PREACH!!!! WE can afford to take a 10 day vacation. BUT, we want to pay off our last car payment. Then pay off our house. Sacrifice NOW, play later. My co worker GOOFY as% told me he was 😡, that he couldn’t take his YEARLY two trips a year. Ion see the 🤟🏿💯🙌🏿💯🙉, for DYING to go on vacation. You hate your job? You running from everyday life? Because when you’re on vacation, you can forget about, BILLS, & life and your responsibilities for what, a week. 8 days the most. I see A LOT of my friends on social, 🤟🏿💯🙉🔥👍🏿. We’re out, AGAIN. I’m like 🤔🤦🏾♂️. You can’t tell me, all these people paying CASH for vacations. Because that’s how you ONLY should go on vacation. It’s hits better while you’re there. And ESPECIALLY when you come back. The vacation stays actually where you left it. At the resort. Not in your mailbox. Coming through on your credit card. My co worker dumb ass told me, he’s tired of just going to work & going home. I told his dumb ass, that’s what ADULTS do. Who win in life. 10 years from now when I’m UP. It’s going to be from the 🤡’s, must be nice. IT IS. We sacrificed.
This is why I never loan money to friends or family. If you loan someone 5 grand to fix their car or whatever and then you see them go on vacation before paying you, that creates resentment.
Yes. I leant money to friends to save their house, and after they caught up on house payments, they bought a swimming pool and went back into debt. I got paid back MOST of the money months later and never leant them money again. The next year they borrowed money to take a cruise after taking out a home equity loan! She died a few years later, and he didn’t have money to bury her. THAT is what happens to people who live beyond their means and borrow money. I don’t have much, but I don’t owe a penny.
A vacation used to be a reward for your hard work. Wherein all your bills were paid up in advance & you had a bag saved up for that vacay. Now ppl just wanna take vacations by any means just to show off on social media.
Sounds about right. I’d rather be broke and have a staycation than go on vacation flexing for social media. Being broke, going on vacation broke and coming back home broke is not the ticket!
Nothing wrong with taking vacation whether you work hard or not. The issue is, like anything else, you shouldn’t do anything you can’t afford. A vacation does not have to be luxurious. Visiting a friend/family member, staying local, going to the beach, museum, water park or attending an event or two.
I been there before. A grown man went on a vacation for 9 days with us. Then after 2 days he was out of money and calling his Momma for money... stay at home if you Broke!
Social media has made this all sooo much worse. People going broke trying to impress people they don't know. I remember when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. The only people on vacation cruises were on TV. If you went on "vacation," it was typically to visit relatives (i.e. free and low-cost).
I agree, we use ours every single month and they are paid in full by the due date. Cars paid in full and working on paying off mortgage. Some of us are definitely out here, learned from previous mistakes.
Yep 👍🏽. I use CC for everything and pay the balance. I traveled for work and accumulated miles so get a discount on vacation travel. Now I use the 3% for our dinners etc. my only debt is my home and car payment both 3% interest $270 car note. I pay my daughter’s tuition rather than pay off the car. I’m maxing out my retirement accounts and looking for RE investments. I also get the 0% if I plan a large purchase. CC can give you leverage if you manage them and don’t use them as income.
I have a sister-in-law who is a Disney stan. She finances every vacation through Disney Vacations. She has a trip coming up in the fall on the Disney cruise line but is still paying off her her last Disney vacation as well. This is a woman who doesn't have two nickels to rub together but she still takes a vacation every year .
This is exactly why we are not going on vacation this year. Just got a new home and I just want to enjoy it, bask in it, I work hard to decorate and make it comfortable I'd be damn if I spend more money to go sit down anywhere else.

