- Tag along to Montgomery, New York for a behind the scenes visit with designer John Lyle in his historic Hudson Valley home.
See how John transformed his circa 1790 house into a showplace of exuberant color, large scale artwork and a panoply of personality. Learn how John layered pieces from his eponymous collection of contemporary furniture and accessories with a high/low mix of collected antiques, flea market finds and talented friends’ work. For over thirty years John has created luxurious objects and furniture that reflect his love of materials - from bronze fireplace accoutrements to shagreen dressers to stainless consoles and tables. His sophisticated eye effortlessly combines classic with avant-garde, juxtaposing unexpected elements, colors and finishes. It is exactly this tension that John sought when designing his home, where whimsy and delight transport you from room to room, each with its own individual mood. Walk in the entry and you are instantly wowed by intense jewel tone colors and oversized art but then the living room is comparatively subdued, letting the artwork shine. From there the dining room is again an explosion of color, anchored by a Fromental wall covering with Farrow & Ball’s Pitch Blue trim and a roaring fire. In fact it was the plethora of fireplaces in the house that was a salient selling point. John is known for his distinctive fireplace accessories (andirons, screens and tools), raising the bar for anything hearth related. You’ll be inspired by John’s prolific talent and resourceful approach to reimagining his historic home!
This is how a home should look. It should be representative of who you are and not look like every influencer’s. Same house, different zip code. So glad to see this. It’s so refreshing and colorful, and that makes it even more appealing.
Couldn't agree more!
Absolutely!

“Nothing is precious here” love that statement! Shows that he lives to enjoy his home. Love it!!
I tell you what, you look at the outside of that house and think it's going to contain traditional furniture and decor. You then step inside and see a mix that is totally unexpected! What a beautiful and welcoming home!
Yes!! So creative! Glad you loved!

Absolutely gorgeous home. John Lyle's home is my favorite thus far. What a vibrant and tasteful design. Genius.
Yes! I’m a “Susie from across the river” bedazzling and customizing things is too much fun. What a lovely home❤️❤️❤️
The way Sussana can read the host's mind by seeing his/her home decor ideas and choices and the insigthful way she highlights these findings are the things make this show so unique from any other show
It is always a pleasure having her walking us and interpreting those decor choices to us
@@katiushkaflores thank you so much! Susanna is a great host - she has years of design background (she worked at both House & Garden and ELLE DECOR) and has written many design books that makes her an informed guide. We pride ourselves on providing what we hope is not only beautiful but discerning, intelligent content!
I just love people who have the ballsiness to follow their heart. My mother always told me to set fashion never follow it and Mr. Lyle has a style of his own and it chimes! Loving it and him!
What a beautiful and original home. The man himself seems a fascinating and remarkable creator. A favorite thing l love about Susanna is her guests almost always prepare a meal for her or stroll with her through their remarkable gardens. Being from the South, this is the epitome of hospitality and good will. Bravo to a beautiful hostess, remarkable guests, and transformative home decor experiences❤❤
Thanks very much! So glad you enjoyed!
So, so beautiful. A feast for the eyes!
The oversized art pieces in the entryway are to die for!!!! Love this home! ❤
So glad!
John’s not only a great designer but also a very interesting decorator. His home is lovely and alive with meaningful color and artistic curiosity. His sweet little dog, laying by the fireplace was so cute and cozy
Six fireplaces…I’m in love! He’s so charming…
If a home is indicative of the owner....all i can think of is ...WOW ! John Lyle is definitely in a wonder of a land all his own. The more i see of creative peoples homes the more i am sure that the more culture one educates oneself with, the more it will show in everything you do ❣
YES!!!
Deep appreciation for a moment of glamour and luxury…it takes courage to design a home like this…the blues are thrilling,…💙💙💙💙💙
Well said!!!
So fantastical! Love the owner. What a pleasure to “meet” and get to know this talented man.
John’s a delight!!
The way he mixes is just genius.. periwinkle floors, chinoiserie, Amazon LEDs, WOW!
Oh Quintessence, nobody does it better! Thank you for another fantastic experience. I've always called "while we're at it..." the 4 most dangerous words in the English language. SO glad John heard them. Be still my heart. It will take me 2 or 16 times through this to grok it all and to find how to translate some of his inspiration into my own world. What a treasure box you've brought us. If it's true that "home is heaven for beginners," I pray I end up in his bardo.
Thank you!! SO glad you enjoyed!!
Quintessence has really made me reconsider the way you can view design. You can judge a space by how it looks compositionally in a photo or by whether or not the taste matches yours, or you can see the life and beauty in a wonderful mix of choices and stories and collections that uproots anything that could ever be taught or standardized. This home has a beautiful spirit! Thank you Quintessence for providing such variety and narrative to the many places you share.
Thrilled you’re inspired!!
Fascinating and unexpected.
Omg this was so exquisite. The lights, the floors, mirrors. Lovely and interesting.
What an absolute treat for the eyes. Scrumptious, Glamorous, Joyful. I couldn’t take the smile off my face throughout the whole time watching this. Thank you both so much for sharing such loveliness.
How ingenious to do a color story on the floors throughout the house. It’s exciting but at the same time somehow not jarring. A lot to be learned here. Thank you for sharing this beautiful house.
Bonjour mes très chères
As always it is with pure pleasure that I find you here. What a lovely person you introduced to us. Talent at its finest for sure in so many ways. From the choice of bold colors to the very unique pieces of furniture and arts, the feeling it gives is warmth, cozy and magic. It is a feast for the eyes and a balm for the soul. Merci pour la très belle visite ❤❤
I love the vibrant colors in the entry and the periwinkle blue with the warmth of peach and tangerine. Artsy!

