You commented that Wallis' "two divorces and Nazi sympathies made her an unacceptable queen." I would argue that Edward's pro-German and fascist proclivities made him an unacceptable king... Wallis gets the blame, but in truth, the British government needed him out of there one way or another.
And her name is spelled "Wallis." This seems to be a very common mistake among Commenters all over UA-cam. Don't know why. Her name has been all over the history books for almost 90 years. But then again, we all know about King Edward VIII's famous great-grandmother Queen Viktooryah.

As a fan of your channel from Thailand, I’m so delighted to hear this story here. Furthermore, I’d like to give you more information about Thai royal family’s line of succession. - According to the 1923 act of succession, which was legislated by King Rama VI and is still active today, female royals were prohibited to take the throne. The reason is that it was unlikely to have a queen regnant at that time. But time flies, and the constitution has the highest rank of law. We may see a woman to wear the crown in the future. This act also determines other interesting things, for example a male royal who marries a foreign woman must be excluded from the succession. It will be affected to his future descendants. Or a female royal must resign from the royal family and loses all of royal titles, if she wants to marry a man with lower rank. - The King’s younger sister, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Wikipedia calls her Princess Royal), gets more popular than her brother, because the people think that she lives a very simple life, follows her father’s footsteps and is the hardest working royal. So she may be a good choice to become queen, if the king dies or abdicates. - Vacharaeson’s visit to Thailand in almost 30 years surprised us all and usually stays in spotlight. It is believed that he still never met his father and sister. - In Thai history, we have one abdication. King Rama VII abdicated in 1934, only two years after the Siamese Revolution. He remained in the UK until his death in 1941.
What is your thought about the rumor that the military prefers a weaker monarch so that they can control the future monarch like what happens in Cambodia. As a result, they were behind the collapse of the princess, which happened while she was visiting a military camp?
@@est9949 I don't know the situation in Cambodia exactly. But in Thailand, as we can see from the past, monarchy and military have been supporting each other and strongly interconnecting in the same time. The current king had obsession with military since his childhood. After grown up, he served in the Army and the Air Force for very long period. He also established his own royal security command, in which he is the commander, whereas the current queen is the deputy commander. When ascending the throne, he used his power as monarch to do what he wants. In my opinion, he isn't weak at all, and won't be. A lot of military personnel has been promoting by his patronage, which seized people's way of life. He reached the top of the country, so he pretends to control everything absolutely. It is believed that he wants his youngest son to become the next king, although the title Crown Prince is still vacant, and the queen has no children. He has no plan B yet. Military and government should be helping and backing the new king in the future, when he dies. And there's another rumour about the princess. Inbreeding might cause her sickness. Her parents are cousins and they got married to keep the blue blood. His mother was pregnant once before her birth. But she miscarried. If not, she would have had an elder brother who might an heir. The couple divorced many years after that. Now, TWO years without any update about her health.
@@Fractureise I agree. It’s a better celebration when you’re not mourning. Yes she’s a queen but she’s his mother first. Queen consort Mary is stunning too
Theoretically, Victoria would be the very next…but all the other young Crown Princesses are also of age now since Leonor’s birthday in October. The biggest disappointment, to me, is that Princess Aiko will never be able to join them because of Japan’s stubbornness. 😢
The Japanese princess didn’t seem to enjoy the royal spotlight. She should’ve had the right to refuse it, but I doubt she would have whole heartedly embraced it
I mean its not too late to proclaim aiko heiress cause parliament can still change the succession laws (which sadly their was plans of making made her become heiress when she was toddler but then her male cousin was born and it got scrapped out 🙄) there was a survey back in 2021 if im not mistaken that 80% of japanese approve of her becoming an heir and debates of changing the succession laws but idk anything is still possible. Cause hello japanese male heirs are disappearing so 🤷♂️ . I mean her grandfather, the former emperor, abdicated the throne and broke the law instead of serving for life. Anything can still happen , they just need to change succession laws before girl gets married (and dethroned of royal titles ☠️). And even if she doesn’t become one I really hope her cousin can break the law soon cause man get pressuring to bear a son is just 😑 .

