  • The hazards are getting knocked a notch today as I fire up my trusty Kioti DK40 tractor a start putting some chips down on the ground while grinding some of the hundreds of tree stumps I"ve got around my woodlot. The Woodland Mills WG24 is the PTO-driven stump grinder that I"m using today which works well as a simple three-point hitch setup. With nothing more than the a little technique and some back and forth driving, I get the stumps put where they belong as wood chips instead of wood hazards. I'll take you through the basic operation of the Woodland Mills WG24 stump grinder today and explain why cutting takes place in forward direction as opposed to reverse. You'll also see some of the built-in features of this stump grinder up close which makes it a simple user-friendly piece of equipment. Glad you're all here for the tour today, here we go!

The many camera angles appears to be a real teacher of the grinder. It show the sideways slack helps in the positioning of the cuts. Never used one but it is good to have the right equipment for a unique job.

Another great video Sandy, thanks for keeping us all entertained. I just recently purchased the same grinder and power it with a Bota L2501. With the crappy weather I've only been able to grind two stumps. Wanted them ground as deep as possible, so I spent more time clearing the dirt and rocks from around the perimeter than I did actually grinding. They were both green Douglas fir and measured 46" and 56" diameter at grade. I sawed them as close to grade as I could before grinding. Took me 35 minutes on one and 45 minutes on the other. I am totally happy!
I am sure grinding green or rotten stumps, and hardwood or softwood are going to be a big factor in the amount of time it takes to grind.
I also wanted to recommend that you get in the habit of greasing those flange bearings sparingly. They are sealed and really need very little grease unless you blow the seals out (by over greasing). This applies to all flange and pillow block bearings. Think the manual states that they are pre-greased at the factory. You probably have both types on your mill and possibly your chipper as well. Stay safe doing what you do!!

As with any Woodland Mills product, it looks simple yet robust, and very capable. But my stumping needs are on much more challenging ground - hilly, variable pitch, tight quarters. I suspect I would struggle with that one simply because it depends entirely on the tractor for positioning.

Another great video Sandy. I've had this stump grinder for two years, and have had a Carlton Walk be side grinder for 15 years. Three things I've learned running this stump grinder. I removed the big heavy steel guard because it gets in the way doing larger bigger stumps. I replaced it with a heavy rubber mud flap, so it bends out of the way when up against a stump, yet still deflects wood chips. Second, I have found grinding left to right, the opposite of what the manual suggests, I have better visual and accuracy of where exactly the cutter wheel is on the stump. Third, I feel there is a design flaw in the tooth placement. There needs to be more room between the wheel and the edge of the carbide end. I find this small space, especially on the teeth facing straight down, get clogged with woodchips, and prevent the tooth from getting a good cut. When this happens, the stump grinder feels like it has dull teeth, and pivots up much easier. I've considered suggesting this design flaw to WM, but feel they would just say thank you and let it go. Who knows? Anyways, the grinder is great for out in the bush on my own land, but I use the Carlton for residential work, where I can get in much tighter areas.

I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking if I have a row of stumps like this I might try just making several passes in the same direction so I didn’t have to do as much backing. Nice video. I have some large stumps under my belt with a very similar Baumalight grinder. I understand the difficulty in getting the lower arms tight with that type of adjustment setup. The grinder shifting bugs me, but it's not insurmountable. If you can't get it exactly right. Try putting some large spacer washers on the lower pins.

That stump grinder is impressive. Your idea with a second camera is a good one. I see RV Backup cameras listed online for around $100.00 American.
If you could replace one of the 3 point stabilizer arms with a hydraulic cylinder, you would have better control of where the stump grinder is at. It would let you position it much easier than steering the tractor. I see 2 hoses at the back of your tractor, so I am thinking that you might have a control valve that would already be available. If not, possibly you could use a diverter valve from the loader 3rd function.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Viability is an issue with the wg24, doesn't seem to matter what tractor it's on, it's the nature of the 3 point set up I think, But it's still an awesome product for the land owner. I bring a can of marking paint when I am out grinding stumps, after I have ground a few I get out with the paint and walk the work and tag anything I missed or couldn't see. I couldn't live without mine anymore.

