    Welcome to my latest Udemy video! I've already done a few videos about my experiences on Udemy, and there are more to come! Today I thought I'd look into which of my courses have performed the worst. All of them have great content and the best of intentions but I've learnt a lot more about what sells on Udemy! I'm excited to pass on some of my top lessons to you and hopefully save you a lot of time. Thank you so much for watching, and of course don't forget to subscribe!

    ❤ FAQs:
    ↣ Are you a full time UA-camr?
    I work full time online as a 'Digital Nomad' which means I get to travel the world with my fiance (Ed) and not be tied to living in any specific country. I do Freelance PR, teach courses on Udemy (check out my profile here - www.udemy.com/u/louisecroft/) and of course blogging and UA-cam.
    ↣ What does Pauper To Princess mean?
    My passion is all about living like a fabulous Princess on a little Pauper budget. I visit beautiful countries, and buy fabulous clothes but I'm always looking for a way to save money and be thrifty!
    ↣ When did you start blogging?
    I created my blog in 2012 when I was living in America. I was thrifting so much that I wanted to start sharing my outfits online and inspiring other people to look in charity shops. Now it's become all about my Digital Nomad journey and what it's like to be a female nomad.
    ↣ Where's your accent from?
    I'm from the South of England but I currently live out of a suitcase travelling all over the world.
    ↣ Where is your favourite place in the world?
    I fell deeply in love with Gili Air when we visited as a paradise getaway, but Chiang Mai is my favourite place to live. Plus of course, there's no place like home (Dorset in England).

    After 2.5 years on Udemy, I randomly decided to make a course on English Literature as I have 2 degrees in English. It's 12 hours long and a truckload of work went into it and I was worried it was too academic for Udemy. That one course paid my way through the COVID lock down and cleared my credit card. To me the secret was using the marketplace tool to gauge popularity and demand. With 100k courses on Udemy it's hard to find a topic with high supply and lowish demand, but I did. I would also rather make a course in a crowded niche but go all out to make it good than make 10 courses which attract hardly anybody each. Udemy is now getting so crowded that I think you do need to carefully plan how you can make your course stand out, plus do what you did so well and build a reputation on UA-cam and Instagram so that people are interested in your personality and style.

    How do I know if the topic I want to teach is worth doing it? I know Brazilian Portuguese and I was thinking that as an idea but when I searched on Udemy there isn't a whole lot of courses on this which can be a good sign or bad sign. I don't know if it would be something worth investing my time. I don't have many other ideas at this point but I am attracted to the idea of a passive income.

    • @digitalnomadgirl
      @digitalnomadgirl  6 років тому

      Hey! Udemy has a search tool for instructors which will show you the search volumes on each topic. It's super helpful!
      A lot of courses is definitely a good sign - but only if you can be on page one. You'll need a high quality course, smart key word stuffing, and a bunch of reviews from facebook groups etc with people in who want to learn your topic.
      Hope that helps!

    Yup! Market research and product development are critical to creating content and products with the audience or customer in mind. It may not always be something you're particularly interested in. Falls in line with one of the general rules I have, which is to keep my money and passions separate. A few very lucky people have passions which lead to financial reward. But, trying to turn your passions into income isn't always feasible. Focusing on creating income streams of any type which are lucrative and flexible enough to allow you to pursue your passions, should be the ultimate goal. There will always be mistakes and failures. Those are just part of being successful. Cheers on another great installment! 😉

    • @digitalnomadgirl
      @digitalnomadgirl  7 років тому

      Yes 100% true about keeping passions and money separate. I have been so enthused and excited about how passionate these experts are that I lost sight of how viable the course was. Ever since you asked me about what a course needs to make for a decent hourly wage I've been relaying that to people! Really bring it home that to make $400 a month you need to be signing up 80 new students every month! Really helps people see the reality. So thanks for always giving me great food for thought!!

  • @KentVorkink
    @KentVorkink 7 років тому +1

    Enjoyed the video and others on your channel. You have that great combination of intelligence, charm, and an attractive appearance. Which brings up my first question: How necessary are those traits when producing video content for a successful UA-cam channel or Udemy course? Also, have you purchased courses on Udemy? Thanks!