I am Swedish and I believe that King Carl XVI Gustaf will continue for at least ten more years. Partly because no Bernadotte Regent has abdicated (as Lindsey said) but also because he is healthy, strong and he really loves his job. But above all because he and the queen know how tough it is to be king and queen while having small children. (After all, all other modern-day regents have been crown princes/princesses for so long that their children have at least reached their teenage years before becoming regents) Victoria and her siblings have also publicly mentioned that they found it difficult that their parents were so busy and often absent when they where kids.
"for at least ten more years" - jag hoppas att Carl Gustaf får vara med i många år till, och blir minst 100 år, så att Victoria blir drottning 👑 tidigast 2046.

Peter Phillips, (Queen Elizabeth II’s oldest grandson) did not marry a catholic. His now ex wife renounced Catholicism before she married Peter or he would’ve lost his place in the succession. They married in 2008 and the rule was changed in 2011.
I highly doubt that Charles III will abdicate. If his recently diagnosed cancer advances to the point that he can't rule, I'd imagine he'd settle for William being regent.
Exactly, that is much more in keeping with British tradition. Think George III, and his son (the later George IV) as Prince Regent. Abdication or Vacating the Throne is seen as dishonourable, think Edward VIII and James II/VII.
He wont. With all heali issues, with will's kids being kids not adult (at least George) , with willing to give kids as long normal upbringing as its possible- he won't
Charles may have wanted to be king, but was not anxious for it. I saw an interview with him in which he was asked if he was looking forward to that and his reply was an icy "You're talking about the death of my mother."
She also might have been referring to the fact that Margaret I was queen of a united Calmar Union. Ingrid Alexandra will be the first exclusive queen on Norway
This Comment is kinda funny because Lindsay said exactly this in a different Video but there People complained that Margaret wasnt really the Queen of Norway

The UK doesn't have a tradition of honourable abdication because the Commonwealth intentionally made it very difficult for a sovereign to abdicate after Edward VIII's abdication. To abdicate, the sovereign must obtain the permission/consent of the Parliaments of all eight of the fifteen Commonwealth realms who have the right to chime in, the legislatures of all the Australian states, and the legislatures of all the Canadian provinces. No one seems to understand this. It's the law. It isn't optional, and they can't get around it unless they change the law. An heir cannot abdicate. They can however make themselves unqualified for the throne by converting to Roman Catholicism.
And I should add that obtaining the consent means putting a bill through every one of these parliaments and legislatures, which in itself would likely take months if not years. The recent changes to the succession didn’t have to clear the Canadian provincial legislatures, and still it took *four years* for the bills allowing them to pass everywhere.
I feel that should Charles decide to abdicate down the road he would get permission even if took a bit of time and trouble. He's already past the age of retirement, he's not the icon his mother was after 70 years on the throne and William is very popular.
Realistically if the King wanted to abdicate they'd move the legislation through the Parliaments much quicker. Especially depending on what the reasons were no Parliament/Government would want to be the one holding it up for everybody else. Of course when Edward VIII abdicated the Statue of Westminster (which recognised the monarchies of the Dominions, now Commonwealth Realms, to be seperate legally) had already been instituted, and the Canadian and South African Parliaments had to pass their own Acts to make it happen. Ireland also took the opportunity to change their laws and moved towards abolishing the Monarchy altogether, which I could see some modern countries doing too.
When Edward VIII abdicated, it helped that it was before his coronation. I'm not saying it wouldn't have been possible, but it would have been harder for him to abdicate after he'd been anointed King.
But why not change it so that they can enjoy their last years without that heavy burden? Sounds a little inhumane to me. They are literally working them to death.
For Belgium, it was basically anounced that King Filip would at one point abdicate, I believe the exact phrasing was something like, when Elisabeth felt ready for the job, so we are definetly looking forward to getting our first queen in the nearish future.
As soon as you mentioned that abdication rule in Bhutan's constitution, I shared this video in a Discord server for Disney Descendants as a possible explanation for why King Beast thought it was a remotely good idea to retire in his middle age and pass the throne on to his 16-year-old son who is still in high school. (DCOMs make no sense, lol.)

