The story from Mike in Breaking Bad as his time as a cop was that he and his partner would regularly get called to a house where the husband beat his wife and every time she wouldn't press charges. One day his partner was sick and Mike was called to the same house. Same thing, she didn't want to press charges. He loaded the husband in the police car and rather than take him to the police station, Mike took him out in the middle of no where and threatened his life. The husband promised he wouldn't ever do it again. Several months later she was dead by his hand. The moral of the story was that he took a half measure when he should have taken a full measure. It is also unrelated to Mike's story in Better Call Saul and why he left Philadelphia. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say it is a master stroke of writing genius, and you'll get that story in season 1 shortly.
People joke, but I understand the confusion about Chuck and Jimmy’s relation. This show does its best to avoid unnatural dialogue… and people don’t say things like “Look. I’m your brother and have been our whole lives, but you’ve got to do the work and the clients will come” in real life. Just a realism thing. They let it come up naturally in a 3rd episode flashback.
i get what you mean, but Jimmy going "i know im a lousy brother" is definitely a line written for the sake of clearing it up for the audience, rather than being written to be natural. not that it feels particularly unnatural for him to say that, but yeah
@ Oh, absolutely. It is exposition, for sure. I just feel like it feels more natural than shoving “I’m your brother” into their first scene at Chuck’s house in Uno. It’s not really WRONG to have expositional dialogue in the other sense either. Every show has to do it somehow. It’s just after watching the “Gilliganverse”, more unnatural feeling exposition stands out to me more than it did before.
@ Just another example from this universe; Skyler introduces us to a ton of characters in the pilot episode of Breaking Bad. She does this with expositional dialogue disguised as introducing characters at Walt’s surprise party to each other AND to the audience. “Marie, this is Carmen, the principal at Walt’s school. Carmen, this is my sister Marie.” Something to that effect. Can’t remember the exact lines.
This show doesnt have too many scenes with clunky exposition dumps. But, if a scene or person is vague or confusing at first, they will flesh it out (Like finally getting the answer their brothers, ect). This show is great at delicately telling the story through cinematography and subtle actions/dialogue.
As someone who watched Better Call Saul before Breaking Bad, I'd say it definitely still feels charming and entertaining even without having knowledge of Breaking Bad.
Main issue is BCS is not intended to be watched that way, it can be done, but ti will spoiler a number of things, and a number of things setup, written, and developed for payoff from BCS won't land at all.
The opener is the early 1990's in Cicero, Illinois. Which is a working class suburb of Chicago. He was arrested for a "Chicago Sun-Roof." You will find out what it is in later episodes in Season 1. BTW, Bob Odenkirk was originally from the Chicago area.
Give them time. Everyone starts this show calling him Saul because that's what we are acustomed to from Breaking Bad. By the time this show ends, calling him Saul will be wierd to them because they will be acustomed to Jimmy.
You'll find out is the best answer to what Jimmy did. At this point in the show, there is a lot of stuff you're not supposed to know, and are supposed to wonder about. :-) They'll answer most questions eventually, so asking viewers is asking for spoilers. :-(
Never ever understood why BCS is called slow. Episode 2 tuco and episode 3 mike storyline begins is absolute fast and perfectly placed. BCS is very very good.
It's not that the show is slow paced, it's just that people had certain expectations for what the show would be, and some of that takes longer to get to than expected.
Episode 1 has kids decapitating a corpse and having sex with it, Jimmy bursting into a meeting at a law firm about his crazy brother, Jimmy hitting a skateboarder with his car, and then a Slippin' Jimmy scam that turns into them showing up at Tuco's house. "tHiS sHoW iS So sLoW!"
Agree, it's my first time watching but I think it's perfectly paced. It might be a character driven show but the scenes between the characters are very engaging and meaningful. Calling this slow is like calling the first few seasons of GOT or HOTD slow because it focuses on fleshing out its characters through conversations and world-building
@@cheekyramen Being a slow show isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's slow but you're right, it's very engaging and meaningful. It's just different compared to other shows like GOT or HOTD, because in those cases, even though the show does have a lot of character development and dialogue, it focuses more on the plot compared to something like BCS. But anyway, it's just different. BCS is a piece of art in its own way.
