Loot is a slang term used to describe effects that cause you to draw and then discard. In the lore the ancient Femori were playing a game of Commander and one of the players was digging for an answer to a board wipe. That player discarded this weird beast infant thing that was in his deck for some reason as part of the resolution for the loot effect. Since the weird infant beast thing was looted away for a better card his name became Loot.

Something not mentioned here about Howler. You arent restricted to only buffing your own creatures. So if you've got instant speed discard, you can discard before combat damage is assigned to buff enemy creatures, both making them hit harder and still getting you cards!
Came down here to say the same thing; it's a really fun interaction that makes your howler triggers less vulnerable to disruption (if only because it's not your creatures that would die to deny you the card draw).
I love the irony with Ketramose being indestructable - exile is the best way to remove it...

The "first on universes within" to have robot type re-enforces my theory that this was originally supposed to be another un set but because unfinity didnt do too well they changed it to a legal set.
If we want to be technical and nitpicky, there are Unfinity cards without the acorn symbol that are robots thus making Unfinity the first Universes Within set with robots.
The theme to me is not too outlandish but the fact that we just keep jumping from one story element to another is what makes everything feel so jarring. Two-set blocks I think would really go a long way in their modern storytelling
Medicant Core is only the first because Lita got robbed of a secondary type. She's a Robot in everything but name.
Frankly, I'm just glad there are new dinosaurs! I do wish the new Dracosaur was better, but now that we've seen more of Muraganda, I'd love an entire set based on the Saurid Autocracy. We need more Dino commanders in Naya colors.
You do realize that out of all the 3 color combinations that Naya has the most commander yeah? And the difference between the highest and lowest (Naya and Abzan) is 31. Naya having 50 and abzan having 19 legal commanders

I don't think Rest in Peace or Dauthi Voidwalker can draw off of Ketramose (outside of RiP etb) since the ongoing exile doesn't ever let cards go to the GY first. Just something to be careful about.
Ketramose also Cares about exiling from the Battlefield , though

@@SaysDom But the cards are still a trap include in the deck. Ketramose only triggers on YOUR turn and if multiple things get exiled at the same time it triggers only once. So you goozle yourself on a lot of value. It's way better to let stuff hit the grave for you to pick it out one at a time when you can get value out of it.

Correct. If I kill a creature on the battlefield, it's still leaves the battlefield as a "kill," not an exile. And it never makes it to the graveyard to be exiled, it effectively gets "rerouted."

It being a Duskmourne Demon is interesting because it looks like the Ghosts from that set who were all static-y because they were "trapped between worlds". I wonder what The Speed Demon was like back in its home. Either laughable from the tight spaces or a life ender because you're trapped in a long hallway with the malicious embodiment of speed.
@ I’m curious about that too. I don’t really enjoy the Speed Demond’s aesthetics, I feel like it clashes in a muddying way but considering that Duskmourn’s demons tend to help the survivors of the plane, perhaps the Speed Demon grants survivors super speed to literally outrun death.
The regular version has great flavor text. The special art version’s flavor text reads as if the person writing it had a stroke towards the end. “Nightmare mach-ightmare?” What the heck? Not only does it not make sense, but it would be pronounced “ma-SH!TE-mare.”

The new Gonti is super exciting, and I already have a list ready for them. I can't wait to have a proper thief deck, and I'm also including plenty of politics effects in the 99 for added decisionmaking

I got into MTG around 2000 because I was getting older and felt like I was out growing Pokémon. The art and themes felt more adult and interesting to me. If magic had been what it is now back then I don't think I would have ever given it a chance.

'Loot' looks like one of those untested custom cards random people create for giggles instead of something you put into the actual game.

Say what you will but the Guidelight Voyagers are probably the best part of Aetherdrift in terms of aesthetic design and flavor. I'm sure we'll see more of them come the space set and I'm honestly looking forward to it.

No love for the return of Mimeoplasm? I think its such a fun and funky card, you can use its ability to give itself different abilities at instant speed, like double strike in response to being unblocked, hexproof in response to a removal spell, indestructible in response to a boardwipe, plus any other kind of wacky shenanigans you can dream up with it. I love those kinds of commanders that have tons of plasticity and Mimeoplasm has so many avenues to explore
That gonti card feels like a great way to have fun games.
I have no issues with this set being race themed. It looks like a lot of fun. I also don't mind Robots showing up either. Magic takes place in a multiverse, which means you have hard sci-fi and your medieval fantasy, and they can even interact. I, for one, love urban fantasy, and would love to see us go to a more modern world. Imagine if Murders at Karlov Manor was based on an urban setting like the Dresden Files? I would buy the heck out of that. If you desperately need magic in your world building, Spelljammer elements would make for a great expansion and continue doing the sci-fi. Also, imperialistic hippos. Do I need to say more?

I know people give Loot alot of guff, but I like the little guy. I built up the first one as an cast from exile matters deck and it's really fun. I don't see him as an MTG pikachu though.

