The Big Bear area got up to 9 feet of snow since Feb 22. Both eagle live cams were impacted and remained offline until today. The solar panels might still have a bit of snow on them, but it will hopefully melt quickly enough.
Eagles prefer to sleep standing up, perched on branches. They sleep on the nets when they are broody enough and when there are eggs to incubate. It appears Shadow is a bit torn between the appealing Roost Tree and the eggs...

I think we know that it doesn't matter if he stays or goes, as the eggs are not going to hatch. But he is so stalwart, he just doesn't want to give up and we love him for it. I continue to be in awe of the character of these regal birds. Thanks for another bittersweet video, Cali.

@@hermi8918 Yes, unfortunately. They were expected to hatch around 2/15 to 2/20, I believe. Jackie and Shadow may continue to incubate off and on for another week or so and then withdraw.
Wow, I'm so sad for him. Shadow has always worn his heart on his wing. He's such a tender dad, even though in his heart he knows there will be no babies this season he still takes such care moving his feet around the eggs.
Jackie always accepts this loss quicker than Shadow. 💔🦅🦅

He drew me in when he refused to give up on his eggs 2 seasons before his little miracle Spirit hatched beneath him. I believe that God gave him that gift. Dear Shadow, you are a gift to this world. This is so sad, I have been watching these two for a long time I know the eggs won't hatch they have been there to long. Jackie and Shadow will do this again with 3 beautiful eaglets, Let's Waite and see. 😂😢😊 ❤ We all Love you both.

This is a sad loss for the pair but I'm thankful we still have them. Many nests sadly lost at least one mate this year, so I'm just glad we still have both Jackie and Shadow which means there is still hope for a future clutch

Thanks for the update Cali. I think shadow will be pretty much done by Monday as long as Jacky stays away. I just watched a video of all the snow on the ground at Big Bear, I saw the wild donkeys walking down the road it must be hard on all the wild animals and I am sure a lot of people are struggling also.
🥺 I literally choked up watching this. I am WAY too in love with these two. No matter how hard I try not to anthropomorphize them, it’s just not possible for me.

I'm a new Comer to this channel. I am in love with these two beautiful birds. Also at the same time sad for them that their eggs didn't hatch. I'm learning so much from these two. Prayers that the next batch they have succeed.
This is heart breakingly sad. He did this last season, hoping against hope that the second egg would hatch. And now he is struggling with 2 eggs that are way past pip time Poor Shadow, he's such a good dad and my heart breaks for him. Where is Jackie? Has she accepted the fact that her eggs were likely not fertile.
It's a bit worrisome that he would fly out this late at night. Shadow's chortle is so distinctive, but no response from Jackie.

@@Arieskie I am aware that Shadow can see. However, eagles being the supreme masters of the raptor world, the one thing that is not very sharp for them is their ability to see at night. Their vision is much like humans in the dark of night. It gets very, very dark in the mountains at night. There are owls in this area and owls fly like stealth bombers without a sound and have very keen vision at night. That is why I made that statement.
This season 2023 is terrible for Gabby who lost Samson, for M 15 who lost Harriet and now Shadow and Jackie's eggs 😪
Keep in mind 1000s of successful hatching this year that we didn't watch. Eagle population is thriving. Next year will be better for eagle cams.
Heartbreaking to see Shadow coming to terms with their obvious loss. His whole demeanor has changed from hopeful to sadness. What beautiful, caring, wonderful creatures they both are. Thank you to FOBBV for allowing the world to experience their world ❤❤

From 23:20 to 23:23 on Cam 2 Shadow wakes up, stands up, stretches, calls out, then makes his way down to the front porch and flies to the roost tree. The eggs have been left alone ever since. It’s a somber and poignant moment for anyone who watches this nest. Time to move on.

I love the beauty and strength of these magnificent birds but I to soft hearted to watch what is happening with Shadow and Jackie. I know this is nature but sometimes Nature stinks ☹
This is why I can't watch nature documentaries where predator/prey is involved. When these two bring back something that's already dead, I'm okay with it, but I'd never be able to watch them doing it! I never understood how nature photographers could stand there and film animals being taken down... And don't get me wrong, the predators have to eat too, and I'm not condemning that! But I would fail on my first day as a photographer, because I'd be the one standing up and screaming "HEY! YOU BACK OFF THAT GAZELLE!" lol 😅

Thanks for the info. This is my first mating season watching and it’s been an emotional roller coaster. But, I am quite fascinated by them both and all I’m learning. I hope she’s okay. I happened to find the SWFL eagles and was sad to know Harriet hasn’t returned. Boy, this is tougher than I thought. Hats off to those who are invested in the eagles full time. They must have nerves of steel. God bless them!

Can someone tell me why the eggs are not going to hatch and also where is Jackie? I skimmed through the entire feed for the day, nobody came through, the eggs were left unattended for a long time.
The way he looks at his eggs, doesn’t believe they are not going to hatch. He is such a devoted Dad.
So glad eagles operate on instinct, instead of emotions. It will be interesting to see if Shadow hangs on as long as he did the last time the eggs did not pip. Jackie moves on more quickly it seems
shadow is the coolest.. how can i package his personality and dedication and love for sticks (?) and put that into a human being ? h'es just super scrumptious and jackie couldn't be more of a kind sweetie . their coupledom relationship absolutely stole my heart ..i do hope maybe there is enough time for another clutch .. ? they were caught during the solar flares doing things that make eaglets .. so maybe she will be having time yet for another one... they'll be together .. so darling

The eggs were 2 weeks overdue 😔....Sadly not this batch. Jackie and Shadow surely persevered through the harsh winter.

Why would he go?!
Being "broody" is a hormonal thing. I'm not a biologist, so the best example I can give to you might not be totally accurate. But think about breast-feeding with mammal moms. They start lactating when the baby is born, and at some point as the baby gets older, lactation stops. Likewise, since these eggs aren't viable and haven't hatched, I imagine those broody hormones have waned, and so neither eagle is as willing to spend all their time incubating.
On a similar note, lots of people watching these guys were making comments about how these two "knew" their eggs weren't viable, and that's why they left the nest so much a few weeks ago. But even though they're not the same animal, consider this: when a hen (chicken) is broody, you can put wooden eggs under her and she'll incubate and guard them as if they were real. It's all hormonal.
