Buying a Used Car - Part 1: Exterior Inspection

  • Are you looking for a used vehicle?
    Part 1 takes you through a step by step tutorial on how to inspect the exterior of a potential used vehicle to assess its condition and tell if it has been in any previous accidents.
    Past collision damage is important to determine because it could lead to issues such as peeling paint, rust formation or worse, be structurally unsafe for road use because of major frame damage. It may reveal signs of the vehicle's past owners and can also be used as a negotiating tool when bargaining the price of a used vehicle.
    The video takes a look at checking panel gaps for alignment, feeling the paint texture for blemishes and mismatches, detecting over-spray in hidden areas, looking at body panel waviness and alignment, looking for rust and frame damage, checking VIN stamps and OEM stickers, as well as inspecting doors, hood and trunk for proper functionality.
    Buying a used vehicle can be one of the largest purchases you make in your life. Significant savings can be had by purchasing a used car over a new car, however don't neglect to inspect the vehicle thoroughly in order to avoid significant headaches down the road.
    This six part used vehicle buying guide covers:
    1) Exterior inspection
    2) Mechanical Inspection
    3) Interior Inspection
    4) Road Test
    5) The Paperwork & Procedures
    6) After You Buy
    This video was shot with a Canon Rebel EOS T5i DSLR and a Canon PowerShot SX130IS camera.

    As a used car salesman, these are the things I look for paintwork:
    - tape lines
    - paint worn off bolts from a socket
    - dirt or water in the paint (most difficult for average person to see)

    Junk yards sell OEM headlight and tail lights so dont assume anything on a front or rear accident. Also, a hood is usually removed on the car if the engine was pulled for any reason. That leads to misaligned hood lines. Our 2010 Forester had been involved in an accident and the dealer NEVER gave us a carfax report on it. We got full trade in value for the car anyways simply because it was a Subaru. In my neck of the woods, Subarus retain their resale value.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  9 років тому

      +KingofKong Yes, its good to know that the mileage you see on the odometer are highway miles, hence the extra wear on the body.

    I'd recommend checking the suspension tower and the susp. strut, as well as engine mountings for any defects and signs of welding and rust.
    The suspension tower is a thick part made by layers of sheet metal, which makes it impossible to weld or repair if the suspension broke through it or it simply cracked because of the misuse and lack of care for the car.
    The suspension towers as well as the engine mountings and beams are crucial to the car running safely without falling apart, and it's an obligation to check them as well if you've got the chance to pop the hood.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  10 років тому

      Very good points. Usually a body shop would cut the damaged section of a strut tower out and weld in a new one rather than straighten the old one. They'd never get it to align to factory specs and the car will wear through tires for the rest of its life, never mind be structurally unsafe.
      However inspecting exterior body of the car first might clue you into major frame work, especially if you see shoddy paint work and panels that are misaligned.

    • @scottfirman
      @scottfirman 5 років тому

      Not misuse, rot. I have seen Fords with Shock towers that rotted right out. Also seen a few with busted sub frames. My daughter bought a car with a rusted out shock tower. It made me mad to see it. The rest of the car looked fine. There was no way to fix that eather.The car ended up in the scrap. The lady that sold the car knew it and kept her mouth shut.

    speedkar99 do you think this video series could apply to classic cars?

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  9 років тому

      Somewhat. Classics have their own lists of things to look for, such as serious modifications or if its been restored. People buy classics because its a rare or one off car that they have a strong passion for, not like a production car where you can avoid a used car lemon.

      Yes. Repainting a car opens up chances that it wasn't done properly, causing it to flake and rust later down the road.

      I bought this car used with an accident history. Black paint hides a lot of blemishes so the car looks in much better shape in person without me pointing out every scratch.
      The paint job is holding up okay (compared to a lot worse I've seen quick cash jobs done), its just that clear-coat blend they tried to do on the roof looks pretty bad. Your supposed to clear the entire panel of the car, and not blend it like you do with paint.
