In regards to a good vocal warmup to get Ready To Sing.... "I'd rather be slightly embarrassed behind stage than humiliated on stage!" Another great tip form Mark Baxter! Thanks Mark!
Wow! Finally a vocal coach is verifying what I found out recently. I am a long distance runner and the very best way to warm up my body (and voice) is to run at least 2 miles, and then a little vocal warmup. There is nothing better for me, and I can feel the benefit for hours afterwards.
Yes your lessons help. I’m 67. I have a so so voice. All 5 brothers were blessed with great voices. As a kid, my mom would pop in when I would sing (cause I loved singing,) laughing and say you are off key and leave. She had a beautiful voice. When we sang in church, I’d ask if I sounded in key. She would tell me many times that she never heard me next to her. I was so heartbroken. She always bragged on the brothers. The family was traditionally men matter, women are to serve. So now I want to sing for me, to praise God. I so appreciate you.
many of the singers I work with have similar stories - including me with the way my father criticized my singing. It's unfortunate but we're adults now - so you can work to put it behind you. Sing for that little girl who wanted mom's approval!!
VERY USEFUL. I PERSONALLY WARM UP, VOCALIZE AND EVEN SING AN HOUR BEFORE THE SHOW. IF I HAVE TIME ENOUGH, I DO IT TWICE. IN THE MORNING OR EARLY AFTERNOON, LIGHTLY, SO MY VOICE IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE THROUGH THE DAY, AND THEN LONGER THE 2ND TIME. IT'S GIVEN ME GOOD RESULT. HOWEVER, JUST BEFORE STEPPING ON STAGE, I DIDN'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO WITH THE TENSION OF THE MOMENT AND THIS VIDEO'S GIVEN ME THE ANSWER. THANK YOU, MARK.
Super helpful, Maestro. I have been using your morning vocal warm ups consistently and working on my vocalizing (lips are still trembling and I haven't done any of them in front of the Eiffel Tower ... YET!), but this video right here really answers a question I had. I have to take a long train ride to my band practice, and even with hyrdating and the singing vocal warm up (and a scarf and ear muffs if it's windy) I find that by the time I get there (about 90 minutes later) I need something to bring my voice forth (that isn't the first half hour of practice). Thank you a million times over for your teaching and sharing.
What you saying here is truly valuable information. Everytime I came back from the gym(I usually just walk back). Whenever I did my warmups I felt a lot more R. T. S and whenever I skip gym it takes so much longer warming up to get to R. T. S. And I noticed that for me my heart rate needs to exceed atleast 130bpm and then I tap into R. T. S much quicker. I have been noticing these patterns on my own but now that you affirmed it, I can now permanently add getting my heart rate up to my warming up routine and so it can help me yield much better results in future. Thanks a lot for this.
your lessons always benefit for one who loved to sing (i try a lot to listen to you again and again both for learned to listen to English langauge too simultenously for how to be good at singing) would like to say thanks from bottom of my heart.
Mark, I bought your book about 6 years back and it resolved for me 20 years of frustration over my inconsistent singing ability. Your videos are like treasure. I feel like I should mail you a check.
Even though I have had the experience of being humiliated on stage more often than I would like including once again just this week, I still have trouble accepting that a good solid warm up and all its mundane and boring glory is a huge part of singing great on stage. Trouble, that is , being comfortable with the fact that i have to do it in order to perform. Or that I have to do it regardless of how ridiculous it can be. Sometimes I think many of the singers I know don't vocalize like I do, still I am the one who craps out from time to time. It can be very frustrating. I do have trouble at a traffic light when I think someone can see. How ridiculous is that? Like you say, better to be embarrassed back stage or on your way to a show than on stage. I must admit I don't always get physical enough before a warm up. This is great advice. It really isn't even near as silly as some of the sounds produced during a much needed warm up. Mark, you are really great. I think I need to get back in touch with you because I still have miles to go on this journey and I haven't got mastery over my voice yet. I have been using your videos in combination with things from our lessons and some of my own design. I hope to reconnect soon. Be well. Bye for now.
Thank u Mark for sharing strategy of how much preparation we do need before singing. I mostly do all that & teaching how student should be confidence& feels free before singing. Hi Mark, I just read your reply on the comment where the person said that he runs for like 2 miles before warming up and then it usually takes him few mins to warmup.l know 2 miles is too much he might be a professional runner , But what if we would just run for like 5-10 mins would that be as benifitial ???? I mean does it work for everyone??
I am a singer and a salsa dance instructor and although I always do a physical warm up for my dancing, I have never really thought about the heart racing, cardio benefit when singing! I shall certainly be giving this a go! Thanks x
Hey Mark!! I enjoyed another fun and successful eve tonight on stage, thanks to some of your many excellent tips and tricks o' the trade! Thanks for spreading your enthusiasm, so I (and others like me) can spread the Love! Rock on! Tim in Düsseldorf, Germany
Good stuff ,makes sense, I've always tried to implement some cardio & stretch exercise as well as some resistance too& feel ready to start vocal exercises vocal warm ups.
Not silly at all - perfect way to start every day. Have to warm up to exercise, of course, warming up to exercise the voice makes perfect sense too. Thanks again, Mark!!
Totally with you here...I DO feel self conscious even bout doin lip trills in my car cos I need to put my fingers either side of my cheeks to achieve this...but...fair point, I'm trying to get to the point where I don't care cos it is all about the voice and vocal performance. Another very informative video, many thanks.
2019 my goodness, here I am at 70 years old thinking something was "wrong" with my timing of when I was RTS - I also resented & didn't understand why I was so high maintenance vocally - while my best friend's voice didn't seem to need so much care - geez!! And also, I didn't move an inch from the mic & this is during the 60's music singing and disco!! Had an acting teacher just for that to help me get ready for an audition - which I never had to do seeing I had friends with bands. Anyway, first visit to her, I sang a song and she was, "you really have a good voice, but after 3 songs your going to be boring" and she said this with the most loving honest way because she loved what she did and called this moment of acting lessons ...a magic space" She told me exactly what is being said in this video. She told me when you get home move all over the place, if your right hand goes up and wiggles then your left arm goes, let's say behind your back, and even if you never ever make those big wild gestures your body memory will know it can go waaayyyy out there..I write this because there is that part of me that's still self-conscious. So, all of you EVERY video Mark makes is 100% right on the money!! : )
Hi Mark you are really doing a great work helping other singers!! I just wanted to know is there a difference between vocalizing and warming up?? I mean you talk alot about in your videos that we should vocalize regularly so what about warming up ???
Warming up is preparing to sing. Vocalizing is challenging your voice for deeper skills. The difference is your intention. You will get more from your voice if you do both!
@@voicelessondotcom so that means while vocalizing the intention should be better coordination for singing effortlessly right ???? 1) So what does it mean by preparing the voice ??? Aren't we doin it while vocalizing??? 2)I get it that we should warmup the body ( do the stretches) before singing but what is it mean to warmup the voice ???
How do i make all this work with wind up sensory syndromes? I am frustrated finding myself going backwards trying to relax. I can sometimes but it’s hard to know how to prevent bad habits given my tics don’t think I have a say. Like putting my fingers in my mouth as a spacer is now causing me almost instant spasticity due to me failing to recognise a fit coming on while practicing after last class… it was a big one too…and the association is now wired . Instead though I have not given up…I imagine I have a tender jelly bubble not pop in my mouth to relax but ….the minute I get too imaginey I , start to spasm …wherever im trying to gain control instead I am controlled by spasms …it’s doing my head in. 🫁🧠👅
