Building a Berm Out Of Less Than Ideal Dirt

  • We are building a mountain bike berm with less than ideal material. I wanted to camber and elevate the trail's riding surface to make it more usable year around. I didn't want to disturb too much of the area, but everywhere I kept digging I ran into rocks, or ledge, so I we build this berm with dirt that was more organic and less sifted than I'd usually like to see how it would hold up over time.

      @@PhilsWorld I mean, that, regarding the unpackability of the soil, and the appearance of bigger Rocks under the surface soil, to utilitise these rocks and therefore remove the soil, by (more easily) brooming away the soil, so that the rocks are left over, with which you can build (or it'll appear itself) a rock garden, which at a slight angle, I call "rock garden berm"🤣

    This is totally off topic from the video but you should got to blue mountain opening day in 2023 they added a new blue trail this year and I think it’d be perfect for Haley

    Near the prickers, it'd be cool to have a wood feature over that stump.

      I've thought about doing something with it as a standalone feature, but it wouldn't fit the flow of the current trail. The other thing I've neglected to explain is that I want some of these trails to be useable in the winter for XC skiing.

    I wonder if all those rocks are from glacial activity way back.

    I doubt you will see this, but when you are working with this kind of soil, is it better to move the leaf litter and organic material to the uphill side or downhill side of a berm or bench cut? Thanks.

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  7 місяців тому

      I do both. But i think the lower side will do more good. It essentially creates a protective barrier that will help hold the soil in place and prevent erosion. I will also do this on the high side of the bench cut after I fade the that top cut into the trail tread. It just makes it looks a bit more natural.

    Well if people knew how to corner correctly you wouldn't have to build so many berms. But that's what people want nowadays, trails that will be comfortable for wheelchairs.

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  Рік тому

      Nah Berms are fun when done right, just more berms are part of a flow trail and they are big flat and boring.
