We end Season 7 with some slapstick as Laurel and Hardy yuk it up in their classic short Another Fine Mess. In our end of the year Megasode we also take a look back at all the movies we’ve watched, induct new members into the Hall of Fame and generally have a great time.
In Seen It, we discuss odd men, followed birds and a little obscurity you’ve probably never heard of called Star Wars.

Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. None of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
The movie announced on Facebook before every new episode. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
These boys make me so goddamn happy. I legitimately believe this is one of the best things on youtube
So happy that you watched Follow that Bird with Lorenzo, Craig. I knew I was right to send you guys that film.
According to wikipedia, Silly Putty was a failed experiment to find a rubber replacement during WWII. It was used in the Apollo missions to hold tools in place during low gravity.
Fun fact: Stan and Ollie are known under different names in different countries. Here in Poland they're called Flip and Flap.
In Italy they're Stanlio e Ollio, but they also used to call them Cric e Croc at some point.
For getting through seven seasons of one of my favorite shows-- it is my privilege to extend to you a Laurel, and Hardy handshake...
0:40 Matt just passes over that in silence! Made me laugh out loud. Thanks for the New Year's present, guys!
Some clunkers, some stinkers and some great films, but it's never dull on Welcome to the Basement. Here's to another year.
Thanx for a great year guys.
I legit get the Nightmare On Elm St 3 theme song stuck in my head too sometimes.
We should start a club. We could call it Nightmare Warriors or Dream Fighters or something.
I get the spooky Angelo Badalamenti keyboard tune from the opening credits stuck in my head when weird or creepy things happen.
I wonder if Matt has seen any of the ANOES series. I'd bet he has, which is a shame because I'd love to see something I'm so familiar with get that first impression from Matt and for he and Craig to discuss it.
Maybe I'm nuts but is this the first time you guys have ever done the film recap sitting side by side as opposed to solo close ups? I like it this way!
You are not wrong. If I had to guess they didn't have Tonna
They do this usually during the final episode of the year. I'm guessing that makes it easier for Matt to edit during the holidays.
Ooh, I think I see my package on the top that pile. I might've actually got my holiday gift there in a reasonable proximity to the holidays.
I'm currently learning how to play the unicycle. I'll try riding a ukulele next.
The Star Wars saber-fight was based on Kendo and samurai; by that fashion it was very good. Arguments suggest ObiWan was the most defensive saber-fighter style almost of all-time, making even more sense. It's my opinion Vader was confused why ObiWan was even there in the first place and was puzzling-out and toying with ObiWan with mediocre feigns while ObiWan bought time for the heroes intentionally. That's what I thought when I watched it in the theater in 1977.
Ah boy this is such a good show, and so criminally underwatched. Over the years I've become a bigger fan, comparatively, of this than of Beer and Board Games, though I enjoy both and'll continue to watch in 2019!
edit: I also want more boisterous laughter in all my life's encounters
another edit: What year was Owen Wilson for the end-of-season short??
That would be Season five, paired with THX-180.
@@craigjohnson6423 Hey, thanks!
While I've got to agree with Matt on that one, Craig the lightsabers they built were stupidly fragile. They were overly complicated devices that broke constantly. Also in the Empire Strikes Back, Mark Hamill wanted to do more swordplay but George wanted the illusion that these devices were so powerful you could barely control them. Weakest point of a New Hope for me is the dialogue, there are a lot of really goofy and clunky lines.
23:50 is the greatest onscreen correction of all time.
Craig singing Dokken. Solid way to start it off
hot diggity damn i love this show
Have a safe and happy new year everyone. (Well... almost everyone - you know who you are)
18:48 it kind of sounded like he went "YEEET!"
Janet Gaynor was also in sunrise as the wife
14:54 Nice Simpsons reference! Good ol’ Jasper. From the “Who Shot Mr. Burns Part II” episode.
12:24 Duck! Soup! That poster could have also worked for Psycho!
happy 30th birthday lee marvin!
Hey Lee Penrose here. Continuing my campaign (since episode 1) for "Flight of Dragons". Love ya!
I concur.
POTTERSVILLE was the second movie I watched in 2018 (it's on Netflix) and I'm very happy to see you talk about it in the end-of-the-year Seen It. A baffling production that lived up to my expectations of being fascinatingly bad. I make corporate training videos and have sometimes wondered what A-List actors would be like with the low-rent material of such projects. Pottersville offers the next-best thing, as it looks and sounds like a student film, albeit with some of Hollywood's finest. Ian McShane in particular brings his "A" game to "D" material, which dare I say is reason enough to check out this confusing, amusing curiosity. Happy New Year!!
