NEW INSTRUMENT FILMS: Hi everyone! We’re about to embark on making some new instrument films and we want to hear from you! What instruments do you want to see covered? Reply within the next week! Thanks for watching!
**** Absolutely wonderful that someone is doing 'intros' for the variety of musical instruments..... It's sad that very few people are aware of many of even the typically used orchestral ones.... Please keep doing this.
As a lover of classical music and beginner in the world of composition, this video series is absolutely wonderful. Thank you for sharing these with the world and helping all understand these instruments deeper.
Just ordered a violin and looking forward to getting to grips with it. I love your videos, they're very informative and show a great insight into orchestral music.
Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Hi, I would just like to know if the orchestra would consider making a video on the Alto Clarinet. It's is a wonderful instrument that it highly underestimated and there are not many resources for the instrument on UA-cam. I'm sure that many people would appreciate it. Thank you!
We have a new instrument film - EUPHONIUM - coming out on 23 Feb 2018 - make sure you subscribe to be the first to see it! TRAILER: ua-cam.com/video/U1nNyGLD170/v-deo.html
Get involved in our #popupplanets! We want to see you playing your favourite extract of Holst's The Planets and you have a chance to win a pair of tickets to our concert in London on Saturday 1 Oct: ua-cam.com/video/9UY29P2CW1o/v-deo.html
After playing the Guitar since 2008, i was searching for an new instrument for me to discover, and than i found the violin, and have to say that your videos are very interesting and well explained, good job! :D
Timothy Lee yes, the struggle of violin. After 1 year you no longer sound like a dying cat scraping its nails on a chalkboard, you just sound like a dying cat. lol.
I prefer playing the second violin part in my orchestra class. Not because it's easier than first violin, it's because I love to play a more harmonious part. Also because we don't have many seconds in my class. We don't have chairs yet but I sit in first chair because on the first day I had the class ( I have orchestra on B days so we started on the second day of school )no one wanted to sit in the second violin section and everyone wanted to sit near the back. We did playing test recently to see which section we are in ( second or first ) and what chair we are in.
I dont play the violin but the viola. my sis plays the violin and sometimes I play it. I love the sound but I hate when it gets too high (hurts my ears). still love it though
does anyone notice he's holding an object with the other two fingers and so uses the nearest available finger to point with, the middle one, what is wrong with you people.
I'm planning on making orchestral arrangements of songs from games I used to play as a kid. So these videos help a lot for picking the right instrument. I'm starting with the game Terranigma. Check out some of the music. It's great :D
I am a young violinist in Turkey,so thank you for this video."The Orchestra" is the best app I've ever seen. But It is not on Google Play,so I cannot use It.Please let us use in Google Play!
1. Generally they follow their section leader, eg a brass section would listen to their principal player. The principal violinist leads the orchestra in general however. 2. People are generally watching the conductor, and the principal in each section tends to pass on the message where there's something specific. That's just my orchestra though, I don't know if that's a general thing.
Justine Franklin, there are many subtle differences between the two instruments. Size, pitch, timbre and their uses in orchestral music are a few of them. Check out our instrument guide to the viola and all will become clear - ua-cam.com/video/XierDLeUiYg/v-deo.html
Hi Javier, We don't have a saxophone member of the orchestra, but we'll keep this in mind for the future. There are some pretty great saxophone solos in the orchestral repertoire.
Dear Zsolt-Tihamer Visontay, my name is Dmitry Timofeev. I am a Russian composer. I really need your help. I couldn't find your email address anywhere. That's why I decided to write here. You recorded examples of violin sounds, and among these samples there is a sound - a natural harmonic "d#7". How did you get this harmonic? Have you tuned your violin a tone higher? And is this the harmonic "c#7" on the second string (sul A)? Or is it half-pressed on the first string (sul E) in normal tuning? And if so, how stable is this harmonic? It is very important for me. I would be very grateful if you take the time to answer my question! Sincerely, Dmitry Timofeev
Would it be possible to pick up the violin at 17 and play in an orchestra in years to come? Granted I have a grade 3 in music theory and I've always had very good muscle memory and use of my hands..
If you are comitted, put in the practice, I see no reason why not, though you might have to put in a lot of work, given that your peers will have a headstart, but it's never too late to start!
Nice, go for it! I started a couple of months ago! I absolutely love it. I try to practise 30minutes a day. I think it's important to get a teacher to show you the right posture/technique, that helped alot for me. I am a guitarist and singer as well, and I must say experience in music, especially having ear for pitch is a head start, but that is something you can develop!
Johnny Bruce Muller I hope you become great! I've been playing for six years now and it's always funny seeing comments about just starting the violin cuz it makes me feel like I'm good lol
startrekwarsmixguy Theguitarwhiz It is absolutely never too late to start. My Grandmother began playing the bass fiddle when she was 60, and played in our city's Orchestra until her death, rip. But yeah, that's not about me nor her, that's about you. You absolutely can with the right devotion.
+Lindsey Arpin Well, that depends on the quality of the violin in question but like other stringed instruments, you gotta tune everyday, sometimes more than once.
Love love the violin ever since I was a child. Question! Is it possible to learn to play the violin when an adult?! When buying a violin, what are key things to look for, what are the differences in variety, or best for a beginner? I am also going to take classes if I get one, but I do want to practice at home as well!
I dont know if j want ana answer from them, but I hav see one for you! I dont play violin but I know much about it. Question 1. Its never too late to learn a new instrument! There are many great teachers out there for adults. Question 2. When buying a violin, dont just go tk a store and pick one. Look up music stores u know about and look for ratings and reviews.Look for one that has different colors on the end of each string. & mostly for a beginner would be best. Hope I helped!
Tris1014 Thanks so much for your reply! That's ok, I understood what you wrote. :D I will look for reviews then now. I was already planning a music store ...
Things I learned in fourth grade. Which was ages ago. Shout out to Professor David Dirks, PHD. If you see this, Edith Cavell was never the same without you.

Wow! That’s cool how you can do many things and create differnt effects with the violin
I’m actually thinking about learning to play the violin and this video helped me get some insight on how it works. Thank you!

Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) Stay _tuned_? Was that a sly musical reference?
Maybe, but probably pun non intended
Haha. No pun intended, but yes, it's a good one!
Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay is such a great player. Great to see him chatting about the violin and his work.
Buen video para introducir el violín. :)

How do I learn to play it
I got 2 questions:
1. Is it all of the orchestra that follows you, or only the violins?
2. If the are watching you, who is watching the maestro?
1. Generally they follow their section leader, eg a brass section would listen to their principal player. The principal violinist leads the orchestra in general however.

How common are the pieces that require violin subharmonics to be used?
Is violin primarily a melody instrument?
Either the A and E strings are really sharp or the G and D are really flat.
Why are there many more violins than other string instruments in an orchestra?
It's because that's the real deal