Haha, 32:32 when both of you say it's raining heavy there worrying that the mic is picking it up...I'm watching this and there's damn near torrential downpour where I'm at right now as well. Regarding what you said about people having the opinion that BCS was slow at the start as well as Breaking Bad also being a bit slow to begin. I've always preferred shows that have a slow start & steadily build to much stronger seasons towards the end. Much rather that to shows that are too hot to start then run out of steam by the 3rd season & it's a struggle trying to get through the latter stages.
I never understood people saying breaking bad was slow. I mean episode 2 opens with them cleaning a dissolved corpse in acid that fell through a ceiling 😂😂
@@bucky7162 Get this, a guy I know told me he watched the entire first season & a bit of the 2nd(like one or two episodes) and told me he thought it was slow. I was wondering what type of pacing he expects in a show.
I think the blood in Nachos car the police found was from the two skaters from the previous episode. Tuco calls nacho and tells him to bring his van to take them to the desert.
Breaking Bad earned this production team a ton of good will. They showed that placing trust into them as storytellers pays off big. They spent that trust (in earnest) on the first two seasons of Better Call Saul. They didn't waste it at all. Makes the opening of the show feel very different because there's so much groundwork to cover - striking the right balance of it being a prequel, tying in just as much as it needs to, and ultimately paying off for a fantastic show. I'm so glad you picked up on all of this, Spartan. Really looking forward to watching you guys go through this journey!

Chuck is Jimmy's older brother (probably by 10 or so years). Chuck is the senior partner at HHM (Hamlin, Hamlin, and McGill), he co-founded the firm with Howard's father, who is either retired or passed away. We are shown in the pre-credits scene that Chuck was already a lawyer in Albuquerque when Jimmy was still living in Cicero IL. In the first episode Jimmy gave us a glimpse of the scam artist he was back then -- he clearly got himself in some serious legal trouble, and Chuck returned home to save him but made him promise to change his ways in return. Clearly at that point they were not on great terms. Kim and Jimmy seem to know each other well, and perhaps have been in a relationship in the past. No spoilers, but keep an eye on Kim, she is played by Rhea Seahorne who is clearly a brilliant actress. Mike is just present at this point, but his presence seems to indicate that he will become more important as time goes on...
Breaking bad definitely finishes on its own without BCS (or even El Camino for that matter). It has one of the best finishes in TV history, so I think any comment that says otherwise is a bit loopy. That being said BCS is like the expansion pack for the universe that nobody needed but most people (including me) love anyway
Nacho is Nacho Man! Comprendo! People who call this early season slow don't appreciate the script 😂 Also the bad blood between Mike and the police is very well spotted! Can't wait for you to get to episode 6!
Spartan the early episodes aren’t really slow per se - the writers set the tone with a decent pace. In later episodes & seasons it shifts to a real slow burn to develop the story, the plot & the characters. You cannot witness Jimmy’s aka Saul’s, Kim’s, Chuck’s & other characters trajectory & transformation without a lot of setup & events. It’s not slow, per se but rather…deliberate. The writers did an even better job with Better Call Saul I’d argue than with Breaking Bad as brilliant as it is. They learned a lot I think. This show is more nuanced & complex. You won’t see a lot of action. It’s hard to explain. You’ll see. You don’t see them being deliberate for the sake of it or to draw it out. You’ll understand. You really get to see how Jimmy turns into Saul & takes the road that he does. It’s utterly brilliant. You cannot do it fast & be convincing & believable. You get to see all the choices & events that lead him to become Saul & how it all ties in. It’s going to fun seeing your reactions as it all unfolds.
Much like Breaking Bad with it's first three episodes dealing with their first cook and then with the body & prisoner they find themselves stuck with before shifting to a slower place for the next few eps. focusing more on cancer/family stuff, BCS comes flying out the gate with Tuco & The Kettlemens, but it too will soon change the pace as it starts to focus on what's at the real heart of the show, and this will be a more long-term switch to a slower pace, with no real life-or-death stakes like you were used to constantly dealing with on BB (at least not for a while).
its so weird how people perceive human relations so differently :D it NEVER came to my mind that kim migh be his sister nor that chuck isnt his brother. like wtf? :D
You didn't know Jimmy had a shady past? In episode 1 he tells you all about it. You've concluded by episode 3 that BCS does nothing to complete the story of BB? The fact that Saul ends up managing a Cinnabon in Omaha, Nebraska is a surprise? He told us that's where he was going in BB.