I love it! You show no fear- as it should be, when you are free.
The painted floors and bold wall colors are unexpected in a home of this age. Every room is a wonderful jewel box filled with treasures and unique furnishings. I have watched this episode repeatedly collecting idea's for future projects.
Delighted to hear it.
Absolutely loved this house
So glad!
That mother of pearl table is so pretty!❤
It is! John's collection is so creative.
Simply smashing. It takes someone super talented to mix together so many bold colours and periods of furniture. You always showcase the best spaces!
Agreed and THANK YOU!!
Color, color, color! Yes!
Literally GORGEOUS😍
COLOR. Beautiful.
Colour is everything!
Love! Colorful and artist! 🙌
In love with the four collages over the white fireplace in the first room.
Thank you . Those were done by my friend Vito Giallo. He was Andy Warhol's first assistant...ih the 1950's....he has a memoir book out now.
Fabulous is the word! ❤❤
You look so pretty in this video…your hair as gorgeous….his home is the BOMB….love all the color….Thankyou. Hugs carolyn
Thank you that is so incredibly of you … I’m not sure. I agre with you about my hair but definitely about his house lol!
Fancy dog bed by the fire! So much color, so many patterns and surprising combinations of art and objects. Another great home where you could wander for hours just looking at everything. The wallpaper in the dining room is fascinating; I've seen many Chinoiserie patterns, but that one is really different. The 'golden arrow' banister/railing on the front steps were a fantastic surprise before we got through the front door. And those polished steel mirrors are something else, especially where they are placed to reflect various objects in the same room. This was a nice treat for a steamy August Saturday. Cheers, gals!
Happy colorful home!!!!!
Sumptuous! Loving this house. Wonderful wallpaper! Thank you so much for another epic video!
Beyond fabulous!!!!!
Bold stands for Beautiful, ok? This is one of those no faux-pas home designer vids imo, great deal of appreciation on how he put his own touch everywhere and stick to his own stream of creativity, some of those bourgeois homes are quite the redundancy. John Lyle, another discovery to add in my book, thank you Quintessence !
At 4:15 in the video Susanna makes one of the most important design lessons: if you focus on the furniture floorplan first, and use classic arrangements such as a pair of consoles with a pair of mirrors flanking the fireplace, then you can go into any color and style direction, and it will all seem balanced and harmonious.
And Lyle's use of color is inspiring: while feeling modern and original, its not inconsistent with an 18th century house, where we have discovered through paint analysis that period paints had a lot of pigment. The arsenic green paired with blue floors is "the moment", and then the living room is balanced with quiet beige walls, where the art and accessories add the color.
So many good design tips.
I’m so glad we could be inspiring and helpful!
Listen, I love that he’s expressing himself, to staying in a box, and inspiring the rest of us. That said, if I let it rip, the outcome would be very different, as it should be.
This house is absolutely fabulous. Eclectic and interesting. I would’ve never thought of those colors love that kitchen red floor great idea thank you so much for sharing. And he is absolutely adorable.
So happy when you post a new video! Made my day
Thank you!! 🙏🏻
The fireplaces!!! 🔥
Fascinating. And that sweet little pup sitting by the fire! Love it.
She is THE BEST!!! So smart and loving.
Yay color!!! There are so many neutral colors in home decor today, which look great, but I need color saturation. I have the same kind of Victorian home from 1929 and was just about to paint the living room a light purple. I also love the idea of frames on mirrors and was thinking of designing one where one corner hangs over as a weeping cherry tree would, but with wisteria, a gentle purple flower hanging down from an upper corner so that when you look into the mirror you feel that you are part of that garden, part of nature.
I love the idea of the tea party with grandma too. I'm bringing my 87 year-old father over to have tea. People with dementia love shiny objects. He would love the mother of pearl table. It would light up his whole day! Get out the tea cups and saucers! :)
An amazing surprise to see what it actually looks like behind John' Lyle's traditional front door. I love the mix of color and art and handmade decorations. The little poodle knows the best place to be in the house. Susanna, I love your boots.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wonderful video! This looks to me like Garrison, New York.
I ' m Chilean, I'm live in California for 28 years, I love your video, and love every home you visit and share with us, thanks

