Please do more vids like these were you enter these larger MTGO events. It's a really good watch and hearing your insight on every play is amazing. Keep up the good work Reid
Reid 'Playing the fastest possible version of the deck' Duke: "Problem is, I don't really know what my opponent's up to." Perhaps it's because you keep winning on turn 2.
Holy crap more of this please! This is a real treat Reid is a master of narrating what he is doing while ‘what he is doing’ is always an amazing line of play, even through mistakes. Getting me HYPED for vintage cube ready to ‘drill some opponents back into standard queues!
ahhh good to be back on a vintage video with The Duke and the kitchen ?making food backround noises we all have grown to love!!!! it wouldnt be a Duke video without all the kitchen noises in the backround:)
1:45:20 you still had a land play--you didn't need to sac lotus yet. Not that it super mattered, you were like 99% to win at that point already, but drawing an extra card can be relevant.
It makes sense in other positions, but from this position he's literally only short on blue and has virtually unbounded other mana, so the 1 extra card from saving (and bouncing) lotus makes more sense, since lotus can then also be any other mana source you need post-Outcome, including more blue. I'm not saying he played badly--far from it. I do think this was a mistake rather than deliberate, though, in this particular position.
Tinker with Cage on the other side, just think of that as a MTGO stress test...never know when you'll discover a new bug :) Please please please keep these videos coming, this was fantastic!!!
I will build your version now in real lif really quick today, as I own all the cards and my Kobold Clamp is not so much fun to me anyway.^^ I still have my workshop-based StaxX Deck as it is, so building Storm additonally in real life looks sweet to me. I'm doing it today :)
This is why MtgO is so frustrating. You enter a high level tournament and encounter a bug that could easily be the different between winning and losing, and therefore the difference between a huge payout and nothing. "Oh sorry, here's your entry fee back." Oh, ok.
henkdachief I bought cards for a Modern combo deck involving Panoptic Mirror only to find out the card was bugged. A couple months went by after I submitted a ticket and it was still bugged. Had to end up selling the cards for a loss. The point is, when a game requires real world money to play, it had better be absolutely on point when it comes to functionality. And it just isn't.
Yeah, it's got some bugs and I personally find it much better than I expected due to comments. There are some cards that just don't work (like teferi's realm which is a pretty cool card for legacy's high tide). There are some interface bugs like mindbreak trap that just makes some card's experience just bad. I actually did miss the opportunity for a challenge top8 due to that bug in the beginning of the year, and then I just got the entry refounded. At least they do that, and even though it doesn't make the experience less bad, it makes you feel less pissed off at mtgo after they at least refound the entry.
In Game 1 of Match 2 the answer he had to blightsteel you mentioned was the Jace he pitched to FoW, which he could have cast next turn with the land and mox he played.
Is there any merit to forcing the mox opal at 2:59:20 ? seems like it would leave opponent with zero mana and no ability to lean on the cantrips to dig for mana sources.
I think if Reid believed he could kill his opponent on the following turn it was correct, but given how players hands were set up, letting the opal resolve and saving the force for a later turn is more appealing.
1:28:30 usually PO decks use Kambal post-sideboard, and they always have at least 1 mentor. It's always nice to leave at least 1 or 2 bolts against it.
At 30:45 I think you can win pretty consistently. Tap pearl and ruby to cast defence grid, cast brainstorm with any blue mana, cast merch scroll and in response sac the LED for BBB, get tendrils and cast with with storm = 7.
I think it’s because this list is constrained on black mana (only 8 black lands, a jet, Lotus, petal and mox opal which is not always online)...black is in the deck for just 3 cards that are too broken not to play (1 of which is the wincon) and vamp tutor is by far not the best card in vintage also due to mental misstep (and keep in mind that is always card disadvantage)...in this versione something like merchant scroll is much better, even if much more narrow
the sensei wasn't really a bug, more of a glitch. he was selecting and deselecting the top. it just happened that he clicked one too many times(or one too few?)
@Eduardo Seifert it actually seems like they frontloaded part of the sensei top activation and had it prematurely change zones. Which means modo doesn't realize it's a legal target for PO.
Not sure about that one either. This play works on MTGO, people have used it against me many times and it works. There are somethings that happen on a really specific scenario, I guess. Last month I was playing with Vintage BUG and for no reason, all my creatures were being considered summoning sick on my opponent's turn, in all the games in a match (including the DRS which wasn't able to be activated). But then it just never happened after that.
Yeah, you're right Eduardo, I replied this during the second game. That's just a bad interface issue, but it's something you get off guard once and then learn how to play (like he did, targeting the top as the first target). It's similar to the mindbreak interface, but way less bad as it's just with SDT while MBT's UI is shitty as hell with anything.
Why mystical tutor over vampiric tutor? You commented multiple times that it was inconvenient that mystical couldn’t get black lotus or memory jar, and with the all in nature of this deck I would assume that flexibility would be worth the 2 life
Out of curiosity, you said that Tendrils did nothing against Kambal. I thought that when Tendrils stormed, it created copies and since you are not casting them, Kambal would only trigger on the initial cast. Am I wrong or missing something?
Stephen Blevins while you are right that kambal doesn’t trigger from the storm copies, in practice it does not matter because he is going to trigger off every spell you cast before the tendrils. Even if you don’t die from the drain somehow, your opponent has gained 2 life for each previous spell so all the storm copies would do is bring them back to whatever life total they had before you started casting. The only way I can think of to beat Kambal with tendrils is if you somehow generated storm using creature spells; I know there is a janky vintage storm deck that uses glimpse of nature and 0-cost creatures to generate storm and draw cards but it might just not be mathematically possible for that to work.

