I live in the mountains of North Carolina, and grew up about 20 minutes from the Land of Oz amusement park on Beech Mountain, NC. It isn’t abandoned (no matter what the internet says). It opened in June of 1970, and Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher were both at the ribbon cutting. At the time, the park was a big deal. Unfortunately several things happened: several of the shops caught fire, an original Dorothy dress (purchased from the MGM auction) and other (not sure what) collectibles were stolen, and other things caused the park to shut down. I think some time in the late 90s it was re-opened for one weekend a year (in October, and it’s frigid on top of that mountain). The last few years they open several weekends in the summer. Thank you for all of your hard work and keeping the history alive. I really appreciate all you have done and continue to do.
Who else feels Scott has a superb speaking voice & would make a great game show host. Possibly replace Alex Trebek on Jeopardy. Scott is easy on the eye too.
Years ago I got to spend some time with Alan Parsons who was the recording engineer for the album Dark Side Of The Moon, and I asked him directly about the Wizard Of Oz connection. He told me that there was no connection to the film.
Well it worked out really well for them - I remember myself and my boyfriend at the time scrambling to find a VHD copy of the Wizard of Oz and it put Dark side of the Moon back on the charts.
I saw Ray Bolger on stage at The Sands Hotel, Vegas. I remember him singing and dancing to “Off to See the Wizard.” The audience swooned and we were royally entertained. I think I was about nine-years old. (1953-54)
I know this video is 6 months old, but as of June 21st, 2021, its been reported that the La Bianca house has been sold recently for $1.875mill. As far as I know, the identity of the buyers hasn't been disclosed publicly, but I read a statement from a real estate agent involved that they DO NOT intend to have the house demolished, instead they plan to remodel and furnish it. No guarantees of course, they could change their minds, or it could be that they only said that to prevent any public outrage that might result if they knew it was going to be demolished, but I just thought I'd include this update, just in case anybody is interested.
The Pink Floyd / Wizard of Oz connection was the very first thing I looked up when I got my first iMac in 2000 ! The fact of the matter is you can hook up ANY music with ANY movie -- like 50% of the time you willl get a "match". And 50% of the time it will not .
The Wizard of Oz Tornado Scene with Pink Floyd's 'The Great Gig in the Sky' (Dark Side of the Moon) playing is beyond words. The whole film with the album playing along is on youtube. Highly recommended.
I love that miniseries of Judy Garland starring Judy Davis she was absolutely brilliant, Tammy Blanchard played the young Judy Garland she was absolutely awesome. I recommend that to anybody.. one of the best miniseries I've ever watched!! I think it's on UA-cam.
The actress who played young Judy in "Me and My Shadows" was named Tammy Blanchard. Norma Shearer's brother, Douglas Shearer was a sound man at M-G-M. According to "Me and My Shadows", Judy's dad was gay as well. Harold Arlen and "Yip" Harburg wrote "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". The reclining board that actors would rest on if they could not sit is called a "Slant Board". My mother worked at Frito-Lay in Dallas and actually met Bert Lahr who, I guess, was doing a tour of the plant, since he advertised their product. She also met Joan Crawford, who was on the board of Pepsico, which owns/owned Frito/Lay. Mom said Joan was a lovely and friendly lady. I guess Toto had a better agent than the Munchkins! lol Obviously the beautiful Betty Lauren Bacall saw something sexy about Bogey. If you'll notice that early in the "Wizard of Oz" there was references to each character spoken by each of the ranch hands such as Bert Lahr's character telling Dorothy to have courage and stand up to that "Gulch" heifer, Dorothy refers to Miss Gulch as a "Wicked Old Witch", Jack Haley's character mentions that someday they'll build a statue honoring him and Ray Bolger's character tells Dorothy that her "head ain't made of straw, you know." Other actors who did commercials in the 70s was Vivian Vance doing coffee commercials for Maxwell House, Jane Withers as Josephine the Plumber advertising Comet Cleanser, Darla Hood did Chicken of the Sea tuna, The song where the person supposedly screams during a murder is on "Love Roller Coaster" by the Ohio Players.
Really great stuff, at the end you mentioned Star Wars knock offs, you can say that Star Wars could be a knock off of OZ....C3PO (tin man) Chewbacca (lion) R2D2 (Toto) Princess (Dorothy) and Obi Wan (Wizard) , all on a journey quest adventure. Great Scott ;-)
My mother was a huge fan of Judy. When I was a little girl she brought me to the Boston Common to see her in person. Once she showed up an hour late we almost got trampled to death from the crowd. Scary!
This is a great episode! You really covered the best of the Wizard Of Oz! I just was really impressed. I knew most of the information you talked about in bits and pieces, but you nailed it putting everything together. Scott, I think you are the best story teller in the world! Sounds exorbitant, but it's true! Thank you both for the trip through Oz, it was incredible! Jill Gross
