- Wherein our hero Durfee reviews The God Is Not Willing the newest Malazan book by Steven Erikson. #StevenErikson #Malazan #TheGodIsNotWilling
Bookshelf is sagging bro...the weight of the world is too much. Gonna be "Malazan Books are a Falling"
soon.
Thanks for your rippin' reviews Brian, great stuff! 🤘
Damn, you're right!
I bet all my ebooks are the same size!
Brian, I sympathize with your plight. Luckily, I've come up with a brilliant solution to your problem! Check this out: you give me your current collection, then get yourself a complete collection of Book Club editions. Then they'll all match up beautifully! Of course that leaves me with a mismatched set, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make for you; my friend.
THANK YOU! No one else is talking about this!
Book was dope. Erickson was razor sharp. I am a fan of his prose more in other books. I,e DoD,TtH and the Kharkansas duo soon to be trio.
But we got some of that with Rant and Damisks adventure. And let's not forget the poetry hidden in every bit of Malazan soldier dialogue. He out did himself with these moments unlike in any other malazan book. Reapers Gale? Bonehunters have there moments.
Anyway dealing with strange book sizes come with being a Malazan fan.
Cool review.
Brian, have you seen the Malazan U.K. hardcovers? The spines all match, the Ian Esslemont books also match with them, and they have the art from the U.S. paperbacks. They look beautiful on the shelf together!
The only problem is they're all out of print and go for around $100 each 😑
Only books 7-10
Yeah, 100% agree, Brian! My ocd meter would also be in overdrive. Painful just to see it in your shelf. Lol
The struggle is real!

If the next books are the same I'm fine with it. I like that size actually. Can you imagine if the next one goes back to regular size haha
That would be maddening.
Bantam press edition is the same size as all of other Malazan books. I have got it. It's awesome!
I returned the book for the exact reason you mentioned here. That being said, can you please release new hardcover for your The Forgetting Moon series? I was heartbroken to hear the book 3 is paperback only.
I enjoyed the return to this Malazan timeline. I don’t think you need to be “dropped into it” anymore since this takes places after Erikson’s main series and Esslemont’s main series. This book calls back to recent history a lot.
It’s good to see that the Malazan soldiers are still the way we want them to be. There’s some interesting new magic building up that’s very intriguing. The effect of Karsa without him even appearing was done so well.
This problem happens a lot more with trade paperback. Some are near the size of a hardcover, and most of them are 20cm high. Why not publish one size each kind?
I agree, i dont know why hes complains about something so petty.
Fthise two published books you just said you have out sounds interesting I think I’ll read it some day.
I have both of the Bauchelain & Korbal Broach novellas collection and the first collected tails is 6x9 but the second is 7x10 or 7x11 it bothers me so much when I look at my Malazan shelfs
Since some of those Malazan titles are hard to find in either trade or hardcover (for reasonable prices, anyway), I have a mix of both. So my OCD is already spiked with that series. But this...this is beyond the pale. Up there with the yahoos that decided that book 8 of Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow would only come out in trade paperback, when all the books before, and all the books after were released in hardcover. Drives me nuts every time I look at that shelf.
On the plus side, from your earlier videos it kinda looked like your Kent Family Chronicles were regular sized hardcovers, and I was quite jealous. But now I feel better. LOL.
The Bantam version of the hardcover is full size . If want to get one of those
Haha the book size struggles. I ordered mine from thrift books...and it's missing the cover 😂 I'm just happy to have some new Malazan to read though
They probably saved $.10/copy in the smaller format.
Get UK (Bantam) version while still available, it's regular size.
Do you not find the title size, placement, and font disconcerting also?
My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
Nice review.... brah.
Things like that are really driving you crazy.. especially for such a big and also expensive series. Don't know who's not paying attention there....
This new Steven Erikson book, could that be read without knowing the main series before? Would you recommend that for an Erikson beginner? ^^
Noooooooooo
The UK version is the same size as the other Malazan books. This one is on Tor ...
My bigger problem is I finished it, now I have to wait for the next part :)
UK edition which I’ve had for months is bigger sized book. Spines don’t match the US edition but at least it’s bigger.
He was so mad because of the size of the book that he forgot to put the plastic cover in it.
I received this (Tor) edition and was really disappointed. So I returned it and then bought the Bantam edition.
Smaller book size means the company is trying to save a tree. 🤠
Bruh I'm waiting for the third book
I bet Steven Erikson gasped when he saw the title of the video. Then he breathed a sigh of relief at 1:09 ...
Some publishers just want to watch the world burn. 🔥
Paper. Paper cost is increasing. Economic set back for publishers. Commission artists aren't willing to bend to publisher quotes of art.
The UK edition is a full hardcover
damn, really. hmmmmmmmmm
What I liked about the Malazan series was its complexity. You had to hit the ground running and keep up or you would be overwhelmed. No hand holding. It would be weird to read a book by Erikson that is more traditional story telling.
I flat don't understand how this series can be considered one of the greatest of all time and you can only buy them in those crappy mass market paperbacks. WTF publishers!
I could trade you the bigger versions for the 4 BCE's I have . 😉
TOR decided to be heretics, I see.
I can feel your discomfort oozing out of the video as well as your disappointment Brian😂😂😂
I was hoping once Tor took over publishing for Malazan that things were going to improve for SE, but it seems like instead of promoting him, Tor will just leave him on the back burner…
A completely justifiable rant my man!
I don't understand why not print more copies of the books. Lot of people want them. Hardcovers.
My god is not willing hard back is the same size of the crippled god book.
Arrogant publisher doesn't care about public perception of their product. Guess they want to drive people away from traditional books. I've been seeing waaaay too many companies adopt a marketing policy of "take it or leave it." But hey! -We're just the book buying public. What we want or think doesn't matter.
Shrinkflation strikes again! :(
The most annoying thing about this video is that he pronounces Malazan wrong the entire time
The problem is Tor, the publisher. First, it made little sense to delay the American publication for months after it was available elsewhere. A possible answer to the size issue may be Tor's focus on novellas for the past several years. Maybe it's supposed to fit in with their novella program.
Slightly off topic, their website seems to be severely shrunken and strangled by excessive moderation. So many discussion threads start out as locked, or go to immediate moderation, that conversation are near impossible. If a comment doesn't get approved for days, why care about continuing? Then there are some terrible supposed reviewers who have poor professional standards. What they post are much closer to UA-cam reaction videos than actual reviews.
Your your shelves are sagging 🤣🤣
If a raging feminist decided to impersonate Erickson, this is the book she would write. The book was awful.
Please don't use the "F" word . My ears are not garbage cans.
Sorry. I work at a prison. It just slips out. All. The. Time.
@@B.LEE.DbrianleedurfeeREVIEWS I spent thirty years in prison. Totally understand. It's where I became such a big fan of epic fantasy.