Your round one opp had a good question don't you see less action on average if you crack memory jar in response. The strength of jar is that it let's you dig farther in to the deck and less about raw cards. Plus doesn't the discard work not in your favor in this deck?
Chris Metz he can't Jar away the Tendrils cause it sits in exile for the duration of the Jar turn. It's the only way to win in the deck. Only reason Reid didn't reply to him in the chat was because he didn't want to give his opponent the information that the Tendrils was the sole win condition.
Sammy Wurtman most of the time probably. But at 3 toughness, bolt guaranteed always kills kambal regardless of artifact count. But the choice seems like a good hedge against the case where you don't see enough artifacts to turn on metalcraft in time. Especially since Kambal hates on casting artifacts.
Read the card! You would'nt lose from "not getting the extra card from top" because PO only lets you draw cards for each permanent returned to your hand, and that was your opponent's top.
You can't select the top because putting it on top is part of the cost of activation. I'm almost sure because of the wording this is true. I am willing to suspect that is why.
I'd love to know what you think is happening here if it's not a bug. If you think that putting SDT on top is part of the cost, what do you think is on the stack when Reid is holding priority in response to the activation? You have every right to doubt a Pro, they do mess up sometimes (even a common interaction with Repeal, Hurkyl's, look at the top three -> hold priority-> tap, etc). I'm just curious based on the internal inconsistency of your theory.

Reid is such a stand up guy. I always appreciate the grace, class, and humility he brings to his videos, not to mention the brilliant insight.
ArmorOfGod Reid actually has a phenomenal gift for narration. He does it effortlessly and easily as if it’s all a part of his flow of consciousness.
I totally agree

Reid 'Playing the fastest possible version of the deck' Duke: "Problem is, I don't really know what my opponent's up to."
Perhaps it's because you keep winning on turn 2.
HuggyBearx64 Reid Duke, suffering from success
Round 1 opponent such a nice guy, discussing plays and giving away tips.
“I hope you’ll stay with me for the video”...come on Reid!! You’re playing VINTAGE!! HOW ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH COULD I NOT STAY???
the earth is more blue than green, though
NEEEEEEEEEEERD
It’s vintage. You could get a drink and forget to pause the video and it’ll be over when you come back
same as vintage ;)
Sam MGUGGLE you could go to close your door and come back and the game could be over
Ahhhhh wouldn’t be a Reid Duke video without the kitchen cooking background noise and plates and pots and stove noise!!!! Gotta love it 🥰
Someone PLEASE, get this man... a nice microphone.
Iv never been more excited by an MTG video title in my life.
Super sweet video, man, and only a little bit shorter than a normal 0-1 drop Nassif video.
AHHAHAHAHHA
lol
I love how Reid is so friendly and humble to his adversary.
This was the best video I've seen on ChannelFireball in a long time!
Poetry in motion. Thanks so much for putting your time and energy into this Reid, made for a brilliant watch. :)
Getting to watch you tear it up in vintage is great content. Thanks for sharing the tournament with us!
Good to see some more Vintage on the channel. Especially when is played by one of the best/most entertaining CFB players.
Holy crap more of this please! This is a real treat Reid is a master of narrating what he is doing while ‘what he is doing’ is always an amazing line of play, even through mistakes. Getting me HYPED for vintage cube ready to ‘drill some opponents back into standard queues!