Thank you so much for this amazing video! Could you help me with something unrelated: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How should I go about transferring them to Binance?
It's easy to make these kinds of comments when you've seen the show and know who everyone is. The show does dump a lot of new characters on you at once, this is only episode 3, so it's understandable that not everyone watching for the first time would have it all straight though. They'll have it all sorted out pretty soon.
It's for sure is better when it comes to storytelling and character development. It's much more complex and nuanced, like BB for grown ups. But people who expect a lot of action might perceive it as "slow".
My advice for this show, is don’t be in a rush to see everything meld with Breaking Bad. Yes, it gets there- but this show doesn’t exist to set up Breaking Bad, it exists to tell Jimmy’s story and that’s where it will spend most of its time. Some reactors get bored because they came in expecting BB cameos and references galore, and Tuco was a bit of an unfair tease… but that’s really not what this show is it all. This is a slower paced show with a lot less action than BB, it’s more character drama… but man oh man, it pays off everything so well. The fact that most people have a hard time deciding whether they prefer this or BB should say it all.
I never found Season 1 of BCS to be slow. I'm not going to go into details, but because of things you'll probably find out later, Season 2 has a kind of slow "course correction" in it that makes it, to me, be the slowest of the seasons of the show. Not bad slow, just reconfiguring some things and then setting the show on its way for the final 4 years. But season 1 of BCS moved at a more steady clip than season 1 of BB.
DETECTIVE PUDGEY ON THE CASE!!! Pudgey you knew right away the Kettlemans faked their own disappearance!!! Pudgey you're a regular Sherlock Holmes!!! You Rule!!! You guys are in for a serious rollercoaster ride with this show!!!!!!!
Sorry guys but sometimes you are thick as a brick. Funny but thick. Tuco's associate's name is Nacho. ("Tell Nacho to bring his van..."). You know what Nacho is short for?
I'm assuming that you guys, S&P, will catch on pretty soon that Jimmy is not Saul at this point in time. Jimmy is Jimmy. Saul won't enter the picture till much later. So for now, calling Jimmy Saul is incorrect. Just an FYI. Cheers!

I was looking forward to watching the other videos but they're hidden😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Guys guys! My name is Skyler white Yo!
Comparing Kim to Skyler is a bold move. We're talking about arguably the most loved and most hated characters of the entire franchise.
Well, Kim could be described as both, too.....as the story unfolds
Fake sibling couple strikes again.
I found seasons 2-4 a little slow.
Kim is my mom
I never found Season 1 of BCS to be slow. I'm not going to go into details, but because of things you'll probably find out later, Season 2 has a kind of slow "course correction" in it that makes it, to me, be the slowest of the seasons of the show. Not bad slow, just reconfiguring some things and then setting the show on its way for the final 4 years. But season 1 of BCS moved at a more steady clip than season 1 of BB.
Just wait till this show really starts

❤❤❤❤❤❤
You didnt know Saul was a criminal? Seriously? 😂
BCS is a better series than BB. Breaking Bad is more action packed, but BCS is better overall.
Can you guys react to scarface?
😮
Why are yall acting so damn clueless? C'mon man, keep up. GEEZUS
Sorry guys but sometimes you are thick as a brick. Funny but thick. Tuco's associate's name is Nacho. ("Tell Nacho to bring his van..."). You know what Nacho is short for?
Personal trainers arent exactly known for their great intelligence.
Umm, Ignacio? Why would they know? What's your point?
dude they're from australia i highly doubt they're familiar with the details of mexican naming conventions
Jackass
I don't think there are many people named Ignacio in Australia.

I don't know where your ring is, lil' man!
I'm assuming that you guys, S&P, will catch on pretty soon that Jimmy is not Saul at this point in time. Jimmy is Jimmy. Saul won't enter the picture till much later. So for now, calling Jimmy Saul is incorrect. Just an FYI. Cheers!
This show has more depth than bb i think
