This is a very informative lecture particularly the gut's connection to the brain. And happy to know that spicy foods are not harmful to the gut :)

Excellent lecture, lot of eye openers for better understanding of GI track and digestion of our food.
Dr Pasricha, I have one question, how do we improve one's Bowl movement especially in case of who has sleep disorder and high anxiety level. Thanks

@Makedonche - search for NYTimes or BBC news re. 'drinking water before meals' + 'weight loss'. there are other studies as well. like i said, it was general knowledge if you follow health news regularly.

@rodeo179, I forgot NYTimes and BBC news are renown scientific journals. The NYTimes article mentions 3 articles and has no discussion on strengths and weaknesses of how the study was carried out. I'm sure the weight loss would occur regardless of fluid ingested - it looks a classic example of the placebo effect to me. If I used that to prove my point I would be laughed out of medical school, and rightly so.

Re 41:30, there have been research studies done that prove drinking water with meal is less healthier than 10 min after or before. Some common sense and general knowledge can also lead to similar conclusion: water alters the pH of the stomach (bringing it toward neutral point) whereas acidic environment is needed for protein breakdown. Without water, food breakdown is more sufficient.
Quite embarrassing to see such ignorance at an ivy school; not the first time if you watch other videos.