Here is to hoping that Leonor marries a member of the Capetian dynasty so that the House of Bourbons does not lose the throne of Spain after her time. Unlike other royal houses like Bernadotte or Windsor (where house membership go hand-in-hand with the succession to the throne), Spain is different because the House of Bourbon is part of the larger Capetian dynasty and is thus governed by the dynasty’s rules where house membership is limited to male-line descendants only.
Spain currently allows the parents to choose the order of the surnames of their children, so it's possible Leonor's descendants would keep "Borbón" as their first surname. I don't think the only ruling Bourbons would care much about obscure ancient dynastic rules outranking the actual laws of Spain. They Spanish Bourbons are the only Bourbons that matter, after all, so their rules are the only rules that matter.
Luxembourg had a Great Grand Duchess: Charlotte, mother of Jean, wife to Robert of Bourbon-Parma and Sister in Law to the last Austrian Empress, Zita. And, last not least, she succeeded her sister Adelaide, who was....deposed...by popular choice after WWI.
Tonga had a queen regnant for many years. Salote was queen when Elizabeth II came to the throne and visited London for the coronation. She was 6'2" and taller than the security she had. She passed in the mid 60's and I recall the National Geographic article about her son becoming king. Tonga is the only Christian nation that still has an actual coronation, not an inauguration or something like it.
I love your channel. It’s quite interesting how many monarchs there are in the world! I have a question re the coffee you’re promoting. Have you any espresso from them? Thanks!
Great video! Only a couple of corrections: Crown Princess Victoria got married in 2010, not 2011. And Princess Ingrid Alexandra is 20, not 19. She became 20 January the 21st.
Bravo on another interesting look at royals across Europe. I have a video request: Through the channel UsefulCharts I learned about several matrilineal dynasties amongst royal history in Europe. I checked, and noticed that not only were Isabella I of Castile and Manuel I of Portugal were matrilineal cousins, but there was more inbreeding in the Iberian Peninsula than I'd previously known of. Would a video on that history, which adds to the Habsburg inbreeding problems mentioned in previous videos, be a possibility?
Interesting video. Just FYI: Queen Emma was wife to William III of the Netherlands, and she served as regent for her daughter Queen Wilhelmina from 1890 until 1898. She wasn't "technically" Queen Regnant but she did rule until her daughter Wilhemina reached her majority. As an aside, I'm of Dutch descent and both my maternal grandmother and my mom were named after Queen Wilhelmina.
HRH The Princess Bajrakitiyabha is most probably not on this earth anymore. So it's Sirivannavari who's gonna succeed her father as Queen. The King gave Sirivannavari high Military ranks recently, indicating that she'll be his heir
I don't know much about the whole situation, Wikipedia (which I don't trust anyway, lol) says she's still in a coma. Do a lot of people think that she passed away and the royal family has just kept their mouths shut? And why would they not want to talk about her possibly dying? Genuinely curious! If you know any of the answers to my questions, anyway :)
The last statement about The Princess’s health was issued on January 8, 2023. There’re rumors that her brain is completely dead and she can still be alive because of medical devices. Many people believe that she’s already gone, but her father, who actually believes in fate and fortune, is not ready to let her go and finding an appropriate day to announce her death. As a Thai, I think Princess Sirivannavari has a lack of popularity and no interest in political issues. Do not overlook Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the king’s younger sister, because she’s incredibly popular among royalists!
@@doradoraemon4087 Ah okay, that makes sense. It would make sense that she's actually brain dead and can't.. come back, but they just aren't ready to either personally accept it or make an announcement. That's understandable. Thank you for the information. :)
@@doradoraemon4087That’s not possible with the current constitution of Thailand. The constitution said The King may choose any of his *son or daughter* as heir to the throne. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is the king’s *sister* and therefore it would be against the constitution to designated her as heir to the throne. Even if the king did not designated an heir when his reign had ended, the government must still only invite one of his son or daughter to take the throne. The only possible scenario is if his reign ended and there’s no surviving son or daughter… then the throne will pass to his next eldest sibling, in this case that would be Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn but this scenario is highly unlikely as the King still has many sons and daughters…
Why do you say that? Thai court may be sonewhat obscure, but I still think they would have issued a statement for such an important event as the death of the king's first born. Besides, there would have been a funeral, and the king would have been personally affected, which he did not look to be.
As soon as I saw the title of the video, I was like “It’s gotta be Norway.” I forgot about Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium (although it’s no guarantee that the Netherlands’ king will abdicate just because his three most immediate predecessors did)
The Monarchies of Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands were once all part of the Duchy of Burgundy. Burgundy knew the possibility of female succession and had it in happen in 1477, when Mary took over from Charles the Bold. And, last not least, but probably more important with regard to that: as long as the House of Hapsburg ruled in Burgundy (later on known as Spanish/Austrian Netherlands), it was usually the task of either the eldest sister or daughter of the current Hapsburg ruler (either in Spain or Austria) to be Governor his or her stead. So, those countries have a long tradition of female Rule.