Living in a home is more than just mortgage, insurance, and taxes. There is a constant upkeep from the applinaces to the roof and all points in between. Something breaks and it's like a big shock.
I work in HVAC and we see homes with 3-4 brand new cars in their driveway but when it's time to replace/repair they complain about the price, they usually do the cheapest repair. A tech told me it's because the AC is hidden and can't be shown off.
I’m currently on a 3 week paid vacation from my job and when I get back ppl are gonna be asking me “where’d you go?” And when I tell them I took a staycation they’re all gonna be shocked and it’s just crazy lol before I left they told me “enjoy your money now” etc etc. bro I live on my own and I’m currently getting rid of debt and trying pay off my car. In about two years is when I can finally take a real vacation somewhere.
I don’t finance anything. If it’s a big purchase, I save up and pay cash. I saved for 1 year to go on my dream vacation. If I can’t afford it, I don’t buy it. It’s pretty simple. I rent, I don’t have a mortgage. Homes are crazy prices right now. I ain’t doing it. I’m good where I’m at.
One of the major downsides of social media is that it has allowed people to see how other people above their tax bracket live and this hasn’t necessarily been a good thing because now these folks think that they too should be able to have that vacation, car, house, etc. just because they want it.
Right?!?! My kids asked why we haven’t taken any trips over the past 2 years other than to visit family within driving distance (still expensive). I said because we won’t put it on credit because we can’t afford it right now. We are just starting to crawl our way out of debt.
The biggest issue regarding this is too much VISIBILITY. People envy people on social media going on trips that they wish they could afford. Staycations are most underrated thing you can do. Especially if you live in a large city. There is so much that you do that you haven’t in your own city.
If you don't have your emergency fund fully funded you should not be going on these travel vacations. If you have debt you should not be going on vacations.
My parents came to this country (legally) with $100 in their pockets, we were so poor, my mom made my clothes... As remembered, we only took one family vacation ever... All of the kids went to good schools, and are multi millionaires today.

Most of the people that I know that go on vacation literally are always complaining about their finance but yet they still go away. I guess they just accepted their fate on never having money. I got a cousin like that...4 degrees just to work from home part time making $17 an hour but will max out her credit card for a bday vacation then complain about how poor she is. She accepted her fate that she'll just die in debt...sad but I appreciate her for reminding me everyday what not to be in life.

Agree! Got out of cc debt 3 years ago, won’t use them again. If I don’t have cash, we don’t need it. House will be paid for in 11 years. Obtained a 15 year 1.8% mortgage in 2021. Paying extra to the principal, every month to take 14 payments off at the end. No loans, no car payments , preparing for a very comfortable retirement. We are in our early 50s. Built our house in 2000 and raised our two sons here and will never move. Good luck to you and your family all your excellent choices!

It’s competition for most people to go on a vacations that they can’t afford. The holidays are around and most of the post on social media of vacations are paid with credit cards, pay day loans, personal loans take your pick. I know personally a girl that went to Hawaii for ten days and when she came back she had to get another full time job just to keep from getting evicted all because she wanted to go to Hawaii.
My ex went to Hawaii and had no money so didnt even get a hotel ... she camped with her other broke friends A week later Covid happened and everybody got locked down. Karma

I'm a local tractor trailer driver in Virginia. I drive to Northern Virginia from Richmond, VA 5 days a week via I-95. The number of people traveling at 12AM in the morning is ridiculous. People find a way to afford vacations no matter the cost.
They are paying for vacations the same way they are paying for their daily door-dashed Starbucks coffee, multiple weekly lunches at the pricey local pub, their cigarettes and alcohol, their Hellcats and Scat packs, and all the shit they buy on Amazon.....on credit. The only thing they aren't paying for is their student loans.
I've seen a few trailer park types trying to stretch a dollar too to go on that vacation and go back to the park afterwards. Disney for example, you know some who are there with three kids are stretching that dollar.
I work for the Airlines. So I fly next to nothing which is half the battle. So I have no problem going on vacation. All paid in cash. I know the average person flying today is paying thru the nose. I hope they don’t put it on credit 😢
Same but retired early(FIRE) in 2020. Yeah I fly free on American any class for life,ID90, and ZED. Passport at 18. Spent time in 65 countries (including Dubai,Iran,and Cuba), 4 RTWs,well over two million miles taking off 2-4 months a year without pay on top of five weeks paid vacation. So far this year Nov-Jan on Kauai, three weeks for Rio Carnival, April/May/June in Spain,Germany,Austria,and Italy. Currently in Lugano Switzerland for Lugano Estival Jazz. Girlfriend and I are staying all summer for some exploring ,hiking ,backpacking,etc.. One thing for sure is everyone isn’t struggling. I’m completely debt free with no financial issues and my girlfriend is from Italy with her own wealth,zero issues,and early retired herself. I have seen and met many Americans and Canadians while traveling. Apparently I’m not the only heavy saver/investor nerd that rode the real estate and bull run from 2009.

