I rode Winnatts Pass this week and full respect to anyone who's ridden this brutal climb. It's easily the hardest climb I've ever done. Kudos for doing this video 👍
Thank you, this is my favourite climb. I first climbed Winnats in 1981 in the evening like your climb and loved it.
Love it! Decades ago as when i was racing in the 'schoolboy' and later in the 'junior' class I used to go up and down Winnats Pass (and the Snake and Woodhead Passes) training. There was also a group called 'The Chain Gang' that used to set out from Hazel Grove on training runs. This was back in the days of Tommy Simpson and Jacques Anquetil (Eddy Merckx was up and conning). I used to ride for Glossop Velo and later Manchester Wheelers, I don't know if these clubs are still going. Good times!
Both clubs still going, hope you're still getting out yourself!
Super effort, Katie! Well done. Checking that time after almost passing out and see your quicker, makes it all the more worth it. 👍💪
Thanks Katie, this brings back memories of going down Winnats in the 80s on 23mm tubs full gas and then trying to brake for the cattle grid at the bottom.
The same ride used to include going up the Cat and Fiddle from Macclesfield to the pub at the top.
Really enjoyed watching this video. What a scenic route!! I also enjoy doing long climbs. Its the ultimate test of endurance. Well done Katie!!
Awesome effort Katie! Powerful legs. Rode Winatts a few times when I lived nearby. Gorgeous climb but I was usually too busy huffing & puffing to look around. Your video at least showed what I was missing all this time. 😜
Best video you've made. Nice effort; and good narration.
And headwind all the way too.
You conquered Winnat's in the wind we've had this week - I salute you.
I prefer climbing too. I just get into a rhythm and into the zone - it's hypnotic.
The best thing is, when you've got to the top of a climb you've achieved something, even if you've done it slower than previously.
I go over to Winnat's from Macclesfield, there's climbing to get to the climb😍
Oooh - that point where you stand up always gets me. It’s weird, depending on fitness I’ve either sailed up there, or crawled to a halt and walked that bit. Well done, a cracking effort and big thumbs up to whoever was fit enough to film it.
I used to live out near there, climbed it a lot. Did it a couple of weeks ago, made me realise I am getting older. But still riding it......A pretty fab climb, and one of those which is hard enough for car drivers to empathise and treat you responsibly.
Know the climb well and done it a few times. Part of a century ride I do and usually hit it with at least 55 miles in my legs, It's a stunning climb. Really enjoyed watching this, gives you a real sense of how brutal it is especially if you are going for a PB. Nice work Katie...👍
The scenery around that climb is so beautiful. Great video katie
Thanks Katie ! What a good video love the climb and the scenery
A fantastic effort Katie, well done you.
That is a great effort getting up there Katie.
Love this video. I've torn something in my knee doing cross country (running) and this is great motivation as something to aim for. We all know how you feel in this video!
Love your videos and this one was particularly good. Very impressive cycling 👍👏🚴🏼♂️🚴🏼♂️
Great inspirational choice. I miss this place. It looks so ethereal with moonlight, and is certainly on the bucketlist.
Wow, that was an epic climb 👍. Coming from Sheffield, know Castleton like the back of my hand. Remember riding my 125cc trail bike up there once and nearly blew the engine up!! 😁
I was there today, and now here I am being offered your video. Spooky. It’s a spectacular place, but one hell of a climb. I’m in awe 👍
Beast-mode! That is one awesome climb. I would love to have those roads and that scenery where I live. That was so good. Well done Katie!
Katie, I just had to come back a watch this again today. The roads and the views are stunning...and so is the cyclist! What a great ride. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Chapeau Katie, outstanding, very well done 👏👏👏👏
I drove up that hill recently in my van, it was hard enough on the van 😁. Great effort. Ride safe 👍🏻
After seeing the video yesterday thought I’d give it a go first time some one in a car just stopped in front of me second time I took your advice and kept a steady pace and didn’t look up 9.15 happy with that. Keep climbing stay safe and I might see you in Majorca again 😎
Awesome video with fabulous views, keep up the good work 🚲😀👍
Amazing! well done. Love how you really throw yourself into it. I am off to try my first proper climb tomorrow . This has been really helpful. Wish me luck!
