No idea he was the first to star in the Comic book character Marvel The Punisher Danggggg I will be watching it later iam a big Fan of Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Vam Dam. I have a watched a few movies with them in it❤❤
This is a great movie. My first time watching it that Dolph Lundgren is a punisher. He did a great job as an actor. Thank you for sharing this video. Love the oldies movie. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@NobleRaider2747 He's right though , most comic adaptations suck. Only good ones were Blade 1 , Blade 2 , The Punisher (1989) , Dredd , Batman , Batman Returns , Batman Begins , The Batman , TMNT (1990) , Superman 2 , The Crow , The Shadow... and one or two of the X-Men films.
When I first saw it in the late 80s I was disappointed with the fact he didn't have his skull symbol and the little things that made this film not a comic book film but as I watch it now I realize how great the realistic dark grittiness made Lundgrens Punisher like a Charles Bronson character which is a plus in my book
I enjoyed this dark and tragic Punisher movie. The last scene where former allies realistically fight to death like two enraged dogs in front of the boy, you feel their rage and frenzy. Franco who is a ruthless mobster but who can give his life for his son is a true beast. The whole no joy ending. I enjoyed the film.
@user-jq5ut9oy3x Wait, what? Chris Pine got cast as punisher?!?! Interesting. But yeah, I get it. I understand your pov totally. The later punisher varients do have a much more focused attention to detail. With regards to the action, physics, and how practical effects drive the narrative development. Whereas the Dolph Lundgren punisher has stuff in it that absolutely kill your suspension of disbelief. Such as the bad guys getting insta killed by knives, one shotted by shotguns at 20 yards, and too numerous to mention other ridiculous examples of wasted production value. Instead, focus on character development. BUT, that is how 1980s action films go with regards to physical realism. They either way overdo it. Using physical realism to develop the narrative (Predator, Aliens, Robocop, Dune, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator, Top Gun), or they almost on purpose intentionally fail and make baffling shit up with regards to realism. Choosing instead almost l as an unspoken rule to laser focus in on the character development of the protagonist,s Hero's Journey. Which is almost always of a gritty, hyper masculine, independent lone wolf, male archetype. (Rocky, Cobra, Blood Sport, Road House, He-Man, Flash Gordon, Steel Dawn, Rambo First Blood) Rambo and its sequel Rambo First Blood illustrates EXACTLY the dichotomy of what I am talking about. The two movies are literally have absolutely nothing in common. Other than an actor by tye name of Slyvester Stallone playing a guy named Rambo. That is it. It's either all tgw one way or all the other with 80s films. There's really no example of a middle ground. With the exceptions of maybe Robocop and Aliens.. But, sort of. Sigourney Weaver absolutely killed it as probably the only living example of a female actor convincingly pulling off the Hero's Journey archetype. And Peter Weller pragmatically coming to terms with body horror. Upon realizing in Robocop that he is 99% a metal cyborg implanted with little more than a brain, stomach, and dead facial tissue turned into leather and stretched across his now completely robotic skull. To make him look more "human." Such is the case with the Lundgren Punisher. It's all character development driven by the staring actor. And no narrative development driven by props, cinematography, or environment. But what makes the Lundgren Punisher so great. Is it's take on the almost cliche Hero's Journey at this point in 1989. And fueling it with the perspective of the anti hero. Which really had not nor has been portrayed in a great way. Sense Clint Eastwood first pulled it off first as an actor. In his spaghetti westerns. Such as the 60s, Good Bad and the Ugly, Fistfull of Dollars, 80s Pale Rider and 90s Unforgiven. Those are 3 films that are going to be absolutely fucking impossible to remake. Seeing as there's no way to clone Clint Eastwood. And the new woke environment of this society. Couldn't even begin to have a clue in how to even effectively protray an antihero let alone think about how an antihero even works. The closest thing we've had to an antihero as of late. Is basically Walter White in Breaking Bad and Karl Urban's portrayal of Judge Dredd in 2012.
Dolph Lundgren actually looks like a monster in this movie, especially him hiding in the sewers is scary as hell, which I think makes this movie distinct from the rest. It almost feels like a horror movie in some parts. People say he can't act, but I don't agree with that. He does a good job selling being a hollow shell who doesn't give a shit about anything anymore. The ending monologue he gives cements that. Also I fucking love Louis Gosset Jr. in this.
Can confirm this is the UNRATED version with a few snippets of added carnage...thank the Gods! The WORKPRINT can also be found, adding almost 15 minutes to the beginning of the film.

I never understood why people hated on this movie so much. Dolph Lundgren was great as The Punisher. he had excellent hand to hand skills and great shooting. sure, the script could've been a little better, he could've had the Punisher Skull on, but I liked he had them on his knives. overall, this was a great B movie. the action was constant. the one they made in 2004 with Thomas Jane would've been so much better if they hadn't spent a lot of the movie with him being mopey and just kicking ass. I'm a 90's kid and I grew up watching this. to me, this, and The Punisher War Zone are the best Punisher movies. this movie was awesome.
