    So many stations closed on this line since I was a boy Killrane, Macmine Junction, Ferns, Camolin, Inch, Woodenbridge, Avoca. Gone but not forgotten.

    Fifty years ago enjoyed a great school holiday (as a teacher) staying in Bray. Main memories the hotel on the Prom (Cois Farrige), climbing Bray Head, train rides to Dublin and Greystones, Guiness Brewery, Glendalough, Avoca, Brittas Bay, and warming Irish Coffees as a night cap. This video brings it back. Thanks.

    Thumbs up. Refreshing to look at the video without having to endure pointless noise. Someone in Irish Rail made a good decision.

    Very good video.
    I see it was made at high tide, so the coastline appears much better.
    At low tide, only the passengers looking out from the sides would see the water.
    Also the weather was perfect - too sunny can cause glare and marks on the windscreen.
    Too cloudy makes everything look dark and gloomy.

    Appears calming due to the muted colors and diffused light. I wonder if what's calming in small doses might become depressing after a while.

      It kind of all comes together once you figure out the trackside signage etc. A tiny bit more foolproof than you'd expect it to be.

    Do you have any idea of a train going to those tracks on the left hand side, or is it just for construction?

    •  4 роки тому +2

      That's the line to Limerick. However train passenger service was closed in 2010 between Waterford and Rosslare.

  • @batlin

    Around 1:58:00 on the tracks from Greystones to Bray, I noticed two extra rails between the driving rails, ending in a sort of parenthesis shape. Just today I saw the same thing on the northbound platform at Grand Canal Dock. There was some kind of electrical grounding cable attaching one section to another. What is the function of those rails -- is it for detecting via an electric circuit that a train has passed from one section into another?

    • @PeterCDub
      @PeterCDub 3 роки тому +3

      They have nothing to do with signalling. They are known as "gathering rails" and are to keep a train running in line with the track in the event of a derailment. Whilst running line derailments are very rare, gathering rails are used where the consequences would be severe, such as the cliff edge on Bray Head. From looking at the video, I suspect that their purpose at GCD is to protect the very tall historic brick structure which is very close to the line. The electrical cables are just to ensure they are electrically bonded to the running rails which are used to carry return traction current on the electrified lines used by DART.

    did you just go and ask the driver if you could record it or did you have to get permission first? i was thinking of recording timelapses on some of the irish trains and uploading them to mapillary

    •  5 років тому

      I did get permission from Irish Rail. Maybe you should conctact media press office, they could help you.

    Are the speeds in miles or kilometres per hour? I know Ireland uses km's on its roads, so I would imagine the railways would also.

    • @steeviebops
      @steeviebops 2 роки тому

      Rail speed limits are still in miles. They never converted them to kilometres, for a closed system there wouldn't really be any benefit.