I know this isnt related but I just saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and LOVED it. I am going to buy it after the new year. I loved the period piece of it and the ending. If only. . .
One of the pairs ruby slippers are literally down the road from me! have you ever heard of Newbridge cutlery or Newbridge silverware very famous they have an icon museum upstairs alot of movie memorabilia including Marilyn's famous red poke a dot umbrella, well ruby shoes there encased in glass box👌
Bennett Cerf of Random House (The same one on What’s My Line) gave Judy the recorder. He even paid her to talk to it....in hopes of a future autobiography.
Love the connection with Pink Floyd/Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Wizard of Oz! Very cool! Pink Floyd did that song for Syd Barret. Wicked cool about the Ruby Red Slippers.
I thoroughly enjoy listening to you both, when you kindly share with us your Hollywood knowledge, movie facts and interesting 'Stars' stories. If you ever decide to put any of this knowledge into book form, please let us know. Thanks again guys! You're my favourites 🇬🇧🎬 🇬🇧
Personal Story: In highschool we did a play THE RUNNER STUMBLES (it's based on a true story about a Nun murdered and the trial of the priest/lover. Movie has Dick Van Dyke and Beau Bridges, Maureen Stapleton). I totally didn't want the part I was given, I thought I deserved the lead (diva in me) being it was my last play in my senior year. We watched the movie and I found out Ray Bulger had my part, The Scarecrow.... I was alright with the part after that. Watch THE RUNNER STUMBLES
I like when you guys do the death of the week. I think putting it for the ones that pay isn't fair, there are some of us that love listening to you guys but can't afford to pay, so why do we get punished because we don't give money?
Uh, same reason that people who buy McLarens and filet mignon and live in Malibu or NYC penthouses get the things that they do because they can afford to pay...it's not punishment for not giving money...just because someone wants a thing but can't get that thing doesn't equate with punishment. Good grief the entitlement in our culture....there's lots of stuff that I love in the world, but I don't consider myself as being "punished" by virtue of the fact that someone doesn't just serve the stuff up to me for free. The guy has to make money to pay for a place to live, food to eat, etc, somehow. Sheesh.
Benjamin Keough's birthday is in October . The birthday party they were having was for his girlfriend and brother in law's birthday. That's when he died . Just thought I'd mention it.
I MYSELF LOVE THE TWILIGHT ZONE 😱 BUT OZ LAND IS ALWAYS MY FAVORITE PLACE ITS A CLASSIC , GREAT PODCAST LOVE U GUYS , SENDING LOVE N HUGS VIRTUALLY, ❤🙏🥰
I’m pretty sure Debbie Reynolds ended up with the Wizards jacket for her Hollywood costume museum. I could be wrong but I’m gonna go back and a UA-cam channel’s visit with her son.
I know what you mean about the Cecil Hotel. I am born and raised in LA and love it's history. I have read a couple books about the place and it is the only place in LA I would NEVER walk into.
I wanted to know if it was possible for you to do a Vlog on ABIGALE FOLGERS ,, i think it would be TRULY AN INTERESTING ONE,, Hopefully you will,,,,THAANK YOU Scott....
Every year they do exhibition Sharon tate was last one and I missed it, they had car from grease outside Olivia newton john was there pretty cool actually should look up would be plenty of photos
I wonder what happened to prof. Marvel's coat ? I really enjoyed this Podcast. I laughed and learned a lot. I'm so glad you mentioned Karl Slover I met him at Judy Garland Days. He had so many great stories about how it changed his life.
Benjamin didn't commit suicide on his birthday or any of his close family members' birthdays. Benjamin was born in October. Maybe he died on someone's birthday....but not his or his immediate family.
They recently found a 'lost' episode of Sesame Street where Margaret Hamilton played the wicked witch, apparently it was too scary for the kids so they never aired it. It was found just last year i believe.
One actor that has made a career in TV guest spots is Ed Beagley Jr. I’ve seen him on Better Call Saul, Hot in Cleveland, Grace and Frankie, every time I turn around he pops up again. 😉
Do you happen to know where the door that said, "Pigs" on it from Sharon and Roman's house ended up? I read that Trent R. had it for a while in his studio.
Did this Kent Warner live in Long Beach, Ca? In the late 1970's my bf at the time and his circle of friends were a gang of pretty brazen guys. We all use to hang out at the leader of the pack's house I'll call him Robbie for the sake of this comment. One night at Robbie's house, it was in the early evening Robbie closed down the party saying he was going to his friends house to see a pair of the ruby slippers his friend had "acquired" from the movie studio where he worked. Only a few of the gang members were allowed to go, the rest of us were dismissed home. The viewing was quite the talk of the house over the next couple of weeks. This friend was a local man near by in Long Beach some 40+ years ago. Just wondering? Love your videos.
The opening scene in "Easy Rider " was filmed at Ballarat. The next scene is selling the coke to none other than Phil Spector and the Rolls-Royce belonged to the Beatles. So in a lefthanded sort of way, there actually was a connection between the Beatles and Charles Manson 🤔 😳 😅 😬.