Reid is the most pleasant CFB streamer.
brad bradley there’s also lsv
This hand is slow *10 seconds later* i can potentially win on the first turn hahahaha
Thanks Reid, this was great! Keeping my fingers crossed for a 5-6 hour modern challenge video in the future. :-D
"My Tolarian Academy is tapping for 5 blue mana, that's pretty amazing here." Jesus what an absolutely ridiculous card.
Trying to play this in paper seems like a god damn nightmare. Like you basically need a literal abacus to track your mana and storm count.
Khazuki I play Yidris Storm and to track mana, I use 4 basics and spindowns on each one
easy - just borrow the abacus you use to count your $
That actually sounds like a good idea
Awesome content, I'd watch anything like this again in a heartbeat! Congratulations on the finish
Reid's narration, coupled with his deep warm voice, make for a lovely listening experience. No homo.
I don't think you can say, "No homo" after that...
#WouldGoHomoForReid
2:18:00 reid: haha thats funny i borded out yawg will
me: PLZ READ CAGE PLZ READ CAGE PLZ READ CAGE.
he didnt read cage
I was like...he is not planning on getting Blightsteel..nah it's Reid Duke, he'll figure it out last second...NOOOO!
c'mon...he had to handicap himself in order to give his opponent a chance
This is a really cool video. That one match where in turn one you effectively draw 40 cards and dealt 44 damage. Vintage is such a crazy format!
Such a great player in every format.
Three hours of reid on storm? this is better than any recent movie.
Legacy veedio and vintage video both on paradoxical outcome this week? That is so cool!
1:45:20 you still had a land play--you didn't need to sac lotus yet.

Calling bullshit on you owning all of power 9 dude
Very nice deck! No Grapeshot though?^^ But I never thought of siding out Windfall on the draw, nice consideration :)
Hyped to watch premier events
This is why MtgO is so frustrating. You enter a high level tournament and encounter a bug that could easily be the different between winning and losing, and therefore the difference between a huge payout and nothing. "Oh sorry, here's your entry fee back." Oh, ok.
Yes super frustrating. But Reid reacts in a super calm and professional manner. I would be not this way if I had invested in the deck and challenge...
henkdachief I bought cards for a Modern combo deck involving Panoptic Mirror only to find out the card was bugged. A couple months went by after I submitted a ticket and it was still bugged. henkdachief uhhh fuck you corporate shill
Gakoranus do you think their getting paid or had the word shill just because "they disagree with me so there corrupt"
5 years later and Reid still has that hideous Tendrils. Can't not love it.
Benjamin Kikkert It was absolutely correct.
Probably correct. But, any mox off top he would of looked very silly.
I think if Reid believed he could kill his opponent on the following turn it was correct, but given how players hands were set up, letting the opal resolve and saving the force for a later turn is more appealing.
Personally I think he should have, given he knew the opponent's hand.
Seemed super greedy
1:28:30 usually PO decks use Kambal post-sideboard, and they always have at least 1 mentor. It's always nice to leave at least 1 or 2 bolts against it.
"Hello, welcome to Reids Kitchen"
Broken combos and force of will. What a nice format :)
Great content!
Straight up is playing all the power 9. Feelsgoodman
"Just as Garfield intended." As i watch for the 4th time.
At like 58:00 I hear someone cooking. What is being developed?
That's just Reid cooking up a plan to beat people with this deck. Easy to get confused, don't worry.
More of these please!
At 30:45 I think you can win pretty consistently. Tap pearl and ruby to cast defence grid, cast brainstorm with any blue mana, cast merch scroll and in response sac the LED for BBB, get tendrils and cast with with storm = 7.
Merchant's scroll can only get blue instants otherwise your line would work
A rtfc moment.
ah OK thanks, I thought it was way to easy for him to miss.
You are not wrong my dude. Can't say I have cast merchant scroll too many times.
Why no power cube this season 😰
Why wouldn't you force the tinker that resulted in a t1 blightsteel?
I forgot Cage did anything but hate on graveyards ._. Can’t blame you for that one lol
That's really powerful !
Does Reid play in his kitchen? I thought I heard a gas stove igniter and vegetables being chopped in the background lol
Reid, of course Ill stay with you for the rest of the video.
Best content ever
2:18:23 Bodied by Grafdigger's. Lol. Great content still. :)
this list doesnt have vampiric tutor, strange. is there a reason?
also waiting for a reply on this as I am running a similar build
I think it’s because this list is constrained on black mana (only 8 black lands, a jet, Lotus, petal and mox opal which is not always online)...black is in the deck for just 3 cards that are too broken not to play (1 of which is the wincon) and vamp tutor is by far not the best card in vintage also due to mental misstep (and keep in mind that is always card disadvantage)...in this versione something like merchant scroll is much better, even if much more narrow
God damn modo with the bugs
the sensei wasn't really a bug, more of a glitch. he was selecting and deselecting the top. it just happened that he clicked one too many times(or one too few?)

