Naming the characters is one of the most significant parts of the writing process. It gives them an identity as potentially real people and not simple assets for the narrative. I understand why George takes so much care in choosing character names, and I wish I had that ability. Instead, I do what he described the other writer was doing, except I use descriptors as placeholders instead of numbers, since they reflect some of their personality better than an arbitrary tag. ^ It actually does mean that. Davos was the first in his family to be elevated in his status at all, by Stannis, and in the process of becoming a lord he was able to make his own house. He didn't know what to call it but as he was a smuggler and someone who was worthy of the sea, so to speak, he comes up with the name rather abruptly as I recall it. But no he was POOR growing up, he grew up in one of the worst basically "ghettos" in Westeros. Flea Bottom, in King's Landing. He was only given the title by Stannis after successfully defending one of the Baratheon castles prior to the events of the show but Stannis also took a few knuckles from his as well for his previous acts as a smuggler. As for his Dad though, his Dad was so common I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't even have a first name. Forget a last one, though. That was all Davos.
@@publiusventidiusbassus1232 I'm named for my grandfather, but one of my uncles is literally a junior of that grandfather, so I'm named for him too. My father is a junior, and he wanted me to be a third. There's literally another person with the same first and last name as me in my own hometown, though he's like 40 years older and we're not related. Given the email address I was assigned in college, I was the 7th person with the same first-last name combo to attend. I've looked it up, and there are over a dozen people who share my whole name, middle included, in the US alone. One Summer as a kid, the place where we took swimming lessons one year had 4 other Richards in my class alone. We all had to go by different variations to differentiate: Richard, Richie, Ricky, Rich, and we used the last name of the last guy. I had never met any of them before that Summer, and I don't think I ever saw any of them ever again after. How many James/Jim/Jimmy's, John/Jon/Jonathan's, William/Will/Bill's, or Joseph/Joe/Joey's are there in the world? I definitely graduated HS with multiples of each of those names. Same with Kelly/Kelley and Kaitlyn/Kaitlin/Caitlin. There were even 2 Siobhans, and I'm in the US, not the UK. It's only realistic for people to share names.
@@tichondriusstormrage The 2nd R in George RR Martin is Richard... Edit: I don't think I was ever notified about your comment... 4 years? Wow I feel old.
I like the realistic approach to character naming, I think it not only creates a sense of realism, but it is also a great way of explaining character origins, relations, and history. Like, for example, at the Twins, there's countless descendants of Walder Frey who are al named either Walder or Walda (for girls), because the Freys are all sniveling sycophants trying to earn praise from their lord. Or like how all Ned Starks children are named after men who were important to him and that he loved, Robb after Robert Baratheon, Jon after Jon Arryn, Brandon "Bran" after Brandon Stark, Ned's older brother (in addition to Brandon being a classic Stark name), and Rickon after Rickard, his father. I would be willing to bet that if he had had a couple more sons, there'd be a Benjin/Ben as well as a Howland. Actually, how badass would that be? A Stark named after Howland Reed, "The Howling Direwolf of Winterfell"
@@landofthehazymist in the family tree of starks in the world of ice and fire there is actually a couple of Arya's and Sansa's in the stark family tree. Great grandmother's and great aunt's. That sort of thing. Honestly I'm surprised he didn't name Sansa or Arya Lyanna Stark. Due to how close ned was with his sister.
now i know why elden ring has names like: melania melina merika morgot margit millicent mohg radagon radahn rykard renna ranni rennalla godrick godfrey if i had a dime every time i confused melina and melania and radahn and radagon...
I imagine her eye's blinking sounding like Squidward's walk sound. Also immediately after she laughs, I swear i could hear the Windows XP's closing sound. I'm sure Zuckerburgs sister is a nice person though.
At first I was all, "OH MY GOSH THE LAUGH IS SO ANNOYING!" Then I realized she's probably totally fangirling and trying to listen and pay attention but inside her head she's going "OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH I'M ON THE SAME STAGE AS HIM AND TALKING TO HIM DON'T BE WEIRD ACT NORMAL!" and totally failing at it because she's so nervous and awestruck. Or maybe I'm projecting how I would be if I were sitting chatting to him. IDK.
When George mentioned the Stark and Lannister naming conventions were proper family customs, it made me wonder why Jaime wasn't the one named Tyrion. With Robb I just explained it away as Ned honoring Robert, since he was born around the end of the rebellion. But I'm not sure why Tywin waited with Tyrion. My guess is he resented the naming convention since his father was so weak, and planned to put an end to it. But he used it on his last son as a punishment for "killing" his mother.
The Ty- thing isn’t super strong in the Lannister family. There’s, Jason, Gerion, Lancel, and Kevan Lannister. Also Jaime was a twin and I don’t think there are female Ty- named Lannisters.
I think seaworth was made for him by stannis. I may be wrong but I don't think Davos ever had two names as a smuggler, and after his aid at the siege at storms end Stannis named him a lord and since lords must have two names gave him the name seaworth.
@yung turt You are correct about all of the stuff you said in your first comment. Davos often refers to himself as “Davos of Flea Bottom” because he didn’t have a surname prior to becoming the Onion Knight and Stannis giving him his choice of a surname. He also is nicknamed Davos Halfhand.
How to create a name in the ASOIAF universe: when not giving them normal names (Jon, Robert, Brandon, Gregor and so forth) simply take a common name and change two or three letters. Edward = Eddard Circe = Cersei Jamie = Jaime Jeffrey = Joffrey Marcella = Myrcella Thomas = Tommen Kevin = Kevan Peter = Petyr Lance = Lancel Stanley = Stannis Samuel = Samwell Ramsay = Ramsey Margery = Margaery Richard = Rickard, Rickon and Dickon Benjamin (Benji) = Benjen Darius = Daario etc. Is that starting to become obvious? Well, then just throw some randomly exotic names in the mix.
When the cam looks at her or when the mic picks up her voice, that would be me. Just totally enthralled. Such a charmed speaker. As always, bravo George. So down to earth yet so far beyond in terms of success.

