  • Today I am exploring the market town of Shrewsbury from a newcomer's perspective and imagining that I have travelled in by rail. What might I find.
Shrewsbury is a market town whose centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. Horticulture remains popular, and the Shrewsbury Flower Show is one of the largest horticultural events in England.

About an hour from where I live here in Oregon, is the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire. We go every year in September and enjoy the plays, singing/dancing, jousting and food. So many people attend the faire in costume and have a grand time. The historical reenactments by the various guilds are educational and entertaining. My imagination is combining my Shrewsbury and yours in a delightful daydream. Thanks 🙂

Shrewsbury is a pretty wee town, some lovely architecture there and some lovely scenery down by the river too. Whilst you're in this neck of the woods I'd recommend Bridgenorth, Much Wenlock, Iron Bridge and Ludlow a visit. I'm luck enough to live in Shropshire and I think it's a very underrated county.

Darwin was born in Shrewsbury. His foundation years spent playing along the River bank. Educated in both the Unitarian School and Shrewsbury School but most importantly the glorious rural surroundings. Shrewsbury was his Home until age 27. He always returned home from his adventures until he married his cousin.

Shrewsbury looks like a very nice place to visit if you ask me. Especially the many old buildings and churches there!! (Except there are horrific buildings like Lloyds Bank and Crown House, which I call it the "Crown of Boringness") But also... there is this one confusing and weird thing about the place is that everyone pronounces it "SHREEWS-buree" instead of pronouncing it "SHROZ-bree", well actually I did used to pronounce it like that, but I now use the actual pronunciation. It's kind-off unknown why, but I'm probably guessing that it's the dialect there changed over time. But overall... It's quite a nice place to visit there!! (Along with Ludlow, Clun, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge, etc.) :)

We dont like it when people pronounce the O vowel not the E vowel. You'll get yourself in a spot of bother - It's only the posh lot on the other side of the river that pronounce it "shrowsbury"
      It's spelled with an E not an O - So it's SHREWSBURY

Richard, my old mate, try to do your videos on a dry sunny day as opposed to a wet day which presents the place in a rather drab scene. I’ve said this before as it rings true in nearly every town centre, that although the history is higher up as you say, it is spoilt by the ‘Superdrug's and Argos’s’ etc of this world, located beneath, as opposed to the small individual shops and tea rooms of yesteryear. Good video though 👍.

Like the video for the most part, the only problem being the way you say shrewsbury. Split the word: Shrews-bury not Shrows-bury

@@RichardVobes I left from the University of Wolverhampton to visit this beautiful city. it was June of 2014. I was attending a six week seminar in the UK on Improving Forest Governance Course.

getzenman It is not huge, but the county town of Shropshire so a reasonable size.

compared with other videos of this market town you show it to good effect but it has sufferred from much hideous post war redevelopment and seems to me to have a rather dreary quality.

I know that what I'm about to tell you is profound, but... The word Shrewsbury is pronounced the same way that it's spelt. Mind blown?

Funnily enough - while some do pronounce that the name is not derived from the mammal, but old English words, hence different interpretations.

You can tell it is a very divided town hit hard by austerity and job losses. The architecture speaks of its affluent history which is now pretty much non existent. The people seem very nosy and invasive.

Judith Wright That is an interest observation. Shropshire is littered with evidence of old money.
