@@user-ex9zm7bg3x i hate this argument. Just because someone can't or didn't doesn't mean they can't critique. He had a point. Patrick's solos were severely lacking musicality. It's this hyper aggressive "you can't do it so you can't say anything" mentality that keeps people from getting better. I play lead in college. The guy that teaches me is a phenomenal pro trumpet player but he's not a lead player. Does that make his professional or erudite advice bad because he can't play a double G?

@@ParanoiaKeepsMeWake Why is it the ones who can't or don't do it the most? Since you presume to speak for Someday, I'll tell you that what I hate is hyper-aggressive comments masquerading as "critique". It's mean, rude, and it besmirches Maynard's memory by suggesting he didn't know who was good enough to play lead for him in his last years. I saw Maynard's band twenty times over the course of thirty years, and heard his musicians play a lot of amazing and some not so amazing things. But I would never be petty enough to say that any of their solos made me "LOL". I was at the tribute concert and heard some great playing from Pat. And if I heard your teacher perform, I sure as hell wouldn't say "watch this guy demonstrate how never to" play a G. And how on Earth does what I say "keep people from getting better"?

Everyone standing on that stage owes a piece of their soul to Maynard Ferguson. It took all of their collective and colossal talents to equal who Stan Mark called..."The Greatest Trumpet Player in the World!" No - there is no way to choose the greatest, because there were so many greatest - all of whom we trumpeters idolize for each of their unique gifts and contributions to the music world and trumpeting in particular. Still - what we hear in this amazing tribute is all the love generated for The Boss... and all the love he poured out of that horn and from his heart to all of us. May his legacy as exemplified by all these wonderful players live on for eternity!

I've read many of the comments. Some are negative about some players. Some are positive about other players. My favorite comment is: "This is life!" -- because that's what life is! You encounter jerks in your life and you encounter geniuses in your life and then you encounter arrogant egomaniacs and conmen and liars in your life, but you decide to work with them all so that you can create something beautiful, and these musicians have teamed together to create something that is not only beautiful, but astonishingly beautiful. I think the "life lesson" here is "it's a team effort". To all the naysayers out there, I say that Wayne and Eric and Patrick are different people, but when they work together they have created something that makes the world sit up and take notice. Maynard Ferguson was their muse.

WOW , the amazing thing is that each player has his unique style and color on their high range, in mi opinion:
Mayashiro- I love this guy, he has so beautiful sharp tone up there, like no one, really, there are no brute force at all, is pure style.
Bergeron - Well......I Should said Mr. Wayne Bergeron, I think that he has the prefect tone up there, I mean...so full!!! so powerful...if you look...he need to play far away from mic. and I need to say this...he can just blast the volume of Hession and Eric, is a MONSTER!! the prefect guy for a studio recording.
Hession- There are so negative comentaries , Man, I heard Hession live with Maynard, this guy is a big star! so big Carisma, and he has his unique style, He really can set up the whole show on fire!
Obviously, all the rest all great players!!

We talk about it because drummers are supposed to keep steady time. It's their main job. If you let the tune drag, it affects the band and the soloists. To me , this drummer ruined my enjoyment of this performance by dragging the tempo by about 20%

3:49 The video was definitely edited over. Wayne messed up on a part of his solo so it was agreed, I guess, to play over it just for this video with another solo by him at another time. I really wanna hear the original one. I don't think that I would consider it a mistake. From the little time I heard it in the background of the fake solo line, it didn't really sound bad.

A lot more likely that the valves simply weren't affecting his playing that high up and that he intended to bring the tone down as a gradual fall since the partials slot so loosely up there. It's not too difficult to replicate yourself (assuming you have have the chops to play that high that comfortably of course)

Even though Hession made an ass out of himself, I still hold in high regard anyone who can play lead on a Maynard Ferguson set list, night in and night out. Patrick is a helluva lead player. Eric makes it look sooo easy, the great ones always do. Wayne .... smh. Tone is fat, brilliant and full. If I had to pick one player to sit down and play a high register themed piece of trumpet music ..... Wayne Bergeron all day.
