@Tony-c7z9t I must admit Tony I was so used to having the telly on in the background that when I stopped watching it all at first it was odd, the house was too quiet. But it was the start of a huge change in my views on politics & social issues, I now realise that even without actively watching tv you're absorbing the propaganda both social & political. No wonder "they" don't want things to change.
These days I watch UA-cam & films from my PC and I not only don't miss tv, I actively regret the years I sat there paying to brainwash myself.

From 1987 to 1996 I didn't watch any television at all, I listened to music, played my guitar and read books in my spare time.
I used to get visits all the time from the TV licence people, they could not believe that I did not own or watch a television, it was almost as if watching television was mandatory.
I again stopped watching broadcast television about four years ago and informed the Licence people, they have started sending me letters informing me I need a licence to watch live television despite me opting out!
I have a similar experience. In the late 80s, in allowing an attractive licensing 'officer' to check, I could have been making a mistake, except I had no TV, only a couple of PCs for study and work, my HiFi and bikes. I spent most of my money on bikes, and had no urge for a TV. After all, with a 1,000 cc motorcycle, a 750 and a 650 who needs TV? She was very scrumptious though, the TV officer. 😎
Why did you inform them you had stopped watching TV? If you went to your local cop shop to tell them you don't need a firearms licence it would arouse suspicion or you'd get warned regarding wasting police time. There is absolutely no need to declare to any licensing authority that you don't need a licence - or to respond to their communications.
Only five in Bradford, well the license sellers won't go into the no go zones will they.

@kevinthegerbil2708 Every licence investigator who has knocked at my door has been female with some form of book or board. Each attempted to highlight the outcome of non-compliance, before the door was shut in their faces.
They ensure that they don't demand money with menaces. They only WARN of the consequences. If they did demand money with menaces it would be a criminal offence.
Anybody caught paying the T.V. Licence should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting P****S in my opinion.

That's the first step. Decriminalise. Then add it on as a mandatory tax. They never tell you about the second part.
They will probably add it to the persons over burdened council tax debt, even if you dont own a TV.

It's unfair to pay a tax for something I don't use. That would be like asking me to pay road tax even though I don't own a vehicle.

As long as they can continue to extort money out of people, the licence will remain, regardless of any debates to be had by anyone. The only time it will go away is when the tipping point is reached. And that is when so few people are paying it, it becomes unviable.
At that point they will add it to council tax 😞

Just cancelled it this week as I mainly watch youtube, WWE Network, 4OD'S catch up section blu ray's/DVD'S and listen to the radio, after BBC have crapped all over doctor who i have Barley watched BBC in ages

Funny, I just talked about that... And yeah, Thats the issue for all of us I think, We woudl not care if a Media Tax paid for the Infrastructure and ensured EVERY HOME could get a Broadband Connection if it wanted one... For the New FREELY idea to work, They need to provide every home with a Baseline Broadband Connection as Freely is a Streaming Service... The idea being to make FREEVIEW part of Freely, but you cannot do that without every home at least having a Basic Internet Connection.. Something they can plug their TV into to at least Watch TV!
And FREELY is something that Tax Payers are also funding I believe... Its not owned by an independent company... I dont feel we would mind paying a Tax to make sure everyone could receive TV if they wanted it...
BUT WE DONT LIKE PAYING THE BBC ... AND WATCHING THEM WASTE OUR MONEY WHILE PLEADING POVERTY!

Making having a TV licence a civil matter will make it easier to force you to pay the TV tax. The burden of proof for a civil prosecution is lower that the criminal prosecution required now. The license needs to be abolished.

Personally I think they make all the laws so ambiguous so most people haven’t got a clue.
The last thing the legal and judicial professions want is laws that are actually clear to the average person.

I only had a tv licence at my house because my granddad lived with me and got a free one. Only BBC program I watched was top gear and I stopped watching that when Clarkson, Hammond and May left, and aside from top gear I stopped watching live TV before that. I work for the ambulance service, so watching live TV at regular times is a laughable idea. So when my granddad passed away I declared no license needed. I'm not paying £150 a year for what is the worst subscription service available.

Making it a civil offense makes it easier to prosecute ... The burden of proof is much lower and loser can pay massive costs
It would work so long as people go to court and defend themselves. It's like those debt companies they rely on people not going to court and secure a judgement that way.

P.S. the uk address is actually only the letter box in your front door which is labelled a postage ‘venue’….in fact it’s the negative space inside the letterbox slit that gives them entrance into your private domain….like a parasitic portal site to enter, lol! True! 🤷🏼♀️
@@trappedinroom1014 yeah i know its corrupt and that's why people must go to court when given a date. Doing so will stop it at the court and the only way to stop them in their tracks. If a court date is missed for what ever reason they can always have a judgement set aside aswell.