Ok, I finally got it out of the crate a few days later. I still find it nerve-racking to cut down a PTO (chopping up a brand new bit of gear) but it went well. I’ve taken out about two dozen stumps with it over the past couple of weeks and I agree, its a great grinder. Mostly 18” to 20” across, and mostly Eastern White Pine, so very soft. After the first 6 or 8 of them, I found I could tell when I was biting right just from the feel/vibration of the tractor (mine’s only 27hp at the PTO). Having watched your work in this video, and the initial install video you’d done, made the learning curve a LOT shorter for me. Thanks again!!

great vid Sandy, would it work to ratchet strap the grinder to the right of tractor, just to take the swing out of it & eliminate a bit of guess work on the cutter position? Also the camera should have a plug somewhere near the so you could re position it between the two point of views you need it? Keep up the good work. I vote woodlandmills should give you a bit of sponsorship, if they don't already. I know I purchased equipment in Australia because of your Vids ☺👍

Sandy, is it advisable to use this stump grinder on frozen stumps?
Are they too hard when frozen?
    What are folks saying.
I ordered one for down here on Prince Edward Island. Was wondering if I can use it right away, or better to wait until spring?

That's a good question. I plan on using it on frozen stumps and I"ll be sure to update you to let you know if I find any difference

Now I am just a backyard welder, but, some of the Welds on your stump grinder especially on the shroud are not the nicest welds I have seen. One would think that the amount of money you paid for your stump grinder the workmanship would be a little more eye appealing. Just something I noticed. Does a very nice job.

It definitely seemed to take everything you threw at it!! It actually seemed to cut better when you forced it a little harder! Not once did it seem to pivot outward, which is there for when you do push forward to much! Also, once it pre-loads itself sideways, it didn't seem to jump around much at all! Happy Holidays to you and your family, and a Safe and Prosperous New Year!!

I agree. I'm was a bit hesitant to push too hard on it but I think it could take a good amount more. Happy Holidays!

I think if you were to use a h/d ratchet strap and a h/d spring, hooked to the left rear and pulling it towards the right front, it would preload the grinder to the right and therefore not be so violent on the three point system.

the most efficient stump grinding obviously starts with the, as much as possible elimination of the need to to grind stump by, chainsawing the tree as close as possible to and level with the ground. We all know how fast a saw chain can dull with a little contact with the ground. When I am next thinning in the plantation I will be trying the "flush cut" method.
As short a chainsaw bar as practical, a thin square of plywood with a tree diameter+ U notch cut into it to place on the ground around the tree to serve as a chain protector, then a close to the ground, level to the ground, bottom of the wedge cut, then the downward angle cut to free the wedge, then rotate the chain guard plywood and cut the back cut level to the ground a fraction of an inch higher than the first bottom of the wedge cut. Yes, a proper small sawmill "system" includes a stump grinder. Using the stump grinder as little as is practical makes sense.

I like that idea with the plywood. Thanks for sharing

@@sawingwithsandy I do not know the details but what I see for our red pine plantation is its evolution into a sustainable wood that does not have very identifiable rows and with mixed species. This will involve removal of trees here and there and perhaps not a row at a time. So, not so convenient to drive the stump grinder down a row, hence "flush cut". Thank You for the demonstration of your stump grinder.

Being retired military we used red ribbons attached to various parts that needed removed prior to operation. maybe you should attach a ribbon to the pin.

Just wondering.... I think you could buy a chain saw, and a bunch of chains for less than $1000 and have that saw dedicated to cutting the stumps. I know it can be rough on saws, chains and your back, but it would save you much more than $1000 when you consider the cost of the stump grinder.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  Рік тому +1

Hey Mike. Chainsaws for sure do work. I used chainsaw for years but the trouble I ran into was the saw gets very very hot while sawing through stumps and often would stretch my chains. I often would end up dulling a chain on every stump which took alot of time away from the stump removal.

Many people would gladly spend the +- $1,500 difference and have the tractor do the work while they sit in a climate controlled cab. Especially someone older or otherwise physically challenged.

SANDY I know you’re a smart man but that demonstration was pathetic grinding rotten pine stumps you could clean them out with your bucket on your front end loader in. 1/4 of the time
There is a way to fix that sway in your three-point hitch I wish I lived closer I would show you how to do it

Great job and great video! I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking if I have a row of stumps like this I might try just making several passes in the same direction so I didn’t have to do as much backing. I also try to top my stumps as low as possible with a chainsaw to lessen the amount of grinding.