The interior of this home was such a surprise from the classical exterior.
I would love to see Susanna's home!

Love that book!
What a fun house!
I love his stepmother’s response to the monkey painting he so kindly offered her … it didn’t suit her but she intuited it would be to his liking.
Could she talk over the homeowners any more? You’re doing a splendid job of consistently interrupting people. Bravo 🙌
A master of colour with style: Is there a book of this mans collective works? It inspires me to be more bold with colour in future: Such an enjoyable episode you have given us: Thank You!
Our pleasure and no book - yet!
Fabulous use of color!!

You are right. Whimsy. Thank you.
the painting of the monkeys ,and phallic sculptures @13:13 on the tables is - curious. i do love the home though. a colorful parade of extravagance, style and pomp!
Where’s he from his accent is wonderful and he is so delightful and talented. It is so great that you bring original people and their designs to us! Unlike any other magazine or podcast! Thank you for the nice morning surprise!
Thank YOU! So appreciate your viewership! John is originally from Mississippi!
@@quintessenceblg the soft accent of the south that is not a twang just makes you want to hug him.
@@quintessenceblg last design season there was a special de Gournay wallpaper just giving a nod to Texas and was put up in a rounded vault ceiling in Culp and I was lucky enough to be there when the young man from NYC was there for the installation. It was not obvious, so I started pointing out where the armadillo was etc. I am not a designer and don’t have fine things but it was a wonderful experience to tag along to see things with my sister that does. He should do something with them can you imagine what it would look like -we don’t know hes so original!
@@laurenglass4514 agreed!
@@laurenglass4514 He IS original indeed!
Burning fireplaces are terrible for environment. House is incredibly beautiful and the designer’s energy is amazing
Interesting house reflection of his style
Wonderful home.
I can't believe how much I lose the way he uses color, it i bold, but very comforting and it has a glow.
The kitchen and the dining room are my favorite!!!!
