  • More than half of college students experience blackouts, according to studies. Alcohol, it turns out, interferes with the brain's ability to convert short term memories into long term ones. Since those memories don't get stored, you won't be able to recall them later.
Following is a transcript of the video:
Saturday, 12 PM. The light burns. Your head throbs. And you have no recollection of how you got back home. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. More than half of college students experience blackouts, according to several studies. And let’s be clear. Blacking out doesn’t mean passing out. You were probably awake and aware the entire night. So then, where did all those memories go?
Let’s rewind to Friday night. Normally, whenever you have an experience - like a conversation - a part of your brain called the prefrontal lobe stores that information in short-term memory. Then, another part of your brain called the hippocampus weaves those experiences together so they can be stored away as long-term memories. So the next day you remember “the party” as a whole instead of “smell of sweat,” “house music,” “Jen was there.”
But here’s the key part: storing these episodes in long-term memory requires special neurotransmitters. But your liquor shots prevent the neurotransmitters from working properly. So, instead of remembering the party, all you have is an incomplete or even empty file.
And the amount of alcohol in your system at the time influences how much you remember. Let’s say you’re a 73 kg adult man. And you’ve done 8 shots in 1 hour. Your blood alcohol content is probably around 0.2% by this point- more than twice the legal limit for driving a car. And your brain may still be able to store some memories. So you end up with “islands” of memories separated by missing sections. That’s called a fragmentary blackout, aka a “greyout” or “brownout”. But if you keep pounding those shots, it gets worse. Within the next half hour, you pound back another 4 shots. Now your blood alcohol content hits around 0.3%, and your hippocampus goes dark. And full amnesia sets in. This is called an en bloc blackout. And once you wake up, that entire night could be blank. Push your BAC much higher than that and…you might die.
And yet...your friends might not even realize you’re in the middle of a blackout, since the alcohol didn’t “delete” your long-term memories already safe in storage before the night began. So you can still carry on conversations and behave more or less like a typical person. To an extent. Blackouts aside, alcohol can still interfere with other regions of your brain including those responsible for reasoning and decision-making.
So during blackouts, people have crashed cars gotten into fights and committed -or been the victims of - sexual assaults. They just might not remember it.
That being said, not everyone gets blackouts. Your sex, body weight, and family history all play a roll. So that could explain why your friends recall the entire night despite downing just as much tequila. But it won’t save them from a wicked hangover the next morning.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

@Billy McCatty Powell thats comparing apples to oranges. cyanide is obviously much stronger than alcohol. there is no safe amount of cyanide, but there is a safe amount of alcohol. your odds of dying from alcohol poisoning from a couple glasses of wine are next to none.

    • @smoothbrained4channer976
      @smoothbrained4channer976 2 роки тому

@Billy McCatty Powell bro again with the comparing apples to oranges thing, hardcore drugs like heroin and meth cant be compared to weed or alcohol, the addictiveness of alcohol is next to nothing. its not manufactured to manipulate dopamine cells and give you an unparalelled (in nature), artificial high. i mean sure it can make you feel kinda funny and more confident but its not something that will get you hooked unless you have some addictive personality disorder; those are the only people who really get hooked on it, but they make up like 1% of the population. i tried alcohol a few times and not once did i have an unstoppable craving for it immediately after being drunk, like most people. heroin on the other hand is produced such that it makes you feel completely euphoric and gets you instantly hooked. Alcohol is completely safe to consume in moderation if you do not have a predisposition to addiction, no doubt.

Bro I can relate to you. Although my story is a little different. I got mugged leaving a club and ended up concussed. They got my phone and wallet, so I had no way to call for a ride or anything. Walked around for 2 hours or so until I found a police station. And I didn’t even “come to” until about an hour into that time. I felt so violated and scared thinking about what must’ve happened. And I couldn’t recall anything. And I’m no small guy, I’m 6’3” and 215 lbs AND I train boxing. But none of that matters when you’re in a blacked-out stupor.
I also struggle with alcohol. This happened last year, but I continued to drink. But I finally decided to kick it. As of today, I’m 2 weeks and 2 days sober.