Laurel and Hardy are amazing. Flying Deuces is probably my favorite.
Thanks again for such a great show. Love you guys and I hope that you have an excellent new year. See ya in 2019.
YESSSSS it's back !!!
Come play with us, Laurel & Hardy.
So good
Merry Christmas and Happy New year Fellas!
I believe it's pronounced Yanny. Yanny and Hardy.
I keep hearing that. But It sounds like Laurel to me
I hate and love you
Parenthood seems so apt an inductee.
Pottersville sounds fascinating!
Hey there, its been awhile Basement Dwellers, but just binge-watched to catch back up.... Awhile ago you teased me by saying you almost picked the movie The Fall by Tarsem Singh to watch on the show and really hoping we might see it on Season 8. If not then, then hope you'll give your opinions on it in Seen It (if you've seen it since then).
The remake of Suspiria, seen it?
Ha! DOKKEN!
I recommend "Pound Puppies and the Legend of Big Paw" to you guys. I watched it one time and I was entertained beyond comprehension. BTW, love your show!
Why isn't it that you watch Shock Treatment with Welcome to the Basement Alumni Jessica Harper (of Suspiria and Phantom at the Paradise fame)?
Amazing show
Silly Putty: Designed by the military in WW2 as a possible source of tire rubber.
matt you mightve been trying to steer people away from watching pottersville but christina hendricks and ron perlman banging in fursuits sounds pretty hilarious
Floating Weeds is great. Esp that later one.
15:30 VADERVOICEVADERVOICEVADERVOICE
I'm confused about the German company copyright claim, since the film is a Rankin-Bass production and they are an American company.
I was about to punch right through my screen when you mentioned Star Wars - NO! SOME THINGS ARE SACRED IN THIS WORLD!!
Hope you guys had a nice break!
TVTropes probably has better examples/proper definitions of this, but here’s my own take:
McGuffin = An item that is important to the character, but ultimately, it doesn’t matter what it is (it might even be the same story if the item was swapped out for another), it’s about the journey to obtain it.
Red Herring = An item or person built up to be important, but ultimately is meant to be misleading away from the real culprit (or, in the hands of a poor writer, intended to be important, but ultimately forgotten about)
The Sexy Lamp = A human character (usually a woman, usually a love interest) who is given as much character depth as an inanimate McGuffin, and could be interchangeable with said inanimate object.
When are the dead green pixels on your camera going to be inducted into the hall of fame? They've been with you for years.
Ozu is amazing. That is all.
love the show, please watch the movie brick with jgl, it's pretty great.
What it is, bitches? Love ya!!!!
17:38 no observation on Lady Plumtree's interest in the maid? (I just watched Collette)
Love how this show has advanced so much, But may i ask. Will you ever ask to do a cross over with Hal Thompson?
Craig, I don't think getting teargassed & shattered vertebrae are hijinks.
"OH GOD SAVE THE KING!"
Is it just me, or did this year just have a bunch of clunker movies? (Not episodes! The episodes were pretty, pretty, prettay good.)
Watch "Insidious" if you dare!
What about Laughing Gravy?
Would Silly Putty have met the Laurel and Hardy standard for true silliness?
Ugh, shame about the infringement for fair use, that's really really annoying. I wish UA-cam had a better way to appeal. It's getting to the point where people can strike something just because they dislike that footage is being used at all.
... What Michael Shannon movies do these guys like?
Andrea Martin is American, not Canadian. Though she has spent a good chunk of her life in Canada.
Of the classic SCTV cast, all were Canadian except for Andrea Martin and Joe Flaherty. Okay, also Harold Ramis, but he was only there briefly.
My definition of a MacGuffin: A sought object that is very important to the Characters, whereas the story's characters and themes are what is important to the Viewers. The movie The Raiders of the Lost Ark is not about the Ark. Not much time is spent on it, the story is about the heroes and how they race to find it.
1) I get Jeff Daniels and Jeff Bridges confused too! But Jeff Daniels along with Richard Thomas and Swoosie Kurtz is perfect in Fifth of July. Have you seen that? 2) I watched a series on what a disaster the original Lucas edit of Star Wars was, and how his wife saved that movie in the editing room. So worth watching. ua-cam.com/video/GFMyMxMYDNk/v-deo.html
Pump Up the Volume is the story of the life of Alex Jones
Happy New Year
#ridetheukulele
What's the Blessed Virgin doing above Michael Shannon?
