  • This video explores the basics of Guatemalan history and politics to explain why it is that Guatemala's history has been one of trauma and upheaval, why its moments of hope like the Guatemalan Revolution failed and why its democracy remains fragile. It begins with the Maya and Spanish colonization and ends with the disaster of the Jimmy Morales Presidency. It covers the decades of guerrilla warfare and the 1954 coup under Castillo Armas.

My mom was telling me about Rios Montt and how things were during his time. My dad is 30 years older than my mom so he remembers how things were in the 50s. He has been typing stories. It's the timelines I'm trying to help him with since he's 90. Your video was helpful

Amazing video! I'm traveling in Guatemala right now and am floored by how warm and welcoming its people are despite nearly a century of rulers who are almost all corrupt, with no care for their people

Man, Guatemala 🇬🇹 leaders have rarely been good for the people. Very heavy handed leadership against the best interests of the people. Very unfortunate. Leaders are at times extremely selfish

Sadly, when their leaders tried to be good to the people, ironically, the US stepped in to prevent that from happening what caused social instability for many years to come, and the remnants are still felt today.

Blame the "activists" who were actually communist. Blame the United fruit company and their greed. Without either one of them Guatemala would have been better off. Assuming the cia would have stayed out

Thank you for covering a lot, clearly and accurately, in 20 minutes. I plan to watch other videos in the series. And I hope that the U.S. will shift from policies of empire that have helped enable corruption, exploitation and violence--supporting the return of CICIG would be a good start. The people of Guatemala have set an example of resistance, especially since 2015 and deserve better.
One detail: Former President Berger's heritage is French, not German, so his surname is pronounced [Bear ZHAY].

Thank you for that Helen. And Thank you for watching. I agree about CICIG as I think most Guatemalans do.

The Guatemalan Map without is territory of Belice??. Is so rich and beautiful the United Kingdom of Guatemala established since 1609 and that extends from El Soconusco (today Chiapas) to part of Panama. Guatemala is 12th producer of silver in the world and 20th producer of gold besides having massive reserves of nickel, jade and so many other natural resources too bad for almost a century big foreign anglosaxon multinational corporations have been taking almost everything. Long live Juan Santamaria the heroe of Costa Rica who died in battle against the english pirates. The Malvinas belong to Argentina, The Esequibo belongs to Venezuela and Belice belongs to Guatemala. God bless

Do you have any books that were translated from Spanish to English about guatemalan politics after the Civil War. I'm tried of conservatives from Latin America saying that socialism ruined it when clearly in countries like guatemala, my people suffered from mostly conservative and fascist governments.

Many times, historical facts, as one analyzes them, surprising connections are discovered. The illustrious Gabino Crispin Gainza Fernandez de Medrano was the last ruler of the Central American region, representing the King of Spain, Ferdinand VII. He declared independence of the Kingdom of Guatemala on September 15, 1821. He immedietly became the first Head of State of those young independent Central American republics (jefe politico).

You'll hate this comment: the underlying problem with latin America is its Roman Catholic roots. They have no interest in government. And that's a legacy from having a pope.
But it is not just Catholics. Any country with a predominate religious character has this problem.
Frankly the best hope for Guatemala s people is to leave.

@@JohnSmith-li6mnas a Centralamerican i SOMEWHAT agree, the US influence has been disastrous to our region specially TO Nicaragua due to the canal (way before Sandinistas even came to power) that never came to be and to the world. HOWEVER, for the other C.A. countries it has been our elites the 1# problem, they were the ones who decided to give concessions to american big business and who continue until to day (not only to americans), while having high taxes and regulations for everyone else, resembling a socialist system, at the end the problem is local, luckily is not over for us, judging by the Salvadoran case.