Watch closely all the other times he casted it targetting top. The same glitch happens, but he clicks through and the top is bounced
At 2:23:01 why not hardcast blightsteel?
Today, I was playing paradoxical outcome against fastbond and I beat them by going off through 3 sphere of resistances
Why do you play snow covered islands over basic islands in this deck?
Reid Duke is a fucking national treasure
Why mystical tutor over vampiric tutor? You commented multiple times that it was inconvenient that mystical couldn’t get black lotus or memory jar, and with the all in nature of this deck I would assume that flexibility would be worth the 2 life
That laptop fan is doing some work
Round 8 is why I love watching vintage and why I will never play Vintage.
@2.07:29 could you have paradoxicalled the blight steel?
Can only bounce things you control with PO
great gameplay
What did you chat about??
At 2:32:30 couldn't Reid have drawn an extra card by tapping the top before Tinkering it away?
Ethryas Tinker is a sorcery, so he can't tap then Tinker. Nor could he Tinker then tap in response, as saccing is part of the cost
rekenner ah of course. Thanks!
@16:08 - Hot Pocket's done!
Why hurks recall rather than retract?
Bit Spook 1) Hurk’s lets you bounce your opponents’ artifacts, which is particularly relevant against Shops, and 2) Mental Misstep was at 4.
7:50 is one of the many, many reasons why I don't play modo.
Out of curiosity, you said that Tendrils did nothing against Kambal. I thought that when Tendrils stormed, it created copies and since you are not casting them, Kambal would only trigger on the initial cast. Am I wrong or missing something?
But every spell you cast for your storm count
I know that, I was just commenting on what he actually said.
Stephen Blevins while you are right that kambal doesn’t trigger from the storm copies, in practice it does not matter because he is going to trigger off every spell you cast before the tendrils. Even if you don’t die from the drain somehow, your opponent has gained 2 life for each previous spell so all the storm copies would do is bring them back to whatever life total they had before you started casting.

it does, but he had tendrils in hand. He didn't want to exile it with memory jar since he wanted to win that turn
If you want to play bolt isn't galvanic blast strictly better?
Sammy Wurtman most of the time probably. But at 3 toughness, bolt guaranteed always kills kambal regardless of artifact count. But the choice seems like a good hedge against the case where you don't see enough artifacts to turn on metalcraft in time. Especially since Kambal hates on casting artifacts.
It also kills jace. I guess there isn't much difference from 3 to 4 as there is from 2 to 3.
It would be strictly better if it did 3 damage base and 4 damage with Metalcraft.
:O
Read the card! You would'nt lose from "not getting the extra card from top" because PO only lets you draw cards for each permanent returned to your hand, and that was your opponent's top.
16:10 mmmmm dinner is ready!! Wait yawg will gotta kill them first ughhhh!!!:)

"If I don't have 4 Force of Wills in my deck, the earth will be sucked into a black hole." --almost every MTG player for the past 15 years
Would have totally FOW'd the Opal in the second game of the finals.
God damn is vintage a silly format. Love watching it though, esp. with Reid.
Hello My Friends
*VEEEEEDIIIIIOOOOOO!*
What a frustrating final match
Reid, I love your videos; but your sound is a bit of. A lot of noise on ur mic...
49:13 I am Mr. P**ppybu**hole!
please someone buy him a decent mic
Watching Reid decide on anything is like watching molasses pour on a cold, winter's day. Jesus christ!
WOP WOP!!! EXPRESS REID TUF TUF BOL!! :D/uke/
Reid tier 0
Isn’t gemstone mine just better than black lotus? I mean it makes 3 of any color and it’s a land so it can be hit my artifact destruction
it only makes one mana at a time, tap ability
You can't select the top because putting it on top is part of the cost of activation. I'm almost sure because of the wording this is true. I am willing to suspect that is why.
ghostofkrows This is incorrect. Not a knock on you, but just for your information, it's a bug.
ghostofkrows no, the activation cost is only the Tap. You can tell because the cost is before the :
No the draw a card then bounce your top is an age old trick that should work. It's a bug.
I'm just curious based on the internal inconsistency of your theory.

this format is too weird. I like to play creatures + smash
One misclick can really lose you the game, sick
Hmmm, yea I still don’t see the appeal of vintage.
Plll