Salo?
I'm not sure breaking your back is a hijink...
I grew up with Laurel and Hardy. My father always liked them better than The Marx Brothers, so that's what I always watched.
God I fucking hate IP lawyers.
Another added scene to the 1st Star Wars (although I believe they identify as the 4th) is the awful Jabba Cgi scene that’s so hastily jammed over the human actor who originally played Jabba that it’s just....ugly on every level. Especially how Han hops over/walks on(?) his tail and cartoon Jabba makes a cartoon face. If it had always been like that (and I wonder about the younglings out there who have only seen the modifications) seeing him in ROTJ would not have had been an intimidating gangster. It would have just been like, “oh, here’s that weird cartoon guy again. Is he bigger? Why isn’t he slugging all around instead of just sitting up there?”.
This is not one of their best - too bad you didn't watch The Music Box or Helpmates or Towed in a Hole
For some reason, 18:49 just killed me. Bitch, get out your house!
Ok, I kind of want to see Pottersville now.
Craig: "There's always a sadness about Stan, there's always an anger about Ollie."
Matt: "You wonder why these two guys hang out with each other."
Hmm, it almost sounds like another popular comedy duo...Cape Date and Sloan Rage. Maybe that's just what happens to comedians over time.
Just worked through all seven seasons of the show (for the 4th time) and you've become something of a cinema loving comfort blanket, you basement dwelling movie loving folks have brought much joy to this 40 year old cineaste! Have a great New Year and look forward to the delights that you'll bring us in 2019! ps. A thanks to my excellent friend Aida who introduced me to the show around three years ago! :)
I think that if it existed in a vacuum, Star Wars would be flawless. There are some elements that were done better in the sequels (like lightsaber fights), but if those had never been made we would have no basis for comparison, and those elements as they stand in the original movie are really not important flaws at all.
Thank you! I love Warren Oates and Lee Marvin! Two of my favorite actors of all time. They deserve all the credit they can get. Let's not talk about how alcoholism ended their lives too soon...
By the way, two "Seen it" questions; have you seen Point Blank (1967) with Lee Marvin and Dillinger (1973) with Warren Oates?
Just realised this was uploaded on my Dad's birthday, and he was a massive Laurel and Hardy fan. This makes me smile. Thanks, guys!
Craig doing Dokken..... now I've seen it all.
thanks for another great year guys.
Thanks for all the great episodes in 2018 guys! 😊👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Seen It? Possession (1981)
Seen it? Classic 1967 thriller Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn and Alan Arkin.
Having seen "Pottersville", I totally agree that it is a movie that makes no freakin' sense. I believe , and I may be wrong on this, that Christina Hendricks and Ron Perlman are not really having an affair, but they are simply play-acting as "bunny" and "wolf" wearing mascot outfits. That scene in the bedroom with Shannon is one for the ages ... in terms of how not to make a funny scene.
It's also like the director told Tom Lennon to crank his performance up to 11 and then some. "Pottersville" is not really "so bad it's good" as much as "so gawdawful, it's mesmerizing".
Great season guys, thank you for continuing to be one of my favorite UA-cam shows, keep em coming!
Shin Godzilla seen it. I really enjoy this new version of a classic icon. It was a refreshing take on one of my favorite characters of all time.
Man I’ve been very lucky with the uploads lately, I’ll already be on UA-cam when my notification pops up!
As a new year resolution, I will try to watch every new episode of WTB as they come out in 2019.
Looking forward to Friday!
Iggy and the Stooges album. Yay!
Silly Putty wasn't actually developed by NASA. It was created in the 1940s in an effort to find a rubber substitute because of rationing and lack of access to countries with rubber plants during World War II. NASA considered using it as a way to secure objects while in space.
"It Happened on 5th Avenue" is a great forgotten Christmas classic!
Have you guys seen Mouse Hunt? Very Laurel and Hardy-esque, stars Nathan Lane and Lee Evans trying to get a mouse out of a historic mansion
best one yet for sure
NEEP
"Shan-don't-go" seems cumbersome. "Shan-no-no" seems like a catchier bit of phrasing.
Also, do you gentlemen have any opinions on Troma films? I'd love to see you two watch "Toxic Avenger", "Class of Nukem High", or any other you find interesting.
