"We just arrived in town after a week long of recordings in Konya amongst Sufis, and the name of Çaglar already resonated two times - 'a special recommandation' from two differents friends. You don't hesitate much when it happens, and we organized a little film with Çaglar at Nick's house, overlooking the neighbourhood of Cihangir and the Bosphorus in the back. The magnificence of Istanbul...
Çaglar took his qanun in the cold december wind, the light was falling with grace at this time of the day. Seagulls were flying around us, one take only, frozen hands. We got in for a second song, this time a cover of legendary Aleko Bacanos, a loving melody to bring along our next adventures."

Petites Planètes is an ongoing project comprised of films, music recordings, cinema performances, and immersive installations.
An independent production company created by french artists Priscilla Telmon and Vincent Moon, Collection Petites Planètes' aim is to explore the boundaries between cinema, music, and expanded forms of modern rituals. Our vision moves between the realms of documentary creation, ethnographic research, and filmic experimentation.

If I may add a little information...
The note in description means that the first piece is taken from the mid-17th century musical anthology of Ali Ufki _aka_ Wojciech Bobowski. Supposedly, as teenager, he was captured during regular raids of Crimean Tatar cavalry (natural allies of Ottomans) into Polish territories and eventually brought to Istanbul where he studied in the Ottoman court school, mainly on language and music. (His skills and knowledge must have been recognized immediately. Otherwise, direct admission into court school would not be possible.) He served as translator/interpreter and musician at the court. Arguably, his most remarkable work is the musical anthology, "Mecmua-i Saz u Söz", which collects music of his time in _western_ notation. These pieces would have easily gone forgotten, because notation did not take root in Ottoman tradition. --- The song is titled _"the dance performed in the presence of Sultan Ibrahim"._ Ibrahim's reign is 1640-48. --- On the same line, about 50 years after Ali Ufki, Dimitrie Cantemir collected musical works that survived to his time, in _abjad_ (Tr., ebced) notation. Cantemir was a Moldavian prince who (as privileged hostage or envoy) lived in Istanbul for 20+ years, in close relation to Ottoman court. Due to high status, his colourful life story is better known than Ufki's and the range of his intellectual activity is even wider. --- For recorded pieces from both anthologies, I'd recommend to browse discographies of ensembles Bezmara and Sarband, among others.
The second song in the video goes _"come ashore, delicate mermaid, have some wine"._ The mermaid in question is Eftalya Işılay _nee_ Athanasia Georgiadou, 1891-1939. As a child, accompanied by her father, she came to fame by singing at moonlit rowboat promenades around Büyükdere (upper Bosphorus) and nicknamed as such. As professional singer, she became a star of the gramophone era. --- Specifically, this song was dedicated to Eftalya the Mermaid. (Before or after her untimely death, I do not know.) Coming from a musical family, Aleko Bacanos and his younger brother Yorgo were popular, distinguished multi-instrumentalists and composers.
