Aha! So, it turns out that the Allen IS willing . . . to read and review The God Is Not Willing! It's awesome to hear your thoughts, though I am so sad to disappoint you with the news about Karsa not being willing to show up in book two. You are so right about getting more from a Malazan book on a reread. Very nice pronunciations too . . . 😄
Yes Allen, I am just as excited about Teblor Marines! I was moved by that whole thing as well. “In your eyes we ceased to be the enemy. In our eyes now, and forever more, you cease to be ours.” Quote of the book and one of the best of all the Malazan books.
I had a very similar experience with this book! It was slow going and I took time to acclimate, but it was very involving throughout. Love the marines and the Damisk redemption arc! I really enjoyed the in-depth discussion of the themes you provided here!
OMG! I can't believe am actually watching this review Allen. Finally! This was a great review. Thanks for actually editing and posting. I have been waiting for this review ever since you announced the reading along.
we also had a t'lan imass join as a marine in bonehunters... now i want the other elder races to join... a few jaghut a few k'chin che'malle marunes wold be great
I had a great time reading this book. Time may have passed, but Malazan marines are like no other. I missed their banter and just what they represent in that world. Erikson is really building that anticipation for Karsa’s appearance.
I’m late but only because I just read the book! Awesome review, I loved the book too, and you were spot on with everything you said. Despite the fact that there’s KIND OF a lot going on - it’s also a MUCH tighter book than any in MBotF. Much more focused, and really only 2 major plot lines. Yeah a lot of named characters still, but it didn’t feel like too much to keep track of, for me Really looking forward to the next - WITNESS.
Had a visual of Karsa on his porch like Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino with a six pack of beer yelling at people to get off his lawn. Hairbrained prediction - Rant falls in love with one of Hetan's daughters so we have a meeting between Karsa and Kruppe. Yes, very pumped. Many tbr's will be thrown in disarray when book 2 comes out.
Teblor marines for the win! Excellent review! Great point about how Karsa's presence looms large in this book. Rant is the quintessential teenage Teblor. "No, you're not, Rant." 🤣I think Erikson is protecting Rant by keeping Karsa off the page, but I hope we get Karsa at some point. Looking forward to No Life Forsaken!
Im pretty sure the next book is set in Seven Cities thanks to Niflrog(Erikson was literally like "yeah you are right, it has to be Seven Cities, doesn't it?")! Knowing it's your favorite Malazan region, I'm really excited for you! And I'm obviously stoked for another Erikson book, because The God is Not Willing was a 10/10 for me.
Great video! Great book! I read this not too long ago and Im afraid i havent talked about it too much on here. But being a newcomer to the whole Booktube thing, I hope to make more videos about this whole trilogy in the future.
@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria and of course you're also hoping it turns really philosophical with more brooding edur and Andii characters in future books ... right?
This review was fantastic Allen. 1st so glad you're well and on the mend. OK, I read this book earlier this year and didn't know what to think of it. You're review has turned it into a comedy book for me. Lol. You had me laughing out loud. And I think it's changing my view on this book. Definitely makes me want to reread it. Also you nailed something key about Malazan. It gets better upon each reread. Erikson is a genius.
Yeah I feel so much for grounded with a better understanding of the characters and the goal when I re-read so I always discover something else (which is obviously a common thing with his books!)
I'm still working through the ICE books. I'll be reading Orb Scepter Throne this month. I guess I'll get to these after I finish those. I'm looking forward to it. Great review!
@The Library of Allenxandria I really liked Stonewielder. I was always curious about the stormwall and the storm riders so I really liked hearing more about them. And I like Greymane.
Loved this book more than a few of the main 10. Great review. Can't wait for the next book. Still putting off Karkhanas tho. Ugh Tiste are the Hot Topic Race of MBoTF.
Happy New Year! I'm the weird person who read 25-30% of Gardens of The Moon, quit, then read The God Is Not Willing (was told this was okay by a Malazan veteran to get into Erikson's writing), disliked it, then read 54% of Deadhouse Gates and again quit. It is probably the biggest failed reading experience for me other than Ulysses and Infinite Jest because I just don't get it. Enjoyed listening to your review. Happy reading!
You're not alone, it took me 2 or 3 tries for Gardens and I had to try a few times for deadhouse. I haven't gotten to Memories of Ice yet but I have read a few ICE books and Forge of Darkness.
I don't typically watch reviews for books I haven't read, but this is Malazan (not pronounced Mu-lAz-un). Thanks for the spoiler warning. I will bail, but leaving this playing on 2x speed.
Thanks for the review, Allen. So glad you're on the mend. Though Christmas has passed, Stillwater wants me to pass on a message. She'd like a dog.
Thank you so much, Steve! And thanks for passing on Stillwater's message. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hahahaahahah! Someone has said in the comments they're pretty certain book 2 is in 7 Cities and I could NOT be more excited

I can't wait to see the damage those guys are going to do!
I'm watching it on mute, cause I still want to read Malazan someday...😅

If there was a K'Chain marine, I think I'd faint!!!!
Jaghut sappers are a terrifying thought
@@hartmut30plus when it comes to Jaghut, It'd probably end up in them writing a Principia Sapperatica, a 400 page philosophical treatise of The Drum.
I had a great time reading this book. Time may have passed, but Malazan marines are like no other. I missed their banter and just what they represent in that world. Erikson is really building that anticipation for Karsa’s appearance.
I bet we never even see him 😛
Fantastic book and also probably your best review. Makes me want reviews of all the Malazan books from you lol
Hahahahah thanks Jimmy. Maybe on re-read!

Yes! He must be protecting him! Maybe Karsa will just say "you do it" and Rant will ascend lol

Going to read Shogun and Imperium this month

Are we going to get found footage of Malazan reviews ?!! I would be up for that even though I’ve never read the series
hahahah probably not

By far my favorite read of the past year or so! I flew through it so fast I may have to return. Great review! ...Jarrod C

I haven't read any Malazan but I enjoyed the review anyway.
I am feeling called out since I bought this on release and still haven't read it.
No worries! It'll be there and so good!!
Well actually Allen, "Malazan" is pronounced as "Ekke Ekke Ekke Ekke Ptang Zoo Boing...Ni!"
🤣🤣🤣🤣

If a raging feminist decided to impersonate Erickson, this is the book she would write. The book was awful.
Not a bad review but the pronunciation of certain crap bothered me😮