Have a cracking ride! Just enjoy the pain :)
Remember the pain stops when you do... at the top, granny ring all the way at your own pace, sorry Katie for jumping your comments, I love hills too 😘 happy riding Hadwydd.
@@KatieKookaburra I will bear that in mind. Thanks!
Did the climb - easy peasy. Did a few steeper ones over the weekend
I did this climb last summer having never been to the area before and having no idea what to expect in terms of the scenery. Wow! What a place! I have to say, the video does not actually do it full justice. I remember having my breath taken away in two ways that day! Great job by the way - they're some impressive numbers!
Me and my brother have just come back from a diy coast to coast trip I made up from Cleethorpes to Liverpool with a overnight stay in Sheffield. We hit a big climb out of Sheffield, managed OK but when we came to Winnats pass my god! such a hard climb, the first section to the shop feels like cycling through treacle, we stopped for a minute at the shop then tried to power up but we had no chance with bike packing bags on and had to walk up defeated which was difficult in itself. We have decided to come back and give this a go later this year after a bit of hill training and without the heavy loads, such a beautiful place! I have so much respect for you smashing up that climb! well done!
Looks amazing! Had a long ride planned in the area (including Winnats) before Covid came to town. Hopefully by the end of the summer it should be on again. :D
Great job Katie,I’ve been down it but think it would be safer going up it as god it’s fast, how about hardknock pass that is one I would like to have another go out and stop twice on the way up but did not walk, really enjoying your little videos which you keep banging out, keep them coming 👍
That was a hell of an effort Katie! Really well done!
Thanks Kevin! 🙂
Well done Katie, inspirational video. 💪
Love your videos Katie ! So well produced and just honest !
That is the biggest compliment!!! Thank you, it was worth the pain then 😂
Katie Kookaburra do you ever get across to Yorkshire? My demon hill is Blakey Bank, maxes out at 25%.
Btw have you got a Nut-R axle mount GoPro mount?
Really enjoyed this. As a runner turned cyclist I was never great at hills when I was running but now I’m cycling I absolutely love climbing hills.
I’ve only ever managed to ride up it once. There’s a bit about 2/3 of the way up where the wind just hits you and I come to a halt, and it’s so steep, you can’t get going again. The one time I managed to ride all the way up was with a tailwind! Perhaps I could do it if I had a 40 sprocket!
You can usually smell the burning clutches and brakes from the cars.
I have to say well done, that was a great effort. Chapeau!
What about doing Snake Pass from Glossop?
I've tried it twice over the last couple of years and it broke me both times. Well done
Girl, you’re putting it DOWN on the Watts. Well done!
I cried when I got to the top!! Took a lot longer than your effort too👊 Great vid👍🏻
I love the ability to fast forward these videos ❤️
I watched, inspired and off to do my local loop lol. Stunning scenery and climb. Looks like fun.
I love getting into "the zone." I don't realize I am in the zone until I start to come out of it. It is a good place to be.
Chapeau...superb effort...you are a natural grimpeur
Great effort. Never ridden Winnats. I've driven it many times and it looks brutal. Will have to bite the bullet sometime and have a go.
Good effort, well done!
It's not about the pain, it's about meeting the challenge. I understand the mental aspect exactly as you. You must want it!! Well done KK!!!
Nice one. Strangely I haven't done this yet and I've been near to Castleton a lot. You should do Pea Road Lane in Stocksbridge, holme moss in Holmfirth, Jackson Bridge in Hepworth. You've probably done some. Hardest climb I've done yet is shibden wall in Halifax. Not long but because of big cobbles you have to keep above a certain speed so you don't fall off.