This happened to me last night and it honestly scares me.
I left the pub at around 2 am and just had to catch a bus about 200m away and I'd be home in about 15 minutes. But I can see through messages that I send when I got home that I spend 2 hours getting home. I originally thought that I had just walked all the way home and not gotten on the bus for whatever reason but then I checked my google maps timeline of where I had been the night before and nearly shat myself.
I had taken 2 different buses which I definitely weren't supposed to get on and gotten off at random spots and just wandared around. And I have absolutely ZERO memory of this. It's so messed up to think about what the hell I was thinking in the moment. Also, at no point did I listen to music (I had headphones in my pocket) or check google maps or any other navigation app for direction. So I presumably just "traveled" for 2 hours without using my phone at any point. I've just gotten on these random buses, gone off at random points, walked around in places that I don't know of and then somehow made my way home with zero memory of how or why I did what I did. But I also have all my stuff with me, haven't fallen or anything and didn't throw up or feel sick so I presume I probably looked to be okay from an outsiders perspective.

I once thought it was 5a.m. one night and had to walk a mile to catch a bus to school but since I was blacked out it was really like 11:30 at night and went walking to the bus like it was morning and I was running late for school. Feel lucky I was okay and didn't get mugged or anything, my mom just so happened to be on her way to me to drop off some food she made and saw me wandering. When I got in the car I was all toxic and freaking out saying like where are you taking me I'm gona miss the bus. Guess when I entered back in my apartment I just checked the time and felt dumb but I was so blacked out I still had to wake up hungover to walk a mile to catch the bus to school in just afew hours smh.

The exact same thing happened to me last week.
I apparently left a party at around 00.30 am and got home at 02.30. I don't remember anything before 02.15. It felt like I had woken up from a dream. I found myself wondering around my neighbourhood without using Google maps or anything. The strange part is, that the party I was at, took place, 6km away from my home. Therefore I had been walking over 6 km without using my phone for directions. It is so awful and I feel terrible about my decision. Thos is the 3rd time in 1 and a half months that I have experienced memory loss after a night of drinking. 1 month ago I even got into an accident during a blackout.
I don't want to drink so much alcohol again, because I am scared of having another blackout experience.

I later found my hat in the street I don't remember where or how many time I fell.

The first time I got blackout drunk was at 16. It became a regular occurrence in my 20s. Finally, at 25, I started going to therapy. Something my therapist said to me still runs through my head regularly at 28, "People who get drunk are trying to escape their reality. So the question to ask yourself is: What part of your reality are you running away from?"
Moral of the story is: Binge drinking is NOT normal, even though our society makes it seem like it is. Blackout drinking is DEFINITELY NOT normal, and it can/will ruin your relationships.

I'm a 27 year old who's never blacked out. I drank to the point of throwing up several times and I really don't see the point of continuing after that. It would only happen after the night is over and I'm in bed trying to get some sleep. My head would start spinning and I get a strong urge to puke. So I get up throughout the night to do that. I hardly ever drink since I don't get a buzz from it. If I drink too much, I throw up, not enough and I don't feel anything. Honestly, the only thing I like about alcohol is the flavor of certain drinks. Overall, the substance is completely boring to me. Also, alcohol is the only substance I've injured myself on. You lose your motor skills and coordination without realizing it. I've tripped while walking, missed steps coming down the stairs, landed on my back/face, and slammed my hand in doors. It's not a fun substance. I actually think it's quite dangerous. Especially how it wrecks a lot of lives and families.

Alcohol affects people in varying ways and to various degrees. For example, I have never been able to throw up on a night out, only on the day after, pretty much no matter how much I drink. I have only been blackout drunk once in my life, although I know a lot of people that can drink way less than me and not remember much the following day. I also know people that can drink way more than me and wake up fine the next day while I have a massive hangover. Also, I don't have an issue with tripping/injuring myself when I'm drunk either. I'm certainly less coordinated, but not that bad.

So basically after a hard night of partying, you go into a blackout. However this experience isn’t known until you wake up and don’t remember what happened, one moment your with friends taking shots, the next in bed. Just like you time traveled in the blink of a eye. My question is, if your brain were to fail or something along those lines where you stayed in a blacked out state of memory storage. Would you know? Would you have self awareness that your not remembering? Or what?

Ive had many blackouts. Borderline alkie. Woke up in mental hospital. Heard I stood on a table and peed on people at a party. Got arrrested numerous times. I still drink but just at home now. Be safe and drinking until you blackout is the worse thing to do. Speaking from experience😁

I have been this drunk once. Super hard to walk, I was leaning on walls and holding onto them as I walked to the bathroom.
I remember most of the night until I took a triple shot of vodka and inhaled a huge puff off a marajuana pen. I was so happy and chill. But I forget everything afterwards except when I finally laid down to watch a show on the tv. (At friends house party) Then I just woke up.
And man, the next day sucked hard. Since I was drunk and high, I didn’t think to drink water. I had to worst migraine of my life and felt sick and super sore all day.
The one thing I learned is, drink water, a lot of it before passing out. XD