Poor planning. Very poor planning. Nobody plans things anymore. Tbh eyes rather do right now situations. This is crazy. I plan most of my larger vacations a year in advance. That way I pay as I get closer to the date to leave. That’s insane.
I take about 4 vacations a year. However I am a travel agent and use the money I make booking travel to fund my own vacations. Also, I never finance trips. On occasion. i may use Uplift at 0% interest. I think there is a way to travel and maintain your finances.
Lol, I hate to keep saying it, but back in the day, the Freaknik, Essence Fest or Myrtle Beach bike week was the vacation. We road tripped and had one or two hotel rooms. So we each spent only a few dollars. Otherwise, it was the local Budweiser fest or HBCU classic football games. Rarely a need to use credit cards.
Fo' Real! I have family everywhere, so I never paid for or stayed in a hotel. I partied in the hotel functions and most of getting my groove on was with the Bunnies in the back seat of my ride or theirs. LOL. Then we back it up at the party house and it is what it was. I never spent more than $250-$300 on a Bike Week, Freaky Deek-Nik, or Myrtle Beach Buss-Down event. LMAO!

I’m lucky to live in Orlando. I can drive 20 mins to the theme parks, 45 to beach and take the train to west palm beach if I really wanted to get luxurious. I refuse to pay large amounts for a vacation. Sure, they’re fun but not worth the money.
I’ve done a payment plan vacation before, but that’s only because my side job is delayed pay so I get the money about a month or later after I work, then I can pay it off when it comes. However, I see how it can produce negative spending habits even tho there is no interest.

I lived in NYC for many years, and there was all kinds of free entertainment, concerts in the park, biking in the park, art festivals, take the train to the beaches. A treat, back in the day was buying a Sabrett Hot Dog from the street vendors, and you were happy with it, or buying a small bag of roasted chestnuts from the street vendor and sitting on a park bench, people watching. It was more important to be with good friends than to go into debt impressing people that could care less about you or your $1500.00 designer handbag or $500 sneakers.

i take a 2-3hr drive to the beach. Stay for 2 days and that's good enough for me. I do this either before Memorial Day weekend before the prices go up or after Labor Day weekend when the room prices go back to normal.

Do not borrow money unless it's a sensible real estate investment. Stay away from auto loans, credit cards, personal loans, home equity lines, student loans etc.
You look at the money that is in your account and you plan your vacation with that.. It is stupid getting into debt for that.. Even more stupid paying it off for years.. You have to use a credit card to book plane tickets, Airbnb, a cruise, etc. If you booked it with physical cash then let me know how you did it... (I am not driving to the airport to purchase plane tickets there with cash and I am not driving to the cruise line's headquarters to pay for my cruise with cash). The difference is that you use the money that is in your account vs. someone that doesn't have it so you just pay it off without getting into debt...
If you are smart, invest in Visa and Mastercard stock. People will continue to put themselves in credit card debt. This will never go away. It's like being an OBGYN Dr. and a mortician, good job security!
I actually only use credit cards for cash back. I haven’t used them on vacations though. I use them to on items that I already have cash for and know I am going to buy. So the money for the item is in my account. I swipe the card, get the cash back for it and then make the payment before the statement drops (never even hits my credit report). But that takes discipline to do along with the desire to be debt free.

Banks used to have special accounts: “vacation clubs” and “Xmas clubs”…. Easy to budget.

Social media has made this all sooo much worse. People going broke trying to impress people they don't know. I remember when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. The only people on vacation cruises were on TV. If you went on "vacation," it was typically to visit relatives (i.e. free and low-cost).

Yep 👍🏽. I use CC for everything and pay the balance. I traveled for work and accumulated miles so get a discount on vacation travel. Now I use the 3% for our dinners etc. my only debt is my home and car payment both 3% interest $270 car note. I pay my daughter’s tuition rather than pay off the car. I’m maxing out my retirement accounts and looking for RE investments. I also get the 0% if I plan a large purchase. CC can give you leverage if you manage them and don’t use them as income.

I have a sister-in-law who is a Disney stan. She finances every vacation through Disney Vacations. She has a trip coming up in the fall on the Disney cruise line but is still paying off her her last Disney vacation as well. This is a woman who doesn't have two nickels to rub together but she still takes a vacation every year .

Living in a home is more than just mortgage, insurance, and taxes. There is a constant upkeep from the applinaces to the roof and all points in between. Something breaks and it's like a big shock.