Hi Katie, you asked for suggested climbs, can I suggest 2?:
1) Sychnant Pass going up from Dwygyfylchi toward Conwy;
2) in Llandudno, going up the Great Orme (was recently the final stage of the Tour of Britain) - we used to do this as kids, visiting my Aunty and Uncle on Pyllau Farm at the top.
Cheers.
I read today that Bristol is considering a travelator on one of the steep hills! Cracking idea!
Great video! I live in Sheffield and usually do the Mam Nick side if I make it that far across the Peak. I did Winnats once on a Sheffield => Manchester ride a couple of years ago and I only managed to not get off because the traffic was light and I could do S shapes up the steepest bits.
Re: requested data climbs: Mam Nick and Froggat
When I started watching this video and you mentioned hill. I thought great will check it out and see if I can do it. Not a fan of hills. But if you never try you will never know. All I can say is flipping well done. And you must have some incredible looking legs. Will subscribe to your channel and check out some more videos. Keep up the good work. Stay safe.
Love this. Many moons ago I struggled up Winnats towards the end of The Polka Dot Challenge sportive. As a reasonable road racer, I foolishly used my standard bottom gear of 42 x 19, so my cadence may have been slightly less than optimal! Interestingly, I've since climbed it many times on a mountain bike, using much lower gears and much less effort, in much faster times. Next job is to return on my favourite bike, the Ribble CGR ti, and do it in comfort.
really nice effort on a beautiful pass
Looks tough, going to give it a go in a few weeks!
Brilliant effort Katie! Which cogs on the back did you use? I’m experimenting with 165mm cranks and have converted my Bianchi to use an 11-40 cassette. Can’t wait to try it out!
Great work, you looked a lot smoother and faster than me up there. Just had a look at Strava, I did it in 12.37.
Well done Andrew!! It’s steep AF ha!
Kudos! My benchmark climb - I compare all others to it. It's one of the best in the Peak District
Well done! Nice video. Ride on!
Thanks for this video - absolutely stunning for the view, the action and the fitness data - you are one fit woman!!!!!
Ahh cheers Kevin 🙂
Hi Katie, great effort! Would love to see you climb Riber in Matlock
Is that going up bi rushop edge n that kinda area, brill video and a bloody good effort
What an amazing climb! You rock!!!!
Nice one Katie great effort 👍💪 the last time I went up there it was in winter and they closed the road, there was sheet ice at the top where the cattle grid was so couldn’t go any further, going down was scary as heck, but looked stunning with snow everywhere. I saw a guy struggling up Curbar today you should go there next 👍 haven’t cycled up there myself for a few years 🤔
Or Riber, that’s a personal favourite of mine.
Bloody hell I wouldn’t be going anywhere near it in winter!! Stay safe lad!
thank you so much for showing us this!!!!! its so nice to see other women’s power instead of men like Phil Gaimon and others who would do this climb at like 450w+ or something insane
Your Definitely a true cyclist Katie (no pain )(no game ) 😬great climb you done well done.
Well done on the climb! Powered through it!
Come to North Wales and try the Gwaenysgor climb 😜
I Love you Katie, for the cyclist in you. You make some amazing content. Keep it going and inspiring.
Terrific job !✌️
I love all your videos but this was a cut above. Stunning effort and the scenery was beautiful too.
Robert!!! Thanks so much! To be honest it’s just such a cracking view round there :)
Did this climb today it was very busy. I was using 34/28 till a fair way after the cattle grid then 34/32. Out of interest what gears were you using as looked like were spinning out of saddle?
Huge Kudos to for doing the climb. Super inspirational 👍👍👍👏👏👏
“I love the pain. I love the suffering.” Yep, you are a born cyclist.
