In a coaching career spanning more than two decades, José Gomes has managed teams including Rio Ave and Maritimo in his native Portugal, Almeria in Spain and Reading in the Championship. In a session delivered exclusively for CV Academy, he presents a detailed match-preparation that he used during his time at Reading. Setting his own team up in a 1-4-3-3 formation, Gomes works on defensive organisation and effective attacking transition against a side playing in a 1-5-2-3.
In this excerpt from the first practice in the session, he trains both defensive and offensive organisation for his 4-3-3, with the aim of finding spaces in behind the opposition’s defence while not allowing them in behind his own back four.