We watch our Dvds Netflix and prime and UA-cam.. That's it nothing live.. TV not worth watching.. Iv had letters iv had 2 visits but I don't answer the door... Thankyou again for all you do

The only worry I have is that these Commie's currently in charge turn the licence into a new tax. I haven't had a T.V. for over 40 years but I still get the threatening letters saying that I'm going to have a visit from their bruisers. For the 3rd time yesterday I wasted a day waiting for them to come and visit me. At my age, on the way to 80, I can't afford to waste any days. I do wonder whether I aught to charge them for my time wasted waiting for them at a rate which is worth it. I think that a free T.V. licence every year until I snuff it would be a fair charge, that might even encourage me to buy a T.V. and stultify my brain watching the modern rubbish on B.B.C.

Last week, I received a "will you be in on Nov 7th..." letter. But today, Oct 31, I received a hand delivered "we called but you were out..." letter. Strange. I checked the doorbell camera. No attempt was made to ring the bell or to knock. But as the "officer" posted his stupid letter, he could be heard, I believe, talking into a recording device with observations of my property. As he left, he turned and took a photograph of my home. With my wife and children in it. So this letter was simply a means to get close enough to surveil my home. Again, WITH MY WIFE AND CHILDREN IN IT!
To make up the confiscation of thee Pensioner Fuel allowance, we have cancelled the BBC along with several Charities. RNLI , The3 Royal Yachting Assn., and we are going to cancel a payment to the National Trust just to pay thye Gas Bill which has more or less doubled.
You might want to stop buyng poppies as well, given that the Royal British Legion are employing a Head of Diversity at £80K a year.

Just filled out the no licence needed for my third year. Seems they ask every 12 months now, more pressure ! I wasn't going to bother this time, but in those 3 years I've had no threatening letters of visits, so thought I would do it for another year. I did put my name down as Present Occupier though. 🤣

After 18 months, and after politely informing them I no longer needed to pay the TV Tax, am now on my 2nd round of threatening, harrassing, Mafia type letters.
Still not had a visit despite the threats.
Don't bother telling them, just cancel payment, they will send the threatening letters whether you tell them or not so why waste your time.
Could,Would,Should. Decriminalising the TV Licence Fee is a better way to go than abolishing the fee as the alternative is a media TAX that everybody pays whether they watch live TV or not. The way to go is education to people that they don't need one to watch/record live TV.
A couple of weeks ago the government published, "The future of the BBC licence fee", that's probably why that article is the Birmingham Mail.
Regarding the legislation:
it states that a television receiver is installed or used for the purpose of receiving any television programme service[live TV]...
So if it's installed for the purpose of streaming catch up content, that's fine.
If the licence was abolished we wouldn't be reading this BS !!

People think decriminalising the TV tax is a good thing - think again, it isn't! The civil law set by the parking firms means they can now levy a reasonable fee for the detection and charging of an infringer. Fines for parking are £30 but private charges are more than double that.
That's why it's a bad idea and it's probably why Labour find it attractive.

I lived in a house that had been converted into flats in the 80s, the goons would knock at the front door ring all the door bells at least once a month this was constant from 04 to 2016, amazingly i never heard a resident having conversion with them unless it was while i was out. But the letters would keep coming through the post but with flat numbers that didn't correspond to the address ,has if tv licenceing made them up
i had a sailing holiday to malden then back again when i was at school , many years ago now ,, it was great fun ,they sit so low in the water they dont roll around , so no sea sickness.😁👍

The 'installed or used' wording is to be found in Section 363(1) of the Communications Act 2003.
However, to properly understand the position one must ALSO look at Part 3 of The Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004.
'Definitions for the purposes of the Communications Act 2003 and the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967'
Specifically Section 9 (as amended). 9(1) covers the meaning of 'television receiver'. 9(3) covers the 'live' broadcast element.
The MSM consistently trots out the Section 363 wording and omits the later Regulations. Swallowing whole the misleading BBC PR propaganda.

It's not a criminal offence to own a TV and you don't need a TV licence to do so, but you do if you watch any live broadcasts.
You can have a TV without a TV licence if you don't watch any live broadcasts or play games watch DVDs listen to CDs or radio.
The criminal part of watching TV without a TV licence is if you are taken to court, the court fines you and you fail to pay the fine.

Why is no one, including yourself ChilliJonCarne, talking about the changes to the TV Decloration Licence form? It used to be renewed once every two years, but now it's going to be every 12 months, starting this October time of 2024. This new change to the TV Licensing Decloration form seems to have gone unnoticed by yourself ChilliJonCarne.

Why is no one talking about this new change that did happen itself then to the TV Decloration licence itself then moving forwards this year then itself for October time of 2024.
no one themselves from the TV licence themselves told people themselves full stop this was going to change after renewing the TV Decloration licence themselves to yourselves from 2023 from once every 2 years to once every 12 months starting from this year October time of 2024.
Chilli Jon, I either want it scrapped or leave it as it is because I can see them putting it onto general taxes in some form so then we won't have a choice to not pay it...I think we need to be careful what we wish for as the old saying goes! They won’t allow their propaganda mouth piece to close due to lack of funds. They will make it a mandatory tax, either by altering the law so that ownership of a TV requires a licence or tacking the licence fee on the council tax.
Don't bother decriminalising it just scrap it and force the bbc to stand on their own 2 feet.
