Are they deer resistant? Beautiful ! I planted one this past fall but it didn’t produce a lot of flowers . Not sure if the deer or squirrel had been nibbling at it

We try not to use this term because if the deer population is high and the pressure for food is high, a starving deer will try even the most unpalatable of plants (that's why you will often see us use the tern "not preferred by deer").
According to our friends at Rutgers University, Clematis is susceptible to attack, but because clematis plants are usually planted in areas close to high human proximity i.e. the walls of a home, they tend to escape a little better. and because they are usually growing on trellis, arbors, fences etc. it is easy to attach deterrents like fabric soften strips, bars of scented soap, fishing line or netting etc. Planting clematis in the Fall is an excellent idea (its our favorite time for planting most trees and shrubs). But, it will take a little while for your new plant to settle in, get established before it get going. You should see a big difference this spring.