Great video! Your pedal speed was great. Honestly! You know how to just approach a hill and conquer it. Focus on the task. Not pain. Every pedal stroke is that much closer to the end. Any power to the pedals is power to.the wheel. You're so good at this. Me? I am the old tipper truck in the slow lane. I don't have a super fast bike. So.......hey I am out there going. Enough said. Health and happiness to.you Ms. Katie.
You are a great cyclist and a great inspiration
I know it's old school but I would have like to have watched your heart rate. Great effort young lady.
Yeah defo will add it next time! :)
Brilliant effort - I can only admire your power and cadence. I’ve tried this climb twice - the first time I ground up it at a very slow pace, weaving all over the road on the very steep bits! The second time the road was wet and I couldn’t get any traction & had to walk it!
Would you consider doing a video on Park Rash in the Yorkshire Dales? It’s vicious, but beautiful!
Well done though, it’s a tough and steep ol’ climb! I used to have to do the same but with some practice for sure!! Park Rash... well it might already be in my diary 😉😉 xx
Good effort, spot on Lady :)
Hi Katie, how about the Holmemoss climb from Holme. It’s a classic, made more iconic after the TdF stage going up there.
Totally awesome ride, even more as I am doing this in the next few days 👍
Love these vids, I want to do this climb 😍
Nice to see the place I started cycling 37 years later, hasn't changed, still windy. We used 42x21T in those days at about 3rpm
There are many hills in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One Wild Pl., Alpha Dr., Josephine St./Arlington Ave., and S. 18th St. are relatively easy. Flowers Ave./Kilbourne St./Tesla St., and Sycamore St. are tough, but probably not anything like Hardknott Pass. If your up for a steep climb with more traffic, give Negley Ave. a try.
That is one Crazy climb! You are a true legend
Well done walked up it the other week full respect
Thank you Katie glad I asked for winnets 😁 I love that beautiful wall of pain that is winnets and now it’s even better watching beautiful you smash the hell out of it 👏🏻 I’m so impressed with that effort 👍🏻 especially with that wind keep up the good work 🥰😘 #dreamwife 😉🤣
Cross O’ Greet from either side is a great climb with stunning views if you get the right day for it. It’s hilly round there, right up your street!
Love the video and commentary. The climb is very picturesque, maybe one to visit in the future when there is no wind 😂. Ps great effort, watts are high 💪💪
Thanks Richard! Any climbs you want to watch me do in future?
@@KatieKookaburra Only cycled it on my virtual Tacx video but Buttertubs Pass looks nice. Have you completed that one?
It always smells of clutch with the cars struggling up it - good effort
My dads Ford Escort burnt out its clutch up here in the late 80's
Dawn yoo that was a beast ass effort 💪💪💪💪💪💪
Wow !! Well done.! ❤
We'll done ! Walked up several times . Would not be doing that on a bike. Have you tried Whalley bridge to buxton via long hill . I did it Tuesday and not been on my bike since need two full days to recover.
It's a deceptive gradient just getting to the cattle grid at the bottom 😬😅
you took the words out of my mouth Kate its a brutal climb its a short sharp shock !
Excellent climbing. Well done.
Hi Katie another great vid just wanted to know do you also use a HRM?
Nice! I had to walk a good chunk of this when I tried it the other day, ended up getting a terrible stitch as I was walking my bike up and could barely move haha
Wow I'm in shock. Only been cycling a few weeks and that seems an impossible feat. I am struggling on a 7% climb. Hopefully I will one day get good enough to have a crack at hills like that. Well done felt proud watching you.
You will be able to do it for sure. I struggled a LOT when I first started. Just keep at it :)
You did great. I do mountain biking round the area and have always chosen to avoid it 😂
Good effort💪 Very pretty area, would rather go down it👌
Fantastic effort, I have walked Mam Tor a lot and my car struggles up that last bit. So to cycle it is very impressive. How about doing the other ascent to Mam Tor?
Fantastic ride ! I've not done Winnats for years. I fell of once back in the 60s on 69" fixed! Have you tried Ashbourne Lane in Chapel-en-le-Frith?
