Covid happened. I know what I’m talking about. Nothing good came out of economic integration with China. We don’t care much for Chinese tourists. They don’t even contribute to the Taiwanese economy. Korean and Japanese tourists are very much welcomed and they have been coming in large numbers. I see them everyday here in Taipei. They r literally everywhere in Taipei nowadays which really surprised me. Investments actually boomed when we disengaged ourselves from China because Taiwanese investors came back to Taiwan and build factories here. The last I heard, there are no longer enough land for new factories. The DPP is not being blamed for disengagement from China today. Rather they are blamed for not keeping up with the infrastructure development needed to make more land available for new factories in Taiwan. If you really need to find a reason to blame Tsai, you will be more persuasive by pointing to the slow infrastructure development instead.

Get out!

Actually. The economy did well when Taiwan began to distance herself from China lol.
