Shadow always gets down to business as soon as he sees Jackie on the horizon. Eagle eyes!
He lies down to show Jackie that is he could lay an egg - he would! Jackie takes notes from the front porch.
Jackie and Shadow's unhatched eggs were scavenged by Ravens on 3/7.
Both eggs appeared undeveloped: either they were not fertilized or development stopped very early on. There is no way to determine that an egg is unfertilized without breaking it (and the law!).
Resident male: Shadow (unbanded) since May 2018. Estimated hatch year: 2014

Poor Shadow, he so wants to be a papa again. And I do believe he would lay the eggs if he could. Time will tell if Jackie is able to lay more eggs but we sure can hope for two more. Jackie needs to remember that Shadow is the stickman and he knows just where to put those sticks. Thanks for a heart tugging video, Cali.
Shadow, is so clucky, he so wants chicks so he can look after his family. He wants to fuss over Jackie bring her dinner & take turns feeding chicks. I’ve got everything crossed for Jackie & Shadow. 🥰🇦🇺

Architects draw stuff, Engineers are the ones who lay out the plan of how the f$ck they're going to execute the crazy Architect's design and the workers make some drawings and measurements into the physical structure. So it's safe to say that these birds are severely underpaid.

These two do have the best nest. It is so perfectly round with really good side rails. The side rails are so important for the eaglets. I believe they laid their eggs too early this year, and because they still have snow they believe they have time for another clutch. My guess is that they are trying, but it is happening off camera.

Seeing Shadow in the nest bowl melted my heart. I just found out about these two beautiful eagles toward the end of their first clutch in February and I’ve been hooked on them since. ❤ I hope J & S are able to have another clutch with healthy eaglets this season.

It would have been the perfect time to give them some eaglets that needed to be fostered. Idk if I have seen any that have been removed from their nest recently.

Neither rain, nor snow nor hail nor unruly sticks will keep Shadow from his mission. He’s being so industrious.
Shadow does really seem to be getting into the spirit of things, arranging the nest, etc.hoping for another chance a a family this year. The wind is brutal.

Yes! Usually the only way I can tell them apart is by their behavior…when I see one obsessing over sticks moving them about here and there, I say “yup, that’s definitely Shadow!” 😄

I watch the SWFL nest with E-21 and E-22.M-15 is raising the E's by himself after the disappearance of Mama Harriet.and what a fantastic job he is doing.

Do developing eggs generate their own heat as the embryo grows into a chick? And if so, did Jackie nitice the lack of increased warmth as a cue to them not hatching? Just occured to me and wondered. Tks.
Great question! Developed embryo has its own metabolism. Paretns can feel movement inside eggs by the end of the incubation period and hear vocalizations after the chick pips internally (breaks into the air cell). It is unclear if Jackie and Shadow can count days however. Would they know when they should "expect" to feel/hear anything? That's a big question!

Jackie and Shadow fledged Simba in 2019 and Spirit in 2022.