Honestly amazed Hashaton didn't make this list
Having experimented with building Captain Howler there's one card I've removed from the list after much consideration. That card is the Ur Dragon. Yes, it makes all your dragons cost less and lets you cheat all your big spells in play but I find the mana cost quite prohibitive (as izzet is not great at ramping). I know it's tempting to run it in the deck but please reconsider!
Add impact tremors to the Loot combo shown in the video and you won't even need to use his "lightning bolt" ability at all

Ketramose is also great if you're in a flicker/blink shell. Orzhov isn't quite as good as Azorius for this shell, but most of your best flicker effects are white and most of your best graveyard hate is black. If you have a creature that exiles from GY or play on ETB, you can even get two triggers from flickering it.
That blue legendary 0/8 octopus is going to be an allstar in Arcades the Strategist decks

I'm not a fan of Loot either Professor. Loot definitely has that corporate manufactured aura that is kind of grimy. Also not a fan of using "Robots" instead of good old Construct or even Thopter.
Surprised you didn't put Sab-Sunen on the list other than that silly Kefnet callback. I'm guessing the various "Start Your Engines!" Legendaries are way too silly to include on the list, but with that awful mechanic name aside, I think there is potential. Aatchik also joins the slowly growing Insect kindred Golgari deck build that is slowly getting more and more pieces every year.
I think Hashaton has captured a ton of people's hearts this set. Maybe because it's an awesome design. Maybe because it's from the commander decks that have nothing to do with the wacky mario kart race.

I think this might honestly be the first set that I DO think the Prof is being overly negative about the theme. You can say "Its Wacky Racers" or "Hot Wheels" or whatever, but it's really just vehicles as we have always had them, themed around 3 planes and a race. If we can accept that some planes have future tech, which includes vehicles, is it really breaking immersion of any kind to imagine some people racing with those vehicles? This is not to say that you must like it, it's completely fair to say it's not for you, but is it really that big of a departure from MtG lore? We already have cards like "Inventor's Fair", from Kaladesh, which suggests people showing off their inventions and some spirit of competition.
In the context of the last year and the future of UB being included to standard (bad decision imo), Aetherdrift is being brushed off as "yet another silly set", but I think some people are taking out their compounding frustration, for other sets and decisions, out on this set. I just can't imagine acknowledging that Kaladesh, Kamigawa, New Capenna, Dominaria and others can have advanced tech that we accept as part of the core fantasy, but using that technology in an unserious way, breaks immersion or represents Universes Beyond or an Un-set. It is a lighthearted set, but in isolation, that is not a bad thing. Maybe there are too many silly sets recently and especially going forward, and that is a fair criticism.
Either way, love ya Prof, keep doing what you are doing, but I wanted to share my opinion.

Honestly, I got no problems with Robots as a creature type. It is construct adjacent and not that far off from fantastical anyway.

Idk if you'll end up reading this, but I think it needs to be said.
Surely a character that was just introduced last year can grow on you if you give the story and character a chance to breathe. I don't really see how this much destructive criticism about the game's characters, new or otherwise, is good at all for helping to get more people to engage with and support the Magic story. Are we all so far gone that buzz words have become the height of comedy now? I struggle to see how a creature such as Loot is any worse a design than Beebles. Oh I bet it's been in a minute since anyone's thought about Beebles.
I honestly can't fathom how anyone in the community thinks Loot's character design has any real serious marketing impact good or bad for Magic when this game is so heavily built, and rests squarely, upon simply getting people to jump from gambling on one pack to the next as its primary profit margin. Is Loot truly the big marketing scheme that Wizards of the Coast needed to pull off to beat Pokémon much less compete with them? And even if it was, so what? Would you honestly rather the company stuck with Hurloon Minotaur as its mascot? If we want more people to try out Magic would you rather the game bring in new players by reaching out with its own characters or would you prefer they leaned even heavier into Universes Beyond?
It's fine if you don't like[Insert character here] but can we please as a community move past making how much we hate a character being the only real thing we have to say about it. It's exhausting to be a fan of a character that wants to engage with the community when big members of that community are walking around with megaphones saying over and over again just how much they don't like that character. I know it makes *ME* not want to engage with what someone else enjoys in a positive manner if that person isn't going to do the same for others. I for example, don't particularly care much about Lorwyn as a plane but I still want to see how excited the plane's fans are when we return to it. If, per your previous videos, you want people to see you less as a negative Nancy, then might I suggest taking a look at how you present and engage with the things in this game that you dislike. Multiple times in Shuffle Up and Play you are given cards and decks to play with that you would have written off on any other circumstance on the channel if not for the fact your friends want you to try to see the joys that they themselves feel after all. This endless dogpiling on Loot(when you could have ignored putting him on the list altogether) just makes it hard for someone like me to want to share this video with friends that like the character as much as, or more than, me. It made me want to write this all out after all, as it hurts to see this much negativity being pushed onto this silly little guy that has done nothing to deserve this much heat all over the internet.
With that all being said, I still greatly appreciate what you and your team do on the channel and for the community and wish you all the best in these difficult times.

Be nice about Loot. It's not his fault that the first person he saw is the poster boy for basement dwelling incels. Unlike Jace, Loot actually has a good personality and interesting character traits.

I would exclude Loot for the sheer fact that he is a ham fisted mascot but jokes aside, I feel like Loot fits better in the 99 at times because of the fact that you can pitch him into the Trash and then Agatha Soul Cauldron him into the depths of exile where he will never grace the board again but his effects lingers to anything with a +1/+1 counter so then you can reap the benefits without having to have that furball on the field! It's genius I tell you!