    • @digitalnomadgirl
      @digitalnomadgirl  7 років тому

      Hi Kent. Well thanks so much! :D
      So.... yes I have bought a bunch of courses on Udemy. It's super cheap and gives you plenty of previews to check that the course is for you. I've taken photography, Amazon Kindle, productivity, juice cleansing, affiliate marketing, and of course a bunch about Udemy itself. The quality varies so you need to check out the course in detail before you take it, but I've learnt a ton :)
      And finally, I think charm and intelligence are always important for being likeable and trustworthy as a teacher. However, I think attractiveness can be a mixed blessing! The image is more likely to get clicked... but it's harder to build gravitas and respect for subjects like money or business. So I guess it depends on the course topic! If you're teaching mechanics or photography then I doubt it matters at all, but if you're teaching makeup or blogging like me then it probably matters more!
      Does that help? Are you considering teaching?

    A major mistake Instructors make is that students enrol to actually watch the lectures. They don’t. About 85% never watch anything . About 5% fast forward to get the completion Certificate. The remainder watch about 2 minutes each week. Therefore: forget content. Get a photogenic, animated presenter; use AI or Wikipedia or just make it up for script. Then you have a course! Look at courses with 15,000 enrolments but Q/A is empty. No-one is engaged!

    I think courses made in a language other than English would have much-limited audience, the reason would be that not many people around the world are aware that there are courses in their language available in Udemy , and this in itself creates a problem elsewhere since not so much sites like Udemy offer courses in languages other than in English ...

    • @digitalnomadgirl
      @digitalnomadgirl  6 років тому

      Hey. I'm not sure to be honest... But I do know that Udemy paid for some of my courses to be translated into Russian! So there must be some demand as it was quite a hefty investment for them. Presumably Spanish is a huge audience too :) if you chose a big and proven market like Photography I think you could do very well :)

    • @swilhelm3180

      If I was learning English I'd definitely try to learn a cultured London accent. Nothing like it in the world. But if you're not living there it might be difficult to maintain. Imagine learning the basics in that accent, then moving to Boston or Brooklyn where the decimation of the English language is an art form. Much like how Quebec tramples the elegant and refined French language so beautifully enunciated in France. One does wonder why people seem to willingly brutalize a language. Why would any sane person actually want to talk with a traditional New York accent? What's ironic is New Yorkers, as they move up the ladder, seek to flush that accent as much as they can. Listen to news broadcasts from New York City. You'll never hear that accent from their own city from the lead people. I bet many people go to particular universities to eradicate their Brooklyn/New York accent. As soon as people hear that they stereotype them into their category of the brash, uncultured, uneducated, unread, common, loud and abusive pain to be around people they avoid at all costs. Its not fair and its not right but it sure happens every day there.

      Hi! Don't get too discouraged - I know someone who makes a lot of money from baking videos - so they don't necessarily have to be business related. If you sign up for an instructor account (free) then you can look at the stats Udemy provide about each search topic. I just watched/listened to a Spanish Udemy course. It was absurd. An Indian accented woman is trying to speak English making lots of distracting grammatical/pronounciation errors. Then she speaks Spanish with her accent which sounds wrong. Can they not hire a native Spanish person to actually speak Spanish? This is like language-fishing. So often I find stuff from India such poor quality. They're like the slime of the internet, always promising the world and almost never delivering anything useful. Is it their education system in India? Is it cultural where they, like much of China, are just thinking of profit today with no thought of building their brand's reputation so their business flourishes tomorrow? I don't understand this because Indians I meet who are educated in western countries are very bright and absorb and process information very well, much better than local people on average. India really needs to get its act together.

    I love your videos except one thing - the punching sound that you add in. It actually makes me stop watching the videos sometimes because it hurts my sensitive ears, and feels violent... Aaah, I need to close the video now insted of watching it to the end.

      Hiya! I've actually stopped using it in more recent videos because I felt the same :) Thanks for the thought! You live and learn :)

      That's great to know! I started following the channel but haven't watched so many of the new videos - more browsed trough the older ones. Just having my first udemy course reviewed so thanks a lot for all the advice :)

    The majority of the so called instructors on udemy can't even string a sentence together let alone their accent. It's a joke!!!!!!!

    Friendly tip, Digital Nomad Girl: Try to use fewer hand gestures when speaking. They're very distracting and make you look less poised.