Norway had a Queen-Regnant, Margaret I, who was also Queen of Denmark and Sweden under the Kalmar Union. Edward never had that.
@LJB103 no, the coronation is just the religious rite part, all legalities and power is transferred the moment the monarch dies. He was king in every single way, the coronation is not necessary and most countries don't have them anymore, it's just ceremonial.
@@arielsclamshellbra Your last part is my point, exactly. They have a try every 5 years, next being 2027 and Le Pen got 2nd last time and her party has been doing better recently. If not her, there are lots of female polititians in France that could rise to the Presidency in the next decades and become co-Princess before any other female monarch gets to their throne.

My first thought at the title was Princess Victoria from Sweden as she's the oldest of the heir apparent princesses. Earlier,, I thought it odd that Sweden's king took away his already born son's position by making the change of succession retroactive (instead of for future heirs like England did). But apparently he didn't want to but the country made him? It's odd that Swedish people insisted the change of succession had to be retroactive and not just for future born heirs?

8:20 William will not automatically be known as "William the Fifth" nor will George be automatically "George the Seventh." Each British Monarch can choose to be called whatever name they want. Yes, Elizabeth and Charles chose to use their own given names, but her father, George VI was named Albert and his brother, whose given name was David, chose to be Edward VIII before be abdicated.
Only 3 British monarchs have not used their first names as their regnal names Victoria (first name Alexandrina), Edward VII (Albert) and George VI ( also Albert). But she miscarried. If not, she would have had an elder brother who might an heir. The couple divorced many years after that. Now, TWO years without any update about her health.
I actually think the Queen of Denmark was really kind to abdicate.. This way Frederick can enjoy the moment and not be in mourning for his mother 😊

Theoretically, Victoria would be the very next…but all the other young Crown Princesses are also of age now since Leonor’s birthday in October. The biggest disappointment, to me, is that Princess Aiko will never be able to join them because of Japan’s stubbornness. 😢
Maybe one of Princess Aiko's descendants would marry a Prince Akishino in the future...
This! People allways talk about the age of the monarch when talking about abdication but allways neglects the age of the heirs children.
@AnnaLenaGbg It’s Regnant not Regent.

I agree. He waited over 70 years to be king and his whole life has been about it- he’ll never give it up now.
Yes he said in his first speech as king that like his mother he will rule until his health doesn't allow him to. They just don't believe in abdiction

Ingrid is technically going to be Norway's second queen regnant. Margaret I was Norway's first queen from 1388 till 1412.
I think what Lindsey meant is that Princess Ingrid would be Norway’s first Queen Regnant to be Norwegian. Queen Margaret I was Danish.
She also might have been referring to the fact that Margaret I was queen of a united Calmar Union. Ingrid Alexandra will be the first exclusive queen on Norway
She held the title but I think it she was more considered a danish queen than a Norwegian one

Thank You Lindsay!❤
For Belgium, it was basically anounced that King Filip would at one point abdicate, I believe the exact phrasing was something like, when Elisabeth felt ready for the job, so we are definetly looking forward to getting our first queen in the nearish future.

Bravo on another interesting look at royals across Europe. I have a video request:
Through the channel UsefulCharts I learned about several matrilineal dynasties amongst royal history in Europe.
Thank you for this very comprehensive video!

Edward never had that.

Yes, Elizabeth and Charles chose to use their own given names, but her father, George VI was named Albert and his brother, whose given name was David, chose to be Edward VIII before be abdicated.
I think she’s just using William V and George VII as examples
Only 3 British monarchs have not used their first names as their regnal names Victoria (first name Alexandrina), Edward VII (Albert) and George VI ( also Albert). Edward VIII was known to family and friends as David but his first name was actually Edward, his full name was Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David.
While correct, there is little reason to suggest that either William or George will choose for other names than William V/George IX
The continuation of Charles' rule will depend A LOT on his response to this csncer treatment
This is a great video but it’s pronounced Queen Re-gint (like detergent or diligent), not Reg-nant (like pregnant). Other than that, this was fantastic!!
You are confusing the 2 words Regent and Regnant.
@Their.Majesty_Rin You are confusing Regnant and Regent.
A Queen Regnant and a Queen Regent are 2 completely different types of Queen.
A Queen Regnant is a Queen who reigns in her own right.
A Queen Regent is a Queen who acts on behalf of another.
