  • I have an Ableton Push 2 and over the years, the rubber has started degrading. I've been looking for a solution and I think I've finally found it!
    Goo Gone seems to work wonders but I'm gonna let it sit for a few days and then do the rest. Hopefully this helps some of you out there who have a similar problem with your Push or other instruments.
    If you have other solutions to this sticky problem, let me know in the comments! have a great day!

    You are an absolute legend. Thanks for sharing. Trying this tomorrow. Can’t believe they’ve made such an expensive piece of gear with such cheap material.

      Haha! Yeah it's pretty ridiculous how quickly it degrades. I ended up using 70% alcohol to wipe the Push 2. That gets the majority of the gunk off. Then use Goo Gone to give it a final few wipes. Works like a charm!

    Ohhh myyy goodness. THANK YOU. My Push 2 is in absolutely perfect condition aside from that sticky rubberized coating, I've got a pair of DJ headphones that are the same way. Cheers dude, happy 2023!

    Wow thank you! This is highly validating. Just spent hours scrubbing the goo from the bottom and sides of my Push. I still have more to do. I have been using microfiber clothes because they give off less lint than the other towels I had laying around…however they still leave little bits of fabric almost worsening the situation. I’ve found that copious amounts of goo gone and scrubbing quickly in little sections, going bit by bit has worked best. It seems like the friction and heat are what are making the difference. Super frustrating issue, wow Ableton not cool.

      @TavishMusicOfficial  Місяць тому

      Yeah I tried a whole bunch of things. A cloth dipped in 70% alcohol also works wonders at getting the large chunks of gunk off. After that, a full wipe down with goo gone. Solved my problem and the goo hasn't returned!

    It took me an entire day to remove the sticky stuff from the backside.. It appears that Ableton has learned from their mistake as Push 3 does not have such a coating 🙂

      Glad it was of help! Try using 70% rubbing alcohol first. It'll get rid of most of the sticky stuff and then a final clean with goo gone. I used alcohol on the Ableton label as well and it didn't eat into it or anything. Stay away from the rubber pads though to be safe. Try the alcohol on a small patch at the back and if it works for ya then great! Having a clean Push makes a world of a difference especially if you're logging it around all the time. Cheers!

      Give the Push a once over with diluted alcohol first. Then the Goo Gone doesn't have to work as hard and it keeps the stickiness away. It worked for me but try at your own risk! Maybe try it on the back on a small patch first to make sure the alcohol isn't too strong.

    Same here. Fortunately, the rubberized surface is limited to the sides and rear of the Push 2. The push 1 is worst as that rubberized surface was also applied to the front. The other thing to try is the stuff you use to clean the glass surface on cookers. It really depends on how far gone the surface is.

    • @CrushTheWealthGap
      @CrushTheWealthGap 6 місяців тому

      ahh man, imagine if the rubberized surface was around the buttons too. That would have been a complete mess

  • @iameam

    For what it's worth. Goo Gone did not work for me. But I used rubbing alcohol which, after a ton of elbow grease, completely removes the rubberized coating all the way down to the plastic surface. What a pain in the A. Thanks Ableton!

    • @TavishMusicOfficial
      @TavishMusicOfficial  6 місяців тому

      Yeah I ended up using alcohol first and then a wipe down with goo gone. Thankfully the Push 3 seems to have solved that gooey issue but unfortunately I don't see myself upgrading to the 3 anytime soon

    On my Push 2, it's the ENTIRE BOTTOM of the unit except for the little feet-pads. Ugh, it's so gross, and my fingers got sticky just moving the Push 2 to a box so that I could have some electrical work done in that room. Edit: I've used Goo-Gone, Goof-Off, and even WD-40 to get this gooey stuff off of other equipment. But for the Push 2, I'm seriously considering just covering the bottom with Gorilla Tape. That's like duct-tape, only it is a glossy black color, and Gorilla Tape has micro-perforations for easy tearing. I've used Gorilla Tape to hold drain pipes together, and that stuff has actually lasted almost 10 years underground, lol! The Gorilla Tape will take me an hour to apply, as opposed to spending a whole day with one of those other options.
    Another possible option would be to remove the bottom plate from the unit, then soak some paper shop-towels in acetone (fingernail polish remover), and just lay the wetted shop-towels on top of the goo, then wrapping the whole thing in a plastic garbage bag to simmer and brew for a half hour. That might sufficiently loosen the goo. Man, I hate the wiping and wiping and endless wiping to get this nasty rubber off of something. Of course, it might be easier to just make a new bottom plate out of a 1/2-inch thick plank of wood, stain it, and then drill holes for the screws. If I had a 3D printer, that might be a good project too.
    Friends don't let friends design stuff with fake rubber that turns gooey after a few years!

      @TavishMusicOfficial  10 місяців тому +1

      Yup same here. It was so disgusting that I just didn't want to use it any more! But the cleaning trick works a charm. 70% alcohol wipe down followed by goo gone and you'll be back to music making in no time! 😀😀

    Dont use Goo Gone... use 90% isopropal alcohol, and just rub the rubber off and you will have plastic underneath... I thought I was the only one with a sticky push2!!! apparently, everyone has the issue... rub the rubber off with ISO 90% and it will be smooth underneath

    • @TavishMusicOfficial
      @TavishMusicOfficial  10 днів тому

      Yeah I finally ended up using 70% alcohol and finishing it off with a layer of goo gone. The alcohol takes off most of the sticky stuff and the goo gone creates an additional layer. Worked like a charm and the gunk hasn't returned since!

      Try 70% alcohol first before you put on the goo gone. It removes most of the gunk! Haven't tried it directly on the buttons so be careful if you're trying that. Alcohol might eat through the rubber buttons

      I know it’s been a while, so you probably have already done this. But just for anybody else who may be coming along, I would recommend removing the panel with the sticky stuff on it, and then cleaning the sticky off of it. I agree with Tavish that you don’t want to get any of the solvents on any of the buttons and pads. They may be silicone or they may be rubber. I wouldn’t want to see anybody burn a hole in any of their buttons!

    • @justaskin8523
      @justaskin8523 10 місяців тому

      It may be possible that they’re not doing the refurbishment anymore, because they’re just about due to release a new version of push (if indeed that’s what they’re going to do).
      At this rating, native instruments has already announced two new versions of devices, and I suspect other manufacturers will be doing the same now through October/November, just in time for the Christmas season!

      None at all. I used 70% alcohol first and then a wipe down with goo gone and the stickiness hasn't returned since! That's just my personal experience so I'd suggest trying it out on a little patch before doing the whole thing.

      I can also confirm that it doesn’t damage anything. I’ve used it on several pieces of equipment. For the push to, I think I will take it apart so that I can bear down on it and apply some real elbow grease, and also to avoid getting Any solvents inside of the electronics.

      Nope. It's still got the soft touch finish. It just removed all the stickiness. Try this on the back on a tiny patch first. I don't want anyone blaming me for a ruined push! 😀

    • @justaskin8523
      @justaskin8523 10 місяців тому

      Well, when I removed the sticky rubber from an old logitech throttle and joystick, all of the rubber had to come off. I worked on that for several hours and got it down to the bare plastic. So the entire “soft touch“ surface did end up getting wiped off. It ends up all over your paper towels or whatever you’re using. And then you just throw it away with the paper towels. Seriously, that joystick and throttle are a joy to use now even though it’s just bare plastic without any soft touch material. Anything is better than feeling like you stuck your hand into a sugary dessert and then let it congeal on your fingers!
