  • "I've Been to the Mountaintop" is the last speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr.
King spoke on April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters) in Memphis, Tennessee. On the following day, King was assassinated.
The speech primarily concerns the Memphis Sanitation Strike. King calls for unity, economic actions, boycotts, and nonviolent protest, while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. At the end of the speech, he discusses the possibility of an untimely death.

I like to think he really did speak to God. And was told that he was going to be killed. But if he was brave and stood tall he would be welcome into heaven and his legacy and impact would affect millions to come. I like to think he knew and wasnt scared, knowing it was god's plan.

This gives me the chills. When he says God has allowed him to go up to the mountain and that he has seen the promised land but may not get to there with us. He knew he was going to die but knew he would be in glory with the Lord. What a man of God he was.

He was serious. The blacks are the Hebrews of the Bible and God is coming to deliver them one last time from slavery and the land of their captivity. IMO...This is simply the greatest speech of all time. It seems eternal...spiritual...timeless. This speech will be heard by children many generations from now. The battle for freedom and liberty will never end. It's up to us to tell the lessons of history to our kids and pass the torch of freedom and liberty to them. No matter what color, no matter what creed, no matter where you live. This man fell on the sword of freedom so that we could have it. God bless.

“Mine eyes have seen coming of Lord!”
Is possibly what makes this one of the best speeches in American History.
This whole speech is brilliantly framed within the heart of the American project and purpose. And to end it with the opening line of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a song about the Union’s sacred mission, with later lines like: “as [Jesus] died to make men holy, let us die to make men free”
Absolute masterclass in tying religious metaphors like deliverance, with the very core of the goal of the American national purpose.

All we say to America is, "Be true to what you said on paper." If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand some of these illegal injunctions. Maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic first amendment privileges because they had not committed themselves to that over there.
But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech.
Somewhere I read of the freedom Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for rights. And so just as I say, we aren't going to let dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren't going to let any injunction turn us around...
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind.
Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!
    And so I'm happy, tonight.
    I'm not worried about anything.
    I'm not fearing any man.

😢 He was not fearless exactly 💯 but I do know what you mean when you say he was.
He was conquering the fear we all naturally have. He spoke to fear in this speech and basically was telling it I'm coming through you!
He decided 'DESPITE' FEAR DANGER RACISM, EVIL & IGNORANT PEOPLE & THEIR MANY PLOTS against his life he still preached on, marched on, ran on, towards the high mark of his calling, vision & goals.
Martin Luther King was on an assignment from his heavenly father and he knew that when he left this world he would be with him.
He understood he had one life to give. He stated that he would die for his people to have equality and a better life in a previous speech 💬. I just hate that there were cruel racist cowards that took him up on the offer and used a sniper hidden in the building like the dirty rat 🐀 he was to aim at and unarmed man and murder him in cold 🥶 🩸 blood. Then blame James Earl Ray - now that's real 😨 fear
      And how inhumane!
We all are here on my assignment. Martin Luther King aced his, like so many times he skipped grades and 🎓 graduated HS early - he skipped old age/ more time on earth 🌍 to a new assignment with God. 😊

I watch this every MLK day. Amongst other thoughts and emotions, one that arises every year is that look in his eyes that indicates his mind is elsewhere, and on some heavy thing. And yet he presses on, and gives the speech he know will be helpful to his cause. The phonetics of "but it really don't matter with me now", and the ensuing comments, are incredibly moving. The prediction, message, and timing of this are tragic, and I agree with other comments that this is one of the best segments of any speech I've ever seen.

This speech, being MLK's last one, always haunts me. I think he knew he didn't have long for this world. He says he had "been to the Mountaintop!" Whether it was the KKK or the CIA or a conspiracy of both, sadly, MLK knew his words were "dangerous." He sadly knew his life was at risk before that fateful day at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. But he kept on with his speech, and he was as strong willed as ever.
Sadly, Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't "get there with us." But spiritually, he did. His story has more or less left a big impact on my life, living in Atlanta now (the place of his birth) and having lived in Memphis were he was sadly gunned down.
MLK stood for what he believed was right, even if it cost him his life.

No we are not, dont disrespect all that fought to get to where we are today with your bullshit. This man was fighting for legitimate rights, legally, everyone is equal today because of what he fought for.

That’s because you haven’t returned to the LORD. You seek rights from your enemies instead of coming back to the LORD our God and acknowledging the error of our ways. We are in this position because we sinned against Him. Now if we hope to be free we must remember we are the people of God’s choice. We are the chosen, the nation of Israel. We must keep His laws and return to the Israelite Nation that he has risen in these Last Days which is The Israelite Church of God in Jesus Christ.

He was a man, just like you just like me. The greatness he attained is available to each and every one of us. This is the promise he died for that each and every one of us would have the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

This speech was so powerful.Because it's ovious that Dr Martin Luther king knew that his time was coming really soon.He knew that he only had so much time to make a difference in the world. He was constantly getting all kinds of crazy calls and Death threats around this time. But even with all of that he still remain strong and he continued to follow God and obey the will of God for his life.

He was serious. The blacks are the Hebrews of the Bible and God is coming to deliver them one last time from slavery and the land of their captivity. Just as in the days of old, he destroyed Egypt to set his people free, God is doing it again. This is why they killed him. Like they killed Jesus their savior also.

For those wondering He is quoting Moses in the Bible who never made it into the promised land and in fact died before the Israelites made it in. But he went up the mountain and God allowed him to see the promised land and therefore give him peace in knowing the Israelites will make it.

I am convinced that he went to the mountaintop, and God show him something. it could’ve been that He was going to died the following day. but in any case, dr king did know something was going to happened, the Spirit of the Lord was on him. that passion in his speech tells you that he saw something. what a beautiful man. like many others whom i would like to meet in heaven, along with my parents, Martin Luther is one of them.
