I think awarding this game GOTY was a pretty meta decision. We're living in a time of high social unrest, and despite globalization, we've never been so divided. I'd like to believe this choice helps sensitize people to reflect on these issues and consider how to address them with tact.

It’s a hard year to choose just one GOTY, but this is a good one to choose. I was fascinated by how deeply and openly the game was inspired by Renaissance art and literature, from Heironymous Bosch to Thomas More. Shout outs to Like a Dragon 8, another outstanding RPG to come out this year
Not really hard. I can tell you now it's 90% going to be astrobot. Not even my type of game. Last yr was one of the hardest as we had the best yr in gaming of all time and I've been gaming since 94. Blockbuster after blockbuster
GameSpot-based AF. Not only that, but this is the only review outlet that has actually touched on why the game is so important culturally and thematically (which is crazy to me, because it's by far the game's most important aspect; I think Hashino would agree).

Never thought I'd see the day where a turn-based *JRPG* was getting GOTY wins again. Action JRPGs or Western turn-based games maybe, but these more traditional JRPGs usually do not get the same shine that others do.
Western turn based games pretty much never get that level of recognition either. Baldur's Gate 3 was pretty much a first despite Larian's previous turn-based games also being high quality.

Honestly, the greatest game I’ve ever played after Baldur’s Gate 3. I love Persona games and I enjoy the difficulty of Shin Megami Tensei, so this game accompanied by the art, the music, the story, just all of it, is absolute peak JRPG.

It literally takes all my favourite parts of countless Atlus games and blends them into an unforgettable experience. Then there's all the easter eggs and call backs for older Atlus fans too. I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves.

This game really has the highest of highs out of any jrpg with the fantasy setting. Fire emblem wishes it had characters this deep. It goes against all expectations with its characters. Heismay. Is literally top 5 Altus characters for me.
Although I've enjoyed what Atlus games I've played, I was genuinely surprised on how much I enjoyed this game. The story, especially, was surprising. I didn't expect it to be as deep as it was or to like it's characters as much as I did. For me, they were a level above what I played in Persona. Well deserved GOTY.
Just finished it yesterday, and it is amazing, their best game yet, IMO. I love the nuances which give depth to the characters, it's not all black or white, the writing is excellent, the translation and voice acting are amazing, as always (unlike the typical JRPG dialogue). Extra props for the music. It was a labor of love, and it shows! Btw, there are plenty of valiant efforts in gaming this year, we should refrain from comparing apples with oranges and having to pick one. We don't HAVE to pick. They're all beautiful in their own right.

It’s my GOTY as well. I tried the demo and it does a great job of giving you a taste of the full experience. Highly recommend it since you can carry the demo’s progress to the full game. I spent 136 hours on my first play-through. Haven’t been this connected to a game in a while.
Metaphor is the anniversary of game creation by Altus, inside the game has lots of other Altus game as easter game And story theme is great too, the line between fantasy and reality is interesting to discuss

WE LOVE TO SEE IT! With this, the glowing reviews on Steam, and its three Game Awards, I'm so glad Metaphor is getting the love it deserves. Maybe it's because of recent events or maybe I'm just a sucker for stories that talk about the importance of fantasy and believing in a better world (or both), but this game will stay with me for a long, long time. The story, the characters, the music, the art style, the messages and themes - Atlus absolutely knocked it out of the park here and it's easily my favorite game of the year.

Astro bot was a nice experience. Fun platformers, paid homage to other IPs. But surely that cannot be enough to be game of the year? It's actually so crazy that it won.

Wukong is never close to GOTY, its a good action rpg game, but that's about it Metaphor should've won in my opinion, but TGA is always Biased towards sony, they robbed Red Dead Redemption back in 2018 as well
@@reddevil5712nah, it’s just pure fun and surprised and delighted me throughout. Even though my GOTY was also Metaphore, Astrobot deserves it as much as any of the nominations if not more. I’ve seen a few streamers, and many commentators, who were as surprised as you, then play it, and have so much fun they admit they finally get it. It’s also a game that can be played for all ages. Playing this again with my kids, seeing how much they enjoyed it, is a shared experience that none of the other nominations can offer. Metaphore won best RPG and other awards. It did great. Astro is a deserved winner though, and something special.

Did they bribe all the international publications accords the world? Etc That is just a silly conspiracy theory. It’s a flawed system and some of those publications have no right to be judges, but it’s much better than the most popular one being voted for - Where obsessed always online whales, or votes for your favorite company, country etc can dominate.
Played the demo and loved it. But after FF7 rebirth and LAD infinite wealth, I just don't have another 150+ hour RPG in me at the moment. Also, the reason I haven't played Persona 3.

Totally. Astro bot as good as it wasn't original enough for me.. I felt like I was playing every nintendo games rolled into one and I love my nintendo games but I also like originality. As my as love Final Fantasy games, 7 remake is still not an original story so that leaves me with metaphor which was fantastic and original

Actually it doesnt really have an easy answer. And how the questions get asked within a videogame and fiction is also very important. Metaphor ReFantazio makes you actually think about how Fantasy can perhaps shape your reality. It wants to surpass Reality. It goes deeper than pretty much any fantasy videogame Ive played in my 25 years gaming.

It reinvigorated my love for Fantasy again because its the first fantasy game that truly made me question "Why do I play Fantasy". I always took it for granted because Fantasy games are a very popular genre. But Metaphor made me realize I shouldnt do that, and start to actually consiously appreciate the Genre and mayhap even study them to a certain extent.
Well, if you really compare Metaphor and Astrobot side-by-side, it really doesn't make sense. Astrobot has a great gameplay, but it's really all there is to it compared to Metaphor.
I really like Jessica's analyses and writing; they're really good, but, and I mean this in a polite way, they're not a good narrator. That made the video hard to watch, but I enjoyed reading it on the website.
Absolutely loving this game and it’s story! Persona like games are just a different breed of entertainment especially for an older gamer like myself 🎉🎉🎉

The ending of the game breaks the fourth wall. Given the context of the time we live in... this is an amazing game.