i write campaigns for d&d and it's super fun to just write a bunch of fantasy sounding names at once and then assigning them later. i usually start off with parts of a word or sound and build off it like one character i have,"cloufrid" is just cloud and fridge
I love this look of naming the characters. I am more into stories that are based in long ago times. People back then were very much name after their fathers. My family still does this and our middle names are all after other family members and my brother is a Jr.
I know it's not professional by any means but if I were speaking with a mind like this I would probably be laughing uncontrollably at anything he says out of nervousness.
I'm currently writing a novel that I hope will turn into a series of novels. For my names, I simply use a name generator. For character names, I'm using old Celtic names as I feel those kinds of names fit with the vibe of the novel's setting
She does her job so smoothly that people find nothing else to do besides criticise meaningless bullshit, like its perfectly acceptable not to like fantasy books, if she does her job well thats it.
One of the keys also, which he did as well C.S. Lewis and Brian Jacques is to make character names which you would never hear in real life, but names that still sound plausible and natural. For example, Sansa. That's not a name you would ever hear, or Tyrion, and Tywin, yet throw in something slightly familiar like Margaery etc. That makes the characters even more relatable somehow.
Me trying to come up names for my characters in stories. Put random letters or put words together until I hear something that I find nice enough to fit my ears.
At 1:55 "Never give 2 characters in a story names that begin with the same letter." My mind immediately went to "SAURON" and "SARUMAN". In the cartoon version of Lord of the Rings, they dropped the "S" in the latter (making it "Aruman"), so that the audience wouldn't get confused.
George turned that around and was like, "Melina, Marika, Maliketh, Millicent, Malenia, and Morgott. I wanna use all of these, so I'm gonna use all of these!"
1:53 Thank you George for the naming in Elden Ring, it totally make sense why it is so easy to understand and remember: Radagon, Radahn, Rykard, Ranni, Renna, Renala Godfrey, Godwyn, Godefroy, Gorick, Marika, Mohh, Morgott, Margit, Malenia, Miquella, Maliketh, Millicent, Melina Fortissax, Lansseax, Placidusax, Granssax,

People being named after family members, friends, or other figures is just realistic. It's not as if I'm the only Richard out there.
or aaaare you...?
Does anyone call ya dick?
There's a very common male name in my family that my dad, grandad and several cousins all share.
@@publiusventidiusbassus1232
I'm named for my grandfather, but one of my uncles is literally a junior of that grandfather, so I'm named for him too.

Not to mention all those Ghiscari names...
That has to be his sense of humor, especially considering the way those characters were introduced.
Or Alayaya, or those Ghiscari names that sound like you’re doing an impression of a bee.
Sansa and Arya are named after his Stark (in Arya's case her namesake Arya Flint married a Stark) ancestors too.
@@landofthehazymist in the family tree of starks in the world of ice and fire there is actually a couple of Arya's and Sansa's in the stark family tree. Great grandmother's and great aunt's. There's no congruency to her emoting. Hard to trust someone that presents that way on a first impression even if they're really not a bad person.
I think that in the interviewer's mind all eyes are on her.
Maybe he and the mother agreed beforehand
The Ty- thing isn’t super strong in the Lannister family. There’s, Jason, Gerion, Lancel, and Kevan Lannister. Also Jaime was a twin and I don’t think there are female Ty- named Lannisters.
And that's why Elden ring has Godrick, Godwin, Godfrey and Godefrey. Millicent, Malenia, Melina e Marika
Don't forget rykard, radagon, renny rannala, radahn
Ah yes. The Seaworths. A proud house of First Men origins. GTFO
I think seaworth was made for him by stannis. I may be wrong but I don't think Davos ever had two names as a smuggler, and after his aid at the siege at storms end Stannis named him a lord and since lords must have two names gave him the name seaworth.
Wait disregard that I didnt realize the lady said seaworth
@yung turt You are correct about all of the stuff you said in your first comment. Davos often refers to himself as “Davos of Flea Bottom” because he didn’t have a surname prior to becoming the Onion Knight and Stannis giving him his choice of a surname. He also is nicknamed Davos Halfhand.
It’s a strange situation, she didn’t get it, but she knew of Davos, who doesn’t appear till the second book

How to create a name in the ASOIAF universe: when not giving them normal names (Jon, Robert, Brandon, Gregor and so forth) simply take a common name and change two or three letters.
Edward = Eddard
Circe = Cersei
Jamie = Jaime
Jeffrey = Joffrey
Marcella = Myrcella
Thomas = Tommen
Kevin = Kevan
Peter = Petyr
Lance = Lancel
Stanley = Stannis
Samuel = Samwell
Ramsay = Ramsey
Margery = Margaery
Richard = Rickard, Rickon and Dickon
Benjamin (Benji) = Benjen
Darius = Daario
etc.
Is that starting to become obvious? Well, then just throw some randomly exotic names in the mix.
Michael Ciano Gartrell stannis is actually a real name which comes from the slavic name stannislaw

Wish you luck!
she's a good interviewer...she asked uncommon questions, deviating from questions George probably answered hundreds of times...and she interacts well.