His voice and shows help me stay sober. Relaxes my brain
I've told Scott for quite a while how much I like his voice.🌹🌹🌹
He has a wonderful voice and should have his show on Netflix

I love the phrase, “He/She was a piece of work”. I used to hear it from my parents.

Over The Rainbow is my very fav song ever
The Wizard of Oz would have never been what it is today without Judy Garland singing "Over the Rainbow"
Absolutely kudos to you ty!

So much fun climbing into your heads for a couple of hours and learning about history :)

Hi. What a great episode and what a great expression "Blew my socks off!" I wonder where that expression comes from lol?
Great discussion/conversation! I enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.
Wonderful... My mom went to see the movie on opening day in Oregon...your stories were great to hear along with her stories I used to hear.
I love it when you guys double team!
My mother was a huge fan of Judy. When I was a little girl she brought me to the Boston Common to see her in person. Once she showed up an hour late we almost got trampled to death from the crowd. Scary!

Excellent video discussion on the Wizard Of Oz. Great job Scott and Michael.

Everything you do is magic. Greeting from Melbourne Australia x.
Scott please stay safe 😷😷😷 and keep the great videos coming👍👍👍👍
Read about the King of Siam incident. Evidently they had facial pacs on, and somewhere in Siam or Thailand there's these pictures...
I’m not a huge fan of Hollywood but I must admit the content and stories are fascinating.
just watched the woo (bluetooth restored) . a relative of mine was the tiny little ballerina of the lullaby league.
Bennett Cerf of Random House (The same one on What’s My Line) gave Judy the recorder. He even paid her to talk to it....in hopes of a future autobiography.
Certainly not the notorious curio it has become.
Have a safe and happy new year.
Love the connection with Pink Floyd/Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Wizard of Oz! Very cool! Pink Floyd did that song for Syd Barret. Wicked cool about the Ruby Red Slippers.
Thanks Scott
Awesome video!! Thank you Scott and mike!

Margaret Hamilton was a great advocate for Animal Rights.
I love Scott's take on Humphrey Bogart. "Who the HELL would want Humphrey Bogart? Who would say 'I want me some Humphrey Bogart '?" 😆😆
I loved this ! I need to watch the movie again. It was favorite movie from when I was little.
Is that a Zoltar Machine in the background of your house? How cool is that? Massive admiration for you guys. Applause. :-)

My grandfather had a lot of Frank L. Baum's book. Most were about the Oz thing, but Baum also wrote a strange one called The Stiry of Santa Claus.
Good one, I enjoyed watching. Thanks guys
Benjamin Keough's birthday is in October . The birthday party they were having was for his girlfriend and brother in law's birthday. That's when he died . Just thought I'd mention it.

They just found Dorothy's dress at a college on top of a shelf in the drama dept I believe. Its a miracle it was found in good condition.
I know what you mean about the Cecil Hotel. I am born and raised in LA and love it's history. I have read a couple books about the place and it is the only place in LA I would NEVER walk into.
What a story about the MGM costumes and I remember the stolen Red Slippers story...so sad these studios never understood history..
Great video

Veritable Font of Information 🤩
Not Only expanded on my knowledge but , learned so much , stopping to Google things thought-out
They recently found a 'lost' episode of Sesame Street where Margaret Hamilton played the wicked witch, apparently it was too scary for the kids so they never aired it. It was found just last year i believe.
I love “The Blue Bird” it was one of my favorites as a little kid. It’s a classic in my house.
Love Prick up your Ears! John also wrote a very early book about star stalking called Superstar? Pretty bizarre...
The Autograph is the name of the John Lahr book-amazing.
Tammy Blanchard played a young Judy in Me and My Shadows.
One actor that has made a career in TV guest spots is Ed Beagley Jr. I’ve seen him on Better Call Saul, Hot in Cleveland, Grace and Frankie, every time I turn around he pops up again. 😉
I saw the Jitterbug dance scene on the 50th anniversary VHS that came out in 1989. It was weird
Fabulous
NOT Hermione Gingold on Bewitched! Aunt Clara was portrayed by Marion Lorne.
Actually Liza sang "Somewhere over the rainbow" in 1960 on TV
Do you happen to know where the door that said, "Pigs" on it from Sharon and Roman's house ended up? I read that Trent R. had it for a while in his studio.

Didn't know Buddy Ebsen still appeared in Wizard of Oz as one of the soldiers. He was from my hometown, Belleville IL
This is fabulous...I just love the insight coming from Scott.
This Was Interesting!

well I enjoyed this.....anyone who can discuss Bewitched or its characters is Good in my book
If only they talked about the great Agnes Moorehead.
What is the name and author of the book about Rockhaven Sanitarium please?

Ya'll forgot to add that Margret Hamilton also starred in 13 ghosts!
These podcasts are great entertainment and very informative ….. unlike anything Hollyweird produces today which is total garbage 🗑.
Because of this podcast episode, I sat through - Under the Rainbow.. I know i was warned on how awful it was. But i didn't expect it to be that shoddy .
Why do you doubt the Baum goodwill story? I think someone found the Lion costume in the garbage and sold it for 3 million dollars.