I work in HVAC and we see homes with 3-4 brand new cars in their driveway but when it's time to replace/repair they complain about the price, they usually do the cheapest repair. A tech told me it's because the AC is hidden and can't be shown off.

I’m currently on a 3 week paid vacation from my job and when I get back ppl are gonna be asking me “where’d you go?” And when I tell them I took a staycation they’re all gonna be shocked and it’s just crazy lol before I left they told me “enjoy your money now” etc etc. bro I live on my own and I’m currently getting rid of debt and trying pay off my car. In about two years is when I can finally take a real vacation somewhere.
I have a sinking fund for vacations. I put the cost on my credit card, then once it posts I pay it off using the money in my travel sinking fund.

One of the major downsides of social media is that it has allowed people to see how other people above their tax bracket live and this hasn’t necessarily been a good thing because now these folks think that they too should be able to have that vacation, car, house, etc. just because they want it.

The biggest issue regarding this is too much VISIBILITY. People envy people on social media going on trips that they wish they could afford. Paying extra to the principal, every month to take 14 payments off at the end. No loans, no car payments , preparing for a very comfortable retirement. We are in our early 50s. I know personally a girl that went to Hawaii for ten days and when she came back she had to get another full time job just to keep from getting evicted all because she wanted to go to Hawaii.

Spent time in 65 countries (including Dubai,Iran,and Cuba), 4 RTWs,well over two million miles taking off 2-4 months a year without pay on top of five weeks paid vacation.
So far this year Nov-Jan on Kauai, three weeks for Rio Carnival, April/May/June in Spain,Germany,Austria,and Italy.
Currently in Lugano Switzerland for Lugano Estival Jazz. Girlfriend and I are staying all summer for some exploring ,hiking ,backpacking,etc..
One thing for sure is everyone isn’t struggling. I’m completely debt free with no financial issues and my girlfriend is from Italy with her own wealth,zero issues,and early retired herself.
I have seen and met many Americans and Canadians while traveling. Apparently I’m not the only heavy saver/investor nerd that rode the real estate and bull run from 2009.

I take about 4 vacations a year. However I am a travel agent and use the money I make booking travel to fund my own vacations. Also, I never finance trips. On occasion. i may use Uplift at 0% interest. I think there is a way to travel and maintain your finances.

Lol, I hate to keep saying it, but back in the day, the Freaknik, Essence Fest or Myrtle Beach bike week was the vacation. We road tripped and had one or two hotel rooms. So we each spent only a few dollars. Otherwise, it was the local Budweiser fest or HBCU classic football games. Rarely a need to use credit cards.
Fo' Real! I have family everywhere, so I never paid for or stayed in a hotel. I partied in the hotel functions and most of getting my groove on was with the Bunnies in the back seat of my ride or theirs. LOL. Then we back it up at the party house and it is what it was. I never spent more than $250-$300 on a Bike Week, Freaky Deek-Nik, or Myrtle Beach Buss-Down event. LMAO!

I’ve done a payment plan vacation before, but that’s only because my side job is delayed pay so I get the money about a month or later after I work, then I can pay it off when it comes. However, I see how it can produce negative spending habits even tho there is no interest.

I lived in NYC for many years, and there was all kinds of free entertainment, concerts in the park, biking in the park, art festivals, take the train to the beaches. A treat, back in the day was buying a Sabrett Hot Dog from the street vendors, and you were happy with it, or buying a small bag of roasted chestnuts from the street vendor and sitting on a park bench, people watching. It was more important to be with good friends than to go into debt impressing people that could care less about you or your $1500.00 designer handbag or $500 sneakers.

You have to use a credit card to book plane tickets, Airbnb, a cruise, etc. If you booked it with physical cash then let me know how you did it... (I am not driving to the airport to purchase plane tickets there with cash and I am not driving to the cruise line's headquarters to pay for my cruise with cash). The difference is that you use the money that is in your account vs. someone that doesn't have it so you just pay it off without getting into debt...

If you are smart, invest in Visa and Mastercard stock. People will continue to put themselves in credit card debt. This will never go away. It's like being an OBGYN Dr. and a mortician, good job security!
I actually only use credit cards for cash back. I haven’t used them on vacations though. I use them to on items that I already have cash for and know I am going to buy. So the money for the item is in my account. I swipe the card, get the cash back for it and then make the payment before the statement drops (never even hits my credit report). But that takes discipline to do along with the desire to be debt free.
Priorities over parties people! Most dont have a budget that they hold too.
