When my brother died I visited his grave every week for two years. I clipped the lawn, arranged the flowers, and laid down on the lawn beside or on top of his grave. I even began to know other loved ones who visited their loved ones' grave sites at the cemetery. There were picnics, music, and celebrations. It was the best grief processing I knew.
It's been 30 years since my mom died. Cancer, too early. And after all this time I can still feel the wave of grief hitting me. Tries to pull me out into the deep water. Have to keep my head up and fight.
The way that these conversations about grief can be both super personal for each guest, yet equally relatable is so powerful. I am such an admirer of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s work and to hear Anderson and her talk through their own grief brought so close to home how humbling and humanizing death is to all of us. None of us can shield our loved ones or ourselves from the inevitability of death, but there is a tremendous amount of personal growth that can come from finding healthy ways of grieving our loved ones who’ve passed.
I was very close to my mother-in-law. She lived in a house with 3 generations - her mother, her and her daughter. She was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. For 6 months, I spent almost every weekend helping her go through the house - this goes to xxx person, this can be donated, this is trash. While unbelievably hard, it's some of the best memories I have with her. Her stories, memories of her kids, personal thoughts can never be replaced.
These are terrific programs. I lost parents and siblings to cancer. I used to get told you can’t speak ill of the dead. However, these people were human. They had lives that weren’t perfect. They did dumb things at times. I believe my grief requires telling the whole story.
I lost my sweet husband, Philip, to early on-set Alzheimers. I was his sole caregiver. We met in our late 20s and became fast friends for years until we became a couple in our late 40s. What Dolores said about the talking is right to the point of the connection and the profound loss. We covered every topic with our shared curiosity and love for this amazing world. The passing of time removed his ability to tell me what was on his mind, but I swear, until the end, I could still see it in his eyes. He was a wonder❤

My Dad having passed 1/2019.... I went to grief counseling and now I find myself getting involved in the community that I grew up in just like Dad in our community coaching baseball, Scouts. It is one way I honor him and the memories come back on my hometown where we grew up
Around 2015 or 2016 I met Doris Kearns Goodwin rather by accident while I was volunteering as a Big Apple Greeter. I knew I'd be leaving Manhattan after 50 years living there so I took visitors from all over the world to see "My Manhattan." We were both with young females who were trying on clothes in the former Lord & Taylor on Fifth Avenue and we spoke for over a half hour as the girls tried on dress after dress. What I noticed most about her was her overarching kindness and I was trying to figure out why I knew her face. So very graciously before we said our goodbyes she said something to the effect: "It's been so nice spending time with you -- I'm Doris" as she held out her hand to shake mine. I'd read her books before but after meeting her I made sure that I read more of them!
I was 18 when my mother died from colon cancer when se was 48. It took me 30 years to process the grief, which, ironically and appropriately, meant I was her age when she died. For the longest time, I thought I would died at 48. I am 73 and EVERY year of my life is a HUGE plus. I am Mexicana, and death was always a family affair. My mother took me to my first funeral when I was FOUR in a small Mexican village where there is no embalming-I was enthralled and fascinated. I started building Altar for Day of the Dead fourteen years ago. In November, I erected two Altars to honor my husband who died in February 2024. I am enriched by these types of videos. Thank you, Anderson Cooper an Doris Kearns Goodwin. And I have been meaning to read her latest book-I am now heading to my library to check it out.
I’d still like to ask Doris Kearns Goodwin about LBJ reportedly getting into her bed when she interviewed him many years ago. And most importantly: Did she get into her bed with him?

Lmao. You know nothing about Carter.
