I made a probe a couple of weeks ago. 1" tube steel for the handle and 3/8 round rod about 30" long. Didn't know about putting a ball or otherwise making the point bigger than the shank. It worked well for what we needed--also looking for septic system components as part of the shop build. Adding a bathroom to the new shop cascaded into a second septic tank, dosing tank and 220' of draiin field. Nearly an entire new system.
Pilings support their load due to the friction of their sides against the soil, not from "sitting on" soil at the bottom. Made sense to me when a foundation contractor explained the physics to me.
@@EngineersWorkshop When you said how long you were going to cut it I immediately said no it should be like 3ft. Not because you need to jam it in the ground that far but because it saves having to bend over so far.

Guess it's just like relief on cutters, or hollow grind knives. In hindsight I should have made mine 12" longer, but I was concerned about buckling.
@@EngineersWorkshop When you described it in the video it really made sense. I will add something at the end of mine before I need to use it again.
