Using an ax to split wood will work when the wood is cut short and is straight grain but cutting 20 in. oak or cheery is tough to split. A splitting maul works better.

Hi Jim! Buckin, so did you ever use steel wedges and 8lb sledge hammer in the old days? I have 3 steel wedges I kept from my dad's stuff. I use 'em sometimes on really knotty small(er) wood at a fork or burl. Any species I can find, I burn---liquidambar (sweetgum), Chinese elm, pine, or any other ornamental stuff I can find here in the city. Haha, good stories. Love it, Brother.

Hey Buckin' great video! After digging around my garage I pulled out an old 6lb maul and feel inspired to fix it up and get it in service. The thing came back to me years ago with a busted handle and got put in a box. My opinion is similar that I'd grab a 5lb axe over a 6lb maul as my splitter. Enjoyed the vid. Buckin' you seem to always bring back tons of memories. I got my sister in the shins one day using the flick with my maul. She came in from behind/side of me to tell me that I had a phone call. She was still about 10 feet away just as I swung and I used the flick and that chunk went end over end over end. Looked like a rock skipping on water, I yelled look out, but she didn't see it or something and bang. She's on the ground crying, my dad is yelling at me and my friend that was calling hung up before I could inside. That was way before cell phones, I'd say early 80's. Stay safe friends!

Billy, I don't know if you saw my comment a couple weeks aga, but I suggested you get some kind of a luggage cart that has a smaller width (and looks nicer) then your wheelbarrow, and that fits thru the doors of the house. That way your wife and yourself can take a good load of firewood inside all the way to the stove (and maybe even leave it on it) I think it would be an easier way to do that task, less lifting...and about big maules, I bought a really nice one for my dad, but it's to heavy and he uses his old axe instead...
By the way Billy, you should get a Japanese carpenter saw to do your axes. They are really good, there's even a combined rip/crosscut saw perfect for handle making, it's called GYOKUCHO razorsaw Ryoba Noko giri and you'll find it on Ebay.

Hey Buckin', don't know if you've tried this, you probably have, but I drill a hole in a golfball and stick the tang of the file in it. By moving the ball from the cheeks to the poll and back you adjust the angle of the bit and with the file pivoting on the ball and sweeping along the edge, you can draw file the edge. The angle gets scary exact and you save your fingers.

Mr. Ray, it was nice to see what you can do with a maul head.. she sure looks nice. I'm wondering what another 8 inches of wood "24 inch" fire wood, splits like/ My stove takes 24 inch logs. I use a hydro spitter, but am curious what your axes/mauls would do too longer logs. not to mention different varieties of wood.. The army"s input is more than welcome. thanks.

Just hung a new handle on a old maul I got from a estate sale. I flap disk on a angle grinder removes material very easily!
